And my internet is down for hours again, second time this week. Manhattan is a third world country.

So much for self-hosting anyway.

Starlink has a $5/month standby service. It is around 500 kbps. While not for self hosting, I am sorely tempted after 2 weeks ago when I went 2 evenings without Comcast

Actually the correct spelling is COCKMAST

👻 darkghost · Aug 25 at 23:09:

That feels like giving them waaaaay too much credit. CrapCast is more like poo fling which feels more accurate.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. Paying a cocmast bill is a painful experience as they have the worst web site.

Verizon is pretty bad too. NYC fios was today's problem.

Could be worse. You could be an Aussie with no choice but to bend over and be fucked by Telstra.

Out here in the sticks it is CrapCast, a cellular hotspot (I get one bar of service), or satellite such as Starlink. We used to have Verizon DSL but they stopped maintaining the copper lines and no longer offer it. Choice is good!

We tried AT&T ADSL when we opened our shop. They sent out someone to install it. Apparently the copper was so degraded from decades of neglect that they could never get us faster than 2KB/s. The guy told us to just call and cancel.

I had two fibre lines (each on separate physical infra), for a few years. Think there are 5 different fibre providers in town, and then plenty of ISPs that operate ontop of these. I cut back down to the more reliable of the two, to save money but it was fun having the two with auto failover while it lasted.

In rural Canada where the norm was crap long range wireless, I was part of a group that split the cost of a fibre line and shared over directional WiFi. The line was crazy expensive ~$800/month but between 10 homes was worth it, and across a symmetrical gbit link was plenty.

Years ago in the boonies I cantennaed to a neighbor who had their work pay for a really fast connection. It was half a mile away but worked like a charm.

In NYC I have maybe 50 WiFi networks around, some with more power than my own. It was very tempting to try to crack a few.
