Honestly the Fediverse doesn't excite me at all; and I don't really grasp all this enthusiasm around it.

I am doing what I used to do ten years ago just worsen, the main protocol has been baked by the W3C that is full control by the worst of worst...

I have seen more interesting thing here, the protocol, Station, Lagrange, Telescope...

All amazing things made with passion and fun... Absolutely love them all!

@cobradile94 I don't necessarily hate social media, but since I've come back to the geminiverse I am spending lesser time of the Fediverse and I am doing other stuff, because eventually even the Fediverse is absorbing you... · 6 months ago

I never got it either. Don’t get me wrong, it’s better than corporate controlled social media and I’m glad it’s catching on to a degree, but I hate social media in general. · 6 months ago

Yeah, I was pretty all-over Bluesky and its @ protocol, but nothing interesting has really come out of it yet (in my opinion!).

I’ve recently been exploring Gemini and Gopher for the first time and they ACTUALLY seem like interesting and deep protocols to browse.

…and my biggest problem with the Fediverse (Mastodon specifically) is that it’s instance to instance which I don’t love. Like data is stored on that instance and if it ever shuts down, oh well, game over :/ · 7 months ago

I like it too. Simply I don't share the same excitement as many. Probably I am biased and I have been using Diaspora/Friendica from 2014 thus the Fediverse is nothing new to me... 🤷‍♂️ · 7 months ago

i personally like it, and host a smol instance (akkoma). it's different from other social media because federation makes it both extremely easy to find your community by interests or identity, and moderate in a way that you won't encounter any unpleasant people. also it's ad-free and completely unprofitable for corpos just like gemini, which is pretty neat in our trying times :3

also there is at least one neat project for fediverse over gemini - tootik · 7 months ago

I don't divide the world in "techies" and "normies", those are categories that don't make sense to me...

The Fediverse is a "cheap" alternative to private social networks but they can't substitute them. Fediverse makes when we have a constellation of small servers that host few users each.

Any attempt to make it bigger will end up in predatory behavior from within and out

side the Fediverse as already happened.

Anyway the point is that the Fediverse leverage a technology that is at the antepodes of the Gemini philosophy and that I deeply disapprove. · 7 months ago

fediverse misses the point, which is that federation doesn't fix the problem with modern social media · 7 months ago

I'm not certain that ActivityPub specifically is going to be the final basis for federated services long-term (note that for example Matrix has a different spec team/protocol). Ultimately what's cool is that it's gotten the idea into people's heads, both techies and others, that services can be distributed and there's some alternative from "give this one company all your data." IMO what helps the world become better is articulating the problem and a good idea for fixing it, and that's exactly what the fediverse is achieving at the moment! ^_^ · 7 months ago
