Oh HECK no: https://leg.colorado.gov/bills/SB26-051 Colorado legislation requiring *Operating System*-level API that will respond with any given user's age-bracket information. This bill is under consideration in colorado. If you (or a VPN you know) lives in CO, please say something to those legislators along the lines of: "If you wanted to protect children, you should release the epstein files, and reduce the rates of SA in public schools, instead of creating more dystopian surveillance pathways like this."

I'll admit: I have a hard time squaring this, practically, with the fact that Linux From Scratch exists: https://www.linuxfromscratch.org/lfs/view/13.0-systemd/ · 1 month ago

@xaogray : the positive things is that, because the legistlators are as totally inept as you say, they'll be unable to tell whether Linux is in compliance or not. I don't they're able even to envisage a computer that doesn't have a Windows-type user interface, and is designed to do more than run a web browser. Their horizons don't extent that far.

Normally I'd say that's a bad thing but here, perhaps, not so much. · 1 month ago

@lars_the_bear I doubt that. But more likely they'll try a number of hair brained things to attempt to do so. When it comes to things of this nature our lawmakers are impossibly inept, and my fear is that in their flailing to do something they don't understand they'll do collatteral damage.

That said it's also not hard to tell what OS someone is coming to a website from.

As with all things of this nature, I'm really more worried about their ineptatude and the damage that can do than anything else. People that know nothing about the subject they're presiding over should not in my opinion be allowed to make laws. · 1 month ago

@xoagray:

states that implement these laws may try to ban Linux users in their borders...

They'll send law enforcement agents to break down people's doors with rifle butts, to search for illicit Linux installations? · 1 month ago

I've been keeping up on this a little, it's now like 4 other states outside CA and CO that are considering these ridiculous laws. This stuff is always presented as being to "protect the children" but it never is. I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up in all 50 states before long.

@lars_the_bear Unfortunately, Linux will directly be effected. Right now many major distros are working on a way to comply with the new CA law, and there's also the chance that if they can't,states that implement these laws may try to ban Linux users in their borders. The stupid here could make a huge mess that makes it hard on everyone. · 1 month ago

I don't want to live in a world that goes down this path. It's going to get far worse before it gets better. But I don't know when it will get better. · 1 month ago

I don't know what purpose these laws are supposed to serve, apart from giving a bunch of politicians a way to feel like they're doing something. But, thankfully, I can't see any way they can meaningfully be imposed on Linux. So I'm not all that worried. Of course, I don't have to be, since I don't live in any of the affected areas. Yet. · 1 month ago

@lars_the_bear California already passed it and it kicks in Jan 1st 2027, Colorado have put the OPs linked bill forward but it is yet to be passed. However, Brazil passed an OS level age verification law last year and it takes effect in around 12 days time :/ All been covered by Lunduke Journal. · 1 month ago

I believe California has already implemented this. I think what's going to happen is that software will be supplied with a disclaimer to the effect that it shouldn't be used in California. · 1 month ago
