The X-Files ep "Kill Switch" was creepy in 1998 because sentient evil AI. It's creepy today because it showed me how well I've been trained to assume all tech is malevolent spyware tracking my every move. (Esther gets into a car with a cell phone in it? really? girl, that thing is so trackable....)

@drmollytov thank you for your in-depth reply, I really appreciate it! The whole premise of X-Files has always intrigued me, I guess it may be time to bite the bullet and start watching it :) · 8 months ago
Truth be told, I've never seen the X-files. They always sounded interesting, in the same sense that I enjoy the occational SCP science fiction. Too much of the early sci-fi strikes me as naievely optomisitic about human nature, in a way that simply doesn't match reality. Maybe the grittier sorts like x-files are more realistic? · 8 months ago
one of my favorite xfiles!! · 8 months ago
@dariolob I should clarify: the central premise holds up as well as it ever did. (The "mythology" episodes are notorious for being inconsistent at best. Which you might expect of a show that wrote "some kind of shadowy conspiracy that may or may not exist" across ten seasons. Don't expect the "big picture" on those to make any sense, just enjoy them.) · 8 months ago
@dariolob I know the show so well it's hard for me to imagine seeing it for the first time today, but: Yes. Some things about it will give you time travel whiplash (like the desktop computers and cell phones that constantly drop calls), and some of the show themes are obviously focused on the anxieties of the time. But the central premise and the characters' various relationships hold up pretty well. For instance, I watched "Beyond the Sea" (S01E13) last night, and it could have been made today, easily. · 8 months ago
Slightly off topic, but would you recommend watching X-files for the first time nowadays? Has it aged well, generally speaking? When it aired originally I was still a bit too young, but now I’m wondering if it’s something I should catch up on. · 8 months ago
