Gemini and Insects
Linux has a penguin, GNU has a wildebeest, Firefox has a red panda... Open question: Should the Gemini protocol have its own mascot? ( via psyko @station)
As a fan of insects, I would suggest the FRUIT FLY - the first animal sent up in space (Feb. 1947).
"the flies didn?t have much of a say when they blasted off on a V-2 rocket launched from New Mexico?s White Sands Proving Grounds on Feb. 20, 1947. But as the first animals intentionally shot into and returned alive from space, the insects? journey heralded a new age in space research and exploration."

The First Bug
In the summer of 1945 we were building Mark II; we had to build it in an awful rush-it was wartime-out of components we could get our hands on. We were working in a World War I temporary building. It was a hot summer and there was no air-conditioning, so all the windows were open. Mark II stopped, and we were trying to get her going. We finally found the relay thatad failed. Inside the relay-and these were large relays was a moth that had been beaten to death by the relay. We got a pair of tweezers. Very carefully we took the moth out of the relay, put it in the logbook, and put scotch tape over it.
Now, Commander Howard Aiken had a habit of coming into the room and saying, "Are you making any numbers?" We had to have an excuse when we weren't making any numbers. From then on if we weren't making any numbers, we told him that we were debugging the computer. To the best of my knowledge that's where it started. Giovanni Santi (c.?1435 ? 1 August 1494) was an Italian painter and decorator, father of Raphael Sanzio. He was born in 1435 at Colbordolo in the Duchy of Urbino. He studied under Piero della Francesca and was influenced by Fiorenzo di Lorenzo. He was court painter to the Duke of Urbino and painted several altarpieces among other things. He died in Urbino.

The Fly (1958 film), Return of the Fly (1959 film) & Curse of the Fly (1965 film): a trilogy
The Fly (1958) tells the story of a scientist who is transformed into a grotesque human?fly hybrid after a common house fly enters unseen into a molecular transporter with which he is experimenting, resulting in his atoms being combined with those of the insect. The film was released in CinemaScope by 20th Century Fox, with color by Deluxe. It was followed by two black-and-white sequels, Return of the Fly (1959) and Curse of the Fly (1965). A remake directed by David Cronenberg was released in 1986.
Return of the Fly (1959 ) is an American horror science-fiction film and sequel to The Fly (1958). It is the second installment in The Fly film series. It was released in 1959 .I t was directed by Edward Bernds. Unlike the previous film, Return of the Fly was shot in black and white.
Curse of the Fly (1965) is a British horror science-fiction film directed by Don Sharp and a sequel to Return of the Fly (1959), as the third installment in The Fly film series. Unlike the other films in the series it was produced in the United Kingdom.
