I love it that you can be online during flights now... Or do I hate it?

On Grandstanding on BBS — [gemini link] Re: On Labels [gemini link] the discussion that caused all this Weighing in the risk of escalating the drama vs. having a safe, hate-free place for discussions, I cannot remain silent in light of recent abuse of BBS and myself. BBS is a place I've enjoyed since its birth, to exchange opinions with other Geminauts. It's value is very much in the ease of starting and continuing discussions with others. Sometimes we agree, other times we don't. Occasionally...

Decent affordable earbuds? — Do you have any suggestions from personal experience? I used to hate things stuck in my ear, but since the onset of COVID learned to appreciate them, and they no longer bother me. My first -- and best cheap earbuds were (2020 or so) CCZ Yinyoo Melody for $20, which were by far the best! I wish I understood that and was more careful, but at some point the cable broke and I thought they were disposable, and now can't find them... Since then, I tried to replace them...

My bully is back... — @skyjake, I hate to waste your time on this bull****, but clseibold is back and it did not take long before he attacked me. I am now being actively bullied in a recent discussion with bluesman, and just wanted to bring your attention to it early. Since obviously my messages are read only to find ways to attack me, I would appreciate if you find a way to de-escalate before it gets out of hand again. Thanks.

WTF happened to Firefox? — I've been using LibreWolf and Waterfox forks, having given up on Firefox many years ago. I fiddled with it so much trying to regain privacy -- first, add-ons, then searching for 'google' in about:config and trying to remove offending entries, but eventually gave up, and the privacy-oriented forks with telemetry removed were a breath of fresh air. Firefox proper has been sitting unused and quietly updating by the OS, without me ever touching it. However, today, I...

Bitching about File Managers — Color tagging the text So we are somewhat-closer to mid-21st-century. And I feel like we never left the stone age as far as even simple tools go. I will elaborate. Back in pre-OSX days I was used to the Mac file manager, which let me change the color of the filename in file list mode. I loved it and used it all the time. They removed that feature, and today, there is no operating system or application that supports it. Is it that much to ask for? It is...

D language... — After ranting about python like a jackass, I came across some Hacker News article that mentioned D and started down that rabbit hole... The thing about python that gets me is that it is just there and you can make a quick and dirty prototype. As distasteful as I find it, it does pack a wallop. And while Lisp is a light-year ahead, I rarely find myself cranking up emacs and getting a package up just to try something foolish. C of course has the universal appeal for speed and...

re: Stop pretending to be anti-violence — [gemini link] I agree with so many things, except one -- markets. Yes, government equals violence, in every 'solution' it offers. Yes, enforcement, especially selective enforcement of contracts is violence. And capitalism, especially in advances stages, is total violence -- like most --isms (government preferences) it is and -ism that gives preference to the rich. Free Market is not Capitalism It is the opposite of capitalism. Let me elaborate, because...

Netcup wanted my ID! — I tried to sign up for their cheapest VPS. They demanded that I provide them with a government-approved picture ID using a device with a camera via a link that mutt broke into 3 lines. Harumph. Naturally I ignored it, and two weeks later (today) they sent me an email that my order was canceled because I failed to provide a valid ID. I could not resist and wrote a scathing email in response. That will show them! Is it something about Germany specifically that makes people...

AWS Hosting — AWS hosting experience As some of you know I've struggled with tildes hosting my games, and finally gave up and signed up for AWS a week ago. Why AWS? I don't really know, but given their size and breadth (encompassing a good chunk of the Internet) I figured it is likely to at least be reliable. My attempts to get a cheap host at some barely-known place or one of the German facilities failed miserably. Also, unsurprisingly, trying to sign up for Oracle was a disaster with four $...

SpellBinding: New Server! — [gemini link] How many times can this happen? Hopefully this is the last time. DDNS address -- I can point it anywhere I want! My own AWS instance -- hopefully no downtime. I am grateful to tilde.team for hosting the game -- while it lasted. Hope to see you making words soon. p.s. This is mainly for Antenna. BBS users already know. I tried using ctrl-c.club via my gemlog, but ctrl-c.club Gemini server was down. What's happening?

DIY Gemini Servers... — I am kind of tired of bending over backwards to code CGI games running behind a server built for an entirely different purpose. I am just going to write my own. This is easier than what I am doing now, opening and closing users and game state databases and loading the same stupid files for every click. The game logic is really, really fast with the game pre-loaded. User data is likewise in RAM. The only variable is the network. I could write a simple async server...

Help: a minimal VPS Gemini server with CGI — I am considering getting an OVH VPS for $5/month to run a Gemini server. I have many questions, and appreciate your feedback. Which servers supports CGI and are minimal/easy to manage? Preferably written in C. Can I generate a certificate for Gemini or do I need to buy one somewhere? I would like to avoid registering a domain name and OVH gives you a permanent IP address. Is that workable? Anything else you can think of I should look into?

@requiem, team is not fixing their gemini server. If you were serious about your generous offer, I would love to take you up on it... I promise that it will not cause you any headaches -- other than just keeping your host up. pls email me at stack@ctrl-c.club Let's bring spellbinding, wordo and ensemble back to Gemini together! Many thanks

Have to buy a cheap new phone... Thoughts? — My last phone was a Samsung A14 (meh), and I lost it. I am back to using my old moto G play (2021) with cracked glass, for months now. The glass is very cracked and I am not sure how long before it breaks or starts cutting my finger. So I think I better get a phone. I hate phones and the idea of buying a new one is not at all appealing. I think I will go with a Samsung A15 because it has: a real 3.5mm headphone jack; an SD card slot; a decent camera;...

My Das keyboard failed for 2 minutes, then started working again! I thought my machine locked up as it sometimes does from browser overload, and almost rebooted it, when I noticed that it was actually alive (it's a notebook I keep under the desk). dmesg showed a few error messages with "Possible bad USB cable", and unplugging and plugging it in did nothing (no lights, no response) A little percussive maintenance and it was back to work like nothing ever happened. Is that what they mean by '...
