My chicks are four weeks old today. They've gone from little fuzzballs who could all sleep in my hand at once to mostly-feathered agents of chaos who only fit in my hand one at a time and who love me more for the treat bowl than anything else. (Also, they have learned to identify the treat bowl.)
I made a baby book for the Wyandotte chicks I brought home yesterday: https://drmollytov.neocities.org/chickens/brooder
As I was putting up library chairs on Wed, one of the kids wandered in and, apropos to nothing, asked me which of the X-Men I am. ...Kiddo, I am obviously Wolverine. I'm short, I'm grouchy, my bones are full of metal, I can smell and hear things no ordinary human should be able to detect, and I have an inexplicable soft spot for teenagers. (I got shafted on the "rapid healing" thing though.)
How early before bedtime is too early to go to bed? Asking for a friend (it's me, I am a friend)
Six months into deleting my social media and ending all my uses of Big Tech, and it's like I'm a different person: gemini://drmollytov.smol.pub/2025-06-02
Nothing causes an epidemic of rapid-onset amnesia among high schoolers like the last week of school. I spent today watching 400 teenagers go "new phone who dis?" at basic directions they've been following all year. If "don't run in the hallways" was your final exam you'd all fail. Oi.
I started June by hanging out at my local bird sanctuary. I saw SO MANY purple martins. Good day.
Today in blog: Don't not talk to me about my garden: gemini://drmollytov.smol.pub/2025-05-23
I typed up new range labels for the newly-genrefied YA fiction today. The first one in the sports section was "ALL-BRO." There was also a "PAR-ROT." I didn't do it on purpose, I swear....
And so begins my least favorite part of being a school librarian: The part where everyone else in the building slacks off for three weeks, but I am absolutely slammed collecting overdues, taking inventory, and so on. At least a couple kids stopped by needing public service hours today - they get to alphabetize, straighten, and dust for me.
I ordered a dog crate to use as a brooder (and as a quarantine home if a chicken gets sick in the future). The box it arrived in says "Not Suitable for Children. For Pets Only." ...yikes
I did it. I ordered hen chicks. Three silver-laced Wyandottes are coming to me June 16. Plenty of time to set up the brooder. Wheeee
I have never become a gardening blogger because I can't write about gardening in the pretty way. To me, gardening is metal af. Here's a blog post about that: //drmollytov.smol.pub/2025-04-30
My 16yo niece asked me today if she can come live with me when she turns 18 "because dad says he's kicking me out then." I'm sure he was just venting, but I wish parents wouldn't say that sort of thing to vent. Being a teen is tough enough without fearing you'll be homeless due to an accident of calendar. (I told her yes; she won't like my rules any more than she likes her parents', but I won't leave her without the option.)
One of my students now thinks I am a wizard. Student asked where to find Alex Haley's ROOTS in the library; I walked right to the shelf and pulled it off. I'm not sure whether to be amused that this kid now thinks I know the exact location of every book or annoyed that my lessons on how to use call numbers didn't seem to take. XD
In the spirit of my "things I said at work" update yesterday, today a kid brought me a piccolo trombone they had 3D printed. Another couple of kids had a conversation about how much it hurts to get an eraser stuck up your nose, which apparently both of them had done. Recently. And a third kid put "get a library emu, name it Gerard" in the suggestion box. ...We've had worse suggestions, honestly. Is it a full moon?
Things I said at work today, without context: "I wouldn't. Remember the Bluey chapsticks?" "Best guess is he died of tuberculosis-induced meningitis or rabies." "You can only buy those from Argentina. Or if you're a penguin, I guess." ...what even is my job?
Welp, that "we'll have your brakes done by EOB today" call from my mechanic turned out to be an April Fools' joke. But I gave my webbed site new CSS and a custom domain name, so life's not all bad. https://samiz.dad
X-Filesposting #2: "End Game" and "Via Negativa." Who wrote this rankings list? gemini://drmollytov.smol.pub/2025-03-30-2
More X-Filesposting (lol): I found a list ranking all 201 episodes (of the original ten seasons), so I'm rewatching the series in this list's order. Wrote some wee spoiler-free reviews from my now-middle-aged perspective: gemini://drmollytov.smol.pub/2025-03-27-2
The X-Files ep "Kill Switch" was creepy in 1998 because sentient evil AI. It's creepy today because it showed me how well I've been trained to assume all tech is malevolent spyware tracking my every move. (Esther gets into a car with a cell phone in it? really? girl, that thing is so trackable....)
Watching The X-Files again and just. Imagine a US government compentent enough to both orchestrate and cover up a massive conspiracy. Wild.
My snowdrops are blooming! Spring is here!!!
Consolidating my tubes-presence on smol.pub: //drmollytov.smol.pub It's nice to type once and publish to Web, Gemini, and Gopher simultaneously. Also, Atom feeds!
I successfully flashed Sailfish OS to a Sony Xperia 10iii today, which means I am now officially free of Oligarch Tech for all my personal computing. Feels fantastic.
I spent my work afternoon planning a library escape room for the students who had no tardies or unexcused absences this marking period. I shall make the children do Puzzles and reward them with Play-Doh (also Jolly Ranchers). *evil laugh*
Things the Cat Will Allow Me to Do: pet the cat Things the Cat Will Not Allow Me to Do: not pet the cat I had to break at least a dozen Cat Laws just to type this. My punishment: pet the cat.
Gemini and Lynx have absolutely ruined me for trying to read online at work. Even though I am a librarian, and one would think nothing could deter me from reading. Apparently Web 2.0 can! My students are DEFINITELY getting a "how to make your own Web page" lunch seminar series next fall. gemini://drmollytov.flounder.online/gemlog/2025-03-03.gmi
It's been one of those days where nothing works the way it should and for no discernible reason. But the guac I made with dinner was excellent, so there's that.
