Linux has a penguin, GNU has a wildebeest, Firefox has a red panda... Open question: Should the Gemini protocol have its own mascot?

A) No, it's not necessary.

B) Yes, it would be fun for the community to have a mascot.

Let's see if any ASCII art artist can come up with something. · 1 month ago

@digbat The idea or basis behind this question was to make the Gemini protocol attractive. This protocol needs HTTP to become known, and even in its early stages (correct me if I'm wrong), it was intended to be a protocol that could coexist with others. If we add a mascot (I think ASCII is the ideal idea), it could attract more people. If people associate “type of mascot = Gemini protocol,” it could grow in number of users, or at least that's my personal opinion.

I usually write articles in HTTP to promote Gemini, and I often have the problem of what image to use to represent it. The idea of a mascot could be a possible solution 🙂 · 1 month ago

given that this is not the interweb - no pets:-) nothing, or minimal ascii art gemini capsule. · 1 month ago

Like @jsreed5, the idea never occurred to me.

Maybe an ASCII art rendered mascot can be fine. · 1 month ago

A few days ago I learned about this idea and I was in favor of proposing Laika in the first place, but seeing that they commented that ~solderpunk talked about a turtle and casually reading "Momo" by Michael Ende I figured that that would be the ideal mascot, because Momo's turtle is also called "Cassiopeia" · 1 month ago

Since Gemini is a text-oriented protocol, to be frank, the idea of a pictorial mascot has never occurred to me. · 1 month ago

It's interesting because after reviewing the father of the Gemini protocol a little, I noticed that Solderpunk uses a turtle as a “reference animal” which, curiously, and this is a personal opinion, may represent Gemini's philosophy of taking things slowly. · 1 month ago

As a fan of insects, I would suggest the FRUIT FLY - the first animal sent up in space (Feb. 1947).

"the flies didn’t have much of a say when they blasted off on a V-2 rocket launched from New Mexico’s White Sands Proving Grounds on Feb. 20, 1947. But as the first animals intentionally shot into and returned alive from space, the insects’ journey heralded a new age in space research and exploration."

I like the space theme. If can be spaceships, or astronauts, or satellites, anything. We can be in orbit or deep space or the dark side of the moon depending on the mood. · 1 month ago

current spaceish lore is enough for me tbh. and i even feel it's better than a mascot cause everyone can modify lore to their needs (someone may think of UFO and/or tech on ISS, some other person about being sucked by black hole and someone else can think of solar energy…) while it's still same. · 1 month ago

Gemini has a mascot of sorts, it's the Gemini rocket, and the space theme. If you mean an animal or creature, that could be nice. Station uses the Communion gray alien as a kind of default figure, but it's not very friendly *as a mascot* and a bit over used by now. How about Laika, the first dog sent to space? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laika · 1 month ago
