Dumphone - w/MCU hello. I wanted to ask if anyone was interested in building their own dumbphone...? And thought maybe this is a good place to ask, and maybe we could a community around that. I myself would focus only on these things: - Calling - Texting - Music And probably the hardest: - Navigation I don't think linux or anything is needed for that, and would only make it more complicated, just a low end MCU. Maybe that could make it better in other qualities like battery and...
New here, just testing things out. I think I need to be approved by admin or something? Anyways. Really excited to be here.
I've been on a road trip to northern Norway for the past two weeks. We drove all the way up to Tromsø and then down to Lofoten. Super impressed with the views along the way! I've never been there before, so the mountains and curving coastlines were really impressive. We were also lucky to have great sunny weather for optimal picture-taking for most of the trip. A particular highlight was needing to fix a sudden Python dependency issue on the skyjake.fi/BBS Gemini server, using on iPad, while...
So... I have a problem. Just switched back to Fedora, and it was going fine, until I restarted today, and now my system is stuck in "emergency mode". Says "Press enter to continue" and gets stuck on "Starting default.target". So, I have no idea what to do to fix this. There were no error messages. I tried checking the fstab, and that's fine. I checked the btrfs partition for errors, and there weren't any. I disabled the nvidia hibernation services (using chroot), and that didn't fix anything....
Our /b (random) — Friends, I've thinking about it for a while and created a place in the subspace for random topics and dicussion that often do not fill the existing subspaces. Though surely it should be better creating on for each topic, I know they can be turned into ghost subspaces and more or less some people avoid creating them because of it. The meaning of this subspace is to not flood or dirt other subspaces with less relevant topics and chitchat, not limiting anyone. Please forgive...
Reports of its death are greatly exaggerated — I've seen posts here and there talking about how Gemini and Geminispace is dying, and I dunno, I have seen some capsules go offline but there's still a fair bit of activity. Of course, I tend to check places like BBS, tootik and Midnight.pub which are more social places, I have individual gemlogs in my feeds that I check, and I have some favourite games on Gemini that I come back to. Some capsules are gone, but plenty of them are still around. I...
Automating Git Repo Updates and Navigation with a POSIX Shell Script Managing multiple Git repositories for different services or components can get tedious. Whether you're working on small personal projects like a blog, a Gemini site, or HTTP microservices, jumping between directories and pulling the latest changes manually is a chore. That’s why I wrote a simple, POSIX-compliant shell script to: Automatically pull updates from a list of Git repositories Provide an interactive menu to open...
Just finished adding all the links to The List[tm] on gem.bahai.fyi. It's a list of links to websites about the study of the Baha'i Faith, and its relations to other religions. @clseibold: you might find some of these interesting for your Scholastic Diversity project. They're not all working at the moment as the list is over twelve years old now, but I'm hoping to replace the broken links with archive links later on.
Folding Kayaks... — Not sure why, but I keep looking at Oru Kayaks with envy and anger! I wrote up a page on my gemlog... [gemini link]
Hello. I am new to Gemini. I have no idea what I'm doing here. ;)
I have a list of Gemini links on my capsule, but they haven't been updated in a while, and I'm looking for more fun additions. Do you have any recommendations? (Feel free to promote yourself if you'd like!)
I Added Scripting To Gemini — I wrote a gemlog about it. It doesn't break the spec and works in all clients. In a nutshell, it's a service that interprets gemini pages with embedded JavaScript. There are a couple example programs at the link including a simple game. Because scripts have the ability to request data from the user, it's much more useful than first thought.
Major bug in AuraSearch's crawler was just fixed: the robots.txt parser. When the crawler can't find a "User-Agent" string in robots.txt, this caused crashes before, so a long time ago I added code to prepend "User-agent: *" to assume that whatever follows applied to all user agents. And since most robots.txt files use robots.txt for Disallows, it would disallow the crawler from crawling those paths. Hence, the crawler takes a conservative approach when the robots.txt is improperly written....
I have been here a while, mostly lurking, and I realise I never really introduced myself. I work in video games, and I am ancient by internet standards (my 1st tool to access the internet was a 14.4K modem). I really like tea, reading (essays, biographies, novels of the fantasy / horror / scifi kind), science, and art. I have a close group of friends since I was a teenager and we meet and play tabletop games every Friday - except now I am spending some time in Poland and I am missing all our...
Just launched an experimental RSS feed for the Yggdrasil peers BitTorrent tracker, based on the Aquatic + aquatic-crawler toolkit. The feed is here: [http link] [http link] Alfis DNS [gemini link] NewsFlash demo Aggregation feed for the Mycelium network will be available a bit later, as I want to test the crawler on the more popular tracker first. To join the aggregation results, simply add this tracker to BitTorrent client: udp://[302:68d0:f0d5:b88d::fdb]:6969
step one — I quite like running, and cycling (of which there is /s/bicycles) and other forms of activity away from a computer. The irony of wanting to talk about things away from a computer on a computer is not lost on me. Nevertheless, I wrote down some thoughts on running and thought others might have their own so created this sub.
Baby steps — I have officially registered for a gemlog, and made my first technical work into organizing my exploration through gemini by creating myself a homepage! I know it's not much, but I am going to take it slow with my new hobby.
Phil Ochs — One of my earliest memories of folk music in general and political folk in particular is of Phil Ochs. There’s a wee podcast episode available on tor which introduces some of his music if people haven’t heard it before. His music is available on streaming services etc but nice to have a few choice songs picked out. [http link] [nex link]
New Post: Get Gotify Notifications From NUT server [gemini link] It's nice to get updated on my phone in case of a power outage.
PSA: Allow and Disallow /foo/*/bar/ isn't supported in Gemini — Quick reminder: Robots.txt in Gemini only supports the original robots.txt standard, which is a very small subset of modern robots.txt feature. Essentially the only allowed rule type is `Disallow`, and even there it only defines a "prefix". It does not support wildcard characters in the middle of rule. So all of the follow...
Not what first comes to mind, but for the inaugural ferment, here is my approach to sourdough I will write up some of the many other things I have bubbling away in the near future.
Gotify - Get notifications about everything on your phone — Get notified on your Android phone with a simple curl command and Gotify [gemini link]
Self explanatory code — "All your functions and variable names should be self explanatory". Am I doing it right? [preformatted] This is top clean code, right? All names in the program are self explanotory! No magic numbers, either. All constants have a self explanotory name too! These names are sure better than single letter variable names and put the constants directly in the code, right? ------------------------------- ------------------------------- -------------------------------- In case...

Watching Zack Snyder's Justice League for the first time. I never realized how much Joss Whedon butchered the first-released version of this movie. Wow. And apparently he's a massive dick too, and tons of actors will never work with him again. He literally cut some of the best most emotional scenes of this movie. And apparently he took The Avengers script and just rewrote it without contacting the original writer. Many of the Justice League and Buffy actors all agree that he was abusive. So...
