I made a new release of the GTL Tinylog Reader/Editor: v1.2.0-fork. This release upgrades the dependencies to tcell/v3 and the cview branch with upgrades to tcell/v3 too. Since the release of v1.2.0-fork tslocum merged it's WIP on the "tcellv3" branch of codeberg.org/tslocum/cview into master, but there aren't any changes which need a rebuild of GTL. tslocum will make a tag release of the new version soon, so I can use the regular tag release for my releases instead of (now) master.

GTL Git Repository on codeberg.org
GTL Tag Releases binaries

The new tcell/v3 version fixes some problems with modal windows (you couldn't go back in button selection with SHIFT/TAB, now this works again), and I also fixed a bug with ALT/Enter when the sidebar is focussed.

So please use the new version and report bugs on the issue tracker, write an email or post on your tinylog. Thanks alot.

RE: @fab@redterminal.org 2025-12-09 12:26 +0100

The Cherry KC 4500 Ergo keyboard arrived today. It seems to be a good keyboard. The key travel is good and the keys are easy to press. I still have to get used a little to my first ergonomic keyboard but I believe that won't take a long time. I think its a good keyboard, although the pound sign ("#") with the single quote under it and the "<", ">" and "|" keys are a little small (which I need often for programming). But all in all it's a good buy I think. Lets see how it turns out in the long run. But at first use I'm happy with it.

RE: @samhunter 2025-12-08 21:02 +0100
BTW: did you look at Cherry KC 4500 Ergo? It's 50 Euro, has the "notebook style" Fn key squeezed between Left Ctrl and Alt, but other than that it looks normal.

That's a real coincidence: The Cherry KC 4500 Ergo was the keyboard I ordered the same day (Saturday), when the other keyboard arrived :). I got it for around ~44 EUR with free shipping. I also looked closely at the keyboard and it seems to have a normal keylayout. It should arrive on Thursday or Friday.

*EDIT*: I received the "Logitech" keyboard yesterday, not Saturday. Sorry.

RE: @fab@redterminal.org 2025-12-02 11:58 +0100

The "Logitech ERGO K860" arrived today and it's pure crap! The "Windows/ALT"" and "Windows/ALT gr" and some other keys are layed together and are only reachable through a big fat function key. It would have been easy to make this function key smaller (for functions like brightness control and loudness under the "F" keys) and make Windows key separate with the "ALT" and "ALT gr" key. It's impossible to press "Windows" and "ALT" together, which I often need for my AwesomeWM setup.

Goes back unused!

I don't know your special needs concerning a mailserver, but have you ever considered the "mox" Email Suite? It's one little self contained binary available for Linux, the *BSDs and even Darwin. I'm not sure but there maybe also a version for windows. It contains everything a mailserver needs, even an IMAPs server. It's easy to update. If a new update is available its simply stopping the mailserver, replacing the binary and restart. Have a look:

Mox Email Suite

Today I already upgraded my mail server and my Gemini/Gopher/Finger/SmolWeb server from FreeBSD-14.3-RELEASE to FreeBSD-15.0-RELEASE, which was released today.

I had some problems to get my finger server script running and completely replaced the entry in the inetd.conf from running the fingerserver, which was configured to run my own script, to just run my script directly, because the fingerserver didn't terminate the connection after someone fingered the server. Now with only my script running, this problem is gone and it works as expected. There seem to be some changes in the /usr/libexec/fingerd binary which prevented the termination of the connection after running the script. I hope I didn't open any security holes :). However, now it works as it should.

FreeBSD is simply great!

RE: @samhunter 2025-12-02 08:51 +0100

I've just ordered a "Logitech ERGO K860" wireless ergonomic keyboard. I've looked at the Microsoft Sculpt, but it's a bit pricey, with over 220 EUR and it was sold out. The Logitech goes by around 88 EUR. I'll try it out. If it's shit, I send it back. I've read the (only the bad) critiques but there seem to be not too many problems with this keyboard.

I have to say, it's very difficult to find a good keyboard at Amazon (or anything at all with all this enshittification). They always want to sell cheap NoName Keyboards with made up company names. And I always got keyboards with the wrong layout shown, although I specified "deutsch" (german) and "qwertz" in the search bar.

Eff Amazon!

I'll post about my experiences with this keyboard.

No worries, we're on the 'slow internet' ;) I see my tinylog more as a place of posting unsolicited opinions than a communication platform.

Thanks for your patience! :)

Well, as I'm already at it: you might look into 'tenless' (or 'semi-tenless' keyboards with detached number block) and split keyboards. Many people complain the angle between two halves isn't fitting their needs -- with a split keyboard the problem disappears completely. A potential drawback is either the cable connecting the two halves or (in some cases) having two Bluetooth devices paired... But I didn't see anyone really despising that part ;)

I'm not sure if I can get used to a split keyboard, I really have to test these out, before buying one. I don't mind a cable between the two parts but they seem so 'strange' to me. A 'tenless' keyboard on the other hand wouldn't be such a problem, although I always use their PAGEUP/PAGEDOWN keys, but I think I would get used to a 'tenless' very quickly.

If possible -- try to put your hands on a real, physical one at a brick-and-mortar store before buying.

Yes that would be best, but in the part of Germany I'm living in it's difficult to find a store which sells computer parts. They're all victims of the Amazon Monster. So I think I have to buy there too, being careful not to buy some of the crap they want to put down my throat.

I'm partial to Microsoft keyboards (a definitely personal preference -- I am on my second (in 10 years) Sculpt, and I had Ergonomic before. That's pretty much the only M$ product I used voluntarily since 2000s.
Evoluent Goldtouch looks 'legit', and -- based on their left-handed vertical mouse's quality -- I'm sure it's solid. There's of course the Kinesis, but you'll pay through your nose to get one... But then -- it's an investment everyone has to consideer for themselves -- I'm a cheap bastard ;)

I'll definitely take your advice into consideration. I don't mind if the keyboard is a microsoft product (I already buy at Amazon, which I'm also not proud of). And I believe I can send them back if I really can't deal with it. And I'm at a point at which I don't mind to pay some more money. But the keyboard definitely has to be convenient.

Logitech is another brand with good keyboards, but their ergonomic keyboards are not my thing -- I have no idea what doesn't match my expectations, but something feels off when I try to type on them.
Wireless or 'optionally wireless' with a detachable USB cable -- I shunned them for years ("what I'm going to do when my keyboard stops working?"), but in reality it takes months to drain the two AAA batteries -- and I'm typing for a living (and fun, after work...)

I think I have a wireless keyboard somewhere laying around, but it was a cheap buy to use with my headless Raspberry Pis in case of emergency. It also has a touchpad, which I thought was good idea back then (it wasn't). But I think I still use the same AAA batteries that came with this keyboard or changed them once. It came with a 2.4 GHz dongle, so I'm not sure if one could eavesdrop the communication.

Concerning bluetooth, I've managed to this day not to use any bluetooth devices, so I don't have any experiences with these. I think my desktop doesn't even support it, so I have to buy a dongle, but that would be the least problem. I'm just a little concerned about the range the keyboard can get away from the dongle, because I have to put it at the back of my desktop. But it would be cool to sit in my chair, leaning back and conveniently typing from my lap :).

There are also many mechanical designs as well -- I was raised on IBM and Wang "concrete slab" keyboards, but somehow I'm not missing the "click-clack" or the long travel on every tap.

I think I'll try out some keyboards and until I'll find one that fits my needs I'll send them back.

Thanks for your advice! I'm really grateful for them.

A good, ergonomic keyboard, and a good, ergonomic mouse (for the times when I'm in `acme` and/or on Plan9) make a big difference.
There's essentially _no reason_ to waste your time and health on typing on cheap or overhyped ("mechanical", "gaming", "75%" and whatever the cat dragged home from TikTok or Youtube) keyboards.

@samhunter Sorry for the late answer, your Tinylog entry must have slipped through. I just found your entry while testing the search filter function of GTL :).

Yes, you're right. I should buy a reasonable, ergonomic keyboard. I've worked with computers for such a long time now and don't know much about keyboards, especially ergonomic ones. But the mechanical keyboard I'm using now is really a pain to work with, so it seems I have to invest a little more money and buy a good keyboard. I don't know about the prices and types of good, ergonomic keyboards, but I think it will pay out in the end. I have to search for some information, I don't want to buy something that is even worse than what I have now, I really have to use a lot of force to press the keys with this shitty cheap gaming keyboard.

And all this, although I set up my desktop/laptops to use the mouse as little as possible a long time ago. The keyboard of my Lenovo Thinkpad T460s is good to work with, the keyboard on my more 'powerful' laptop could be better (especially for what I've paid for it).

My hand is better now. It seems I've slept in a strange position, squishing the wrist of my hand, so it's not just the keyboard. This happens from time to time. I'll look into ergonomic keyboards anyway. Thanks for your post.

And again: Sorry for the late answer.

I just made another tag release of the GTL Tinylog reader. Besides some bugfixes there is the main improvement of usable bookmarks with "Open Links", "Open Thread", "Reply", "Delete" and "Open Tinylog" functionality. So you can bookmark entries and answer them later and such things.

The binaries for Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD for amd64 and arm64 architectures can be downloaded here:

Hope to you have fun with this release. If you have any ideas for new features or if you have problems, I would like to hear of them.

Have fun!

Does anybody know, if @bacardi55 still reacts to Tinylog submissions to add to the 'official' Tinylog list? It seems he doesn't work on anything Gemini related anymore, although he posted a web blog entry two days ago.

I would inherit the offical list again, because I think he doesn't really maintain it anymore. I'll start with his list which is at the moment still reachable on his capsule. I'll also make a gemlog post about it and make the list available for download. In the meantime you maybe should send me an email with your tinylog address if you want it to be on the list if it still is not. I'll start with the recent list downloaded from bacardi55's site at Thu, 27 Nov 2025.

I'll keep an up-to-date version on my capsule again.

RE: @roughnecks 2025-11-26 17:56 +0100

It *seems* the problem with preformatted text is now gone, at least in my tests. I made a new bugfix release, which can be downloaded here:

I hope for some people testing this release.

@fab I am alreadly limiting posts from each tinylog, but the difference is still 1 vs 30 (? not sure, I haven't counted) of them.
I'll do it for myself anyway and if anyone is interested, they can grab the link on my capsule, when published.

I discovered that GTL downloads all the Tinylog content anyway despite any limit in the TUI. It just limits the displayed entries. But if you don't limit the display of entries, GTL can get a little sluggish, so an entry of

tui_max_entries = 100

should be fine. But I can't understand your problems that GTL takes too long to load. On my systems it takes from 1-3 seconds to download all active tinylogs. That's not too long, I think.

2025-11-26 00:32 +0100

Now I see the bug is still there. I thought I've fixed it. Sorry for that. It takes a while to get it right.

2025-11-25 23:40 +0100

RE: @roughnecks 2025-11-25 19:26 +0100
On the tinylog's subject: an aggregated log is much faster to load than `#n` individual logs. If there is interest, I can build one with all of the entries in the previous subs.txt file that @fab sent.

At first I have to say that I had a regression of an old bug which I created a HotFix for. So everybody should download the new Version as soon as possible. The use of '##' in a preformatted text block broke the whole display of entries in 'tui' and 'gemini' mode. This is now fixed.

To your problem:

You can limit the numbers of entries to load with the following option in your gtl.toml config file. It takes indeed much longer to load all the entries from all Tinylogs.

# That's enough to stay up-to-date if you look every 2 or 3 days
tui_max_entries = 100

To reply you have to set the following entries in your gtl.toml:

At first you need to set the $EDITOR environment variable to your editor in your bash config or whatever shell you're using, to open it for replying, for example VIM or Nano. Then you have to set the following options:

# set this to enable editing
allow_edit = true

Then you have to set the path to your local tinylog.gmi file:

tinylog_path = 'gemini/site/tinylog_path.gmi'

You should also set your upload script, which you can run after closing the editor (must be executable) for automatic upload:

post_edit_script = "~/bin/upload_tinylog.sh"

You can then set your GTL to refresh the timeline after uploading

post_edit_refresh = true

You should also copy a preformatted answer text to your clipboard, so you can paste it into your editor. This needs the programs 'xclip' or 'xsel'. It's a complete entry with recent timestamp, reply line and the quoted text to answer in your clipboard.

tui_copy_stub_clipboard = true
tui_show_stub = true

Then you can choose the entry you want to reply to with <Shift-J>/<Shift-K> or use your mouse to select the entry, and then press <Shift-R> to reply. You can also get a help menu with the '?' key.

I think I have to update the documentation in the README.md files in the repository to make things clear. But I hope this helps.

2025-11-25 16:09 +0100

RE: @roughnecks 2025-11-25 15:34 +0100
@fab I just ran your gtl version and it's almost all okay, but the emoji in author's field are still broken for me, but only for bacardi's tinylogs; the one I generate myself is still ok.

Do you still use his aggregated tinylogs in your subscriptions config file? If yes, then disable it and download the subscriptions list from here:

and point your config file to the subs.txt file. I hope bacardi55 hasn't added his aggregator to the list, then you need to disable/delete the @gtl entry in the file. I *believe* it's a problem with bacardi55's aggregated feed, so if you fully disable it, the problems should be gone. I think all active tinylogs are in this subscription file. Just delete the one from "@gtl".

Another thing: I set up CI on my Codeberg repository for GTL, so it now creates directly usable binaries for Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD, each for the x86_64 (amd64) and the arm64 architectures on every new release tag.

So if you don't want or can't build Go binaries you can now simply download a ready made binary.

Happy bug hunting! :)

2025-11-25 06:02 +0100

RE: @fab@redterminal.org 2025-11-24 19:32 +0100

I also added support for relative links now in all modes (TUI, cli, gemini) in GTL, which are often used by @toby@tobykurien.com :). These work good in my tests but there may be bugs in the regular expressions I've missed.

So as always I'm thankful for any testing.

2025-11-24 19:32 +0100

I fixed the display of preformatted text blocks in GTL (which was really difficult, and in the end the solution was easy). The new color option is:

tui_color_preformatted = "00A000"

I also did the following changes:

I would be pleased if some of you will test the new commits and report errors and problems. After some time of testing I'll tag a new release.

You can find the GTL fork repository here:

Testing is much appreciated!

2025-11-23 19:56 +0100

RE: @roughnecks 2025-11-23 12:54 +0100
@fab: Let me know if you want an open issue after having seen these shots, but also tell me what I should write.

=> https://sharer.woodpeckersnest.space/FuzE5/JoHaWAgI68/raw.jpg Shot 2

I looked at the screenshots. As far as I know you can disable the @gtl feed aggregator in the older versions in the 'subs' file in your configs. In the version I forked I disabled the automatic @gtl feed aggregator so you'll only see the normal Tinylog feeds you put in your 'subs' file yourself. So it should look *alright*. (despite the preformatted blocks yet). The @gtl aggregator doesn't seem to work right with GTL. Not sure what bacardi55 did there (and why).

The official feeds file is still maintained by bacardi55 (but I have doubts), where you can download a recent feeds file:

The official feeds file maintained by bacardi55
As you can see, posts from @wpn are fine, like for emotes, while posts from @gtl have a few visual issues.
All of this started happening several (a few?) months ago; in the beginning even @gtl was looking good.

I'm working on the fork at the moment. I'm currently working on the 'gemini' mode, so maybe you can use this soon for your capsule. In TUI mode I already added word wrapping and am working on the right display of preformatted blocks. Most of the work is already done by bacardi55 I sometimes only have to tweak some things. But to get the preformatted textblocks display right is a hassle. I screamed at my laptop multiple times. But I'm sure I'll get this right also. I just need some time. You don't need to to open an issue on Codeberg. But I would be happy if you would try the newer versions, but only if you want.

2025-11-23 01:32 +0100

RE: @roughnecks 2025-11-21 23:31 +0100

I removed the @gtl header in GTL gemini mode, so it won't show up anymore. I'm not sure what your problem with GTL exactly is, you just told me that it doesn't work as you expect. Maybe you get a little more precise and I can help you. You could open an issue on the issue tracker with your exact problem:

GTL Issue tracker on codeberg.org (www)

I'm not sure how to fix your problem with your emoji glitches, but maybe somebody else has an idea about the problem. In my tests with the amfora browser I didn't have any problems with the emojis, so I can't really anticipate what your problem with emojis is. I saw it was broken in your answer to my last post but I'm not sure why, so I can't exactly tell if it's a problem with gtl or maybe your editor or maybe your character encoding. But normally gtl never includes the emoji in a reply line (maybe because of this problem) at least in the newer versions. But I would really be thankful if you provide more details 🙏.

Hallo @fab. I'm not an avid GTL user as well, so I post something in my tinylog from time to time, then open the actual sofware whenever I have free time.
Agreed on sourcehut, I don't like it very much myself.

>

My issues so far are pretty much a few glitches about how bacardi's tinylogs are displayed in GTL. I have a local aggregated tinylog, which is created by GTL software itself, but that doesn't show the same symptoms. I set everything up last year, so yeah, I'm not running any new stuff.

In the meantime I set up a fork of GTL on my Codeberg.org account, where I already applied the open patches. I decided to do so to accept Pull Requests and patches submitted with 'git send-email' and include these in a timely manner. I won't develop much on the project myself but I want others to include their PRs and submissions if they have interest in the project. I hope there are at least some.

You can find it here:

Maybe (hopefully) some people are interested in fixing bugs and make it ready for use as a CGI script. Maybe you'll be able to use it then. I won't recommend it to you yet - except for testing.

I'll also make a gemlog post about the fork to make it public. The more people know about it the better.

2025-11-16 23:44 +0100

@roughnecks At first, thanks for your mention! I have to admit that I haven't been following my TinyLog stream for a long time (about 2 month or so). I'll try to follow again in future.

And yes, there are some issues with GTL. I also patched it myself with all sent in patches since the last release, but I can't find the development mailinglist at the moment, where you can find the patches, sorry. I hate sourcehut for not showing the development mailing list on the repository page :( So you have to search for it yourself. I still use GTL (the patched version) and I'm not really happy, but satisfied with it. I don't care for emojis anyway.

If GTL doesn't work for you anymore, I'm not sure what you can do. There are not many alternatives out there. Maybe you should ask @Sandra what she uses. I think she has something with which she can also post from her phone. Best would be if GTL finds a new maintainer. @bacardi55 seems to have abandoned the project. But don't ask me! I won't maintain GTL although it would be worth it, in my opinion.

No censorship is good. And doing a "right (in your eyes) thing" doesn't make a villain one of the "good guys".

I completely agree. Censorship is always bad. Instead the population should be educated about the nefarious practices of the banned companies and told not to use them for their own benefit. But I guess Nepal had some more political reasons to ban these things.

Yesterday I worked for a long time at my desktop computer with a cheap gaming keyboard. I'm trying to avoid using the mouse as much as possible. The left part of the wrist always rests on the table.

This morning I woke up and my left, little finger was completely numb. It could be a case of Sulcus Ulinaris Syndrome, where the nerve to the little finger is pinched in the elbow. But that's usually associated with pain, but I have no pain, it's just numb. I think it’s more likely that the nerve is pinched at the wrist of the little finger. I hope it can be resolved without surgery.

Is this the infamous "Emacs pinky" (even though I use "NeoVim") I have heared so much about?

I now have rebuild my 4x Raspberry Pi 4 cluster. I first installed Raspberry Pi OS "bookworm" and upgraded it to "trixie" on the bare, unmodified bookworm install. This went without problems. I had some troubles setting up the VLAN for the Incus nodes with NetworkManager so I went to the "ifupdown" and "vlan" packages. During the network setup I locked myself out multiple times, so I had to mount the SSDs on my laptop and edit the files (/etc/network/interfaces) from there to get back in. It was a hassle!

Then I installed Incus from its repository at zabbly and the cluster setup was no problem. I use macvlans to put my containers on a separate VLAN, which is really easy.

I just hope, Debian (Raspberry Pi OS) won't drop the "ifupdown" and "vlan" pkg methods in future releases, so I can upgrade without big changes, because I couldn't get the VLANs to work with NetworkManager (because lack of experience).

I tried to upgrade my 4x Raspberry Pi Incus Cluster nodes to Raspberry Pi OS "Trixie" before the official release and broke my whole Cluster in the process. :(

Now I wait for the official Trixie release of Raspberry Pi OS and will have to rebuild the whole cluster again. I hope it will be at least a little fun to rebuild it and not just *work*.

Sometimes I do stupid things.

The BGH (Germanys Federal Supreme Court) has revived the case if ad blockers infringe copyright or something. The case was initiated originately by the anti-social "Axel Springer Verlag". This could finally end in a ban of ad blockers in Germany (like China). That would also mean DNSBL would be illegal and we have no control to which servers our computers connect.

This is nuts!!! Like chatcontrol this is a massive attack on user privacy! Not the people should fear the government, the government should fear the people!

I just updated my gopher server "gophernicus-3.0.1" from the FreeBSD pkgs to the actual version 3.1.1 from github. gophernicus does not have a maintainer for FreeBSD anymore so you have to compile it yourself, if you want the recent version. 3.1.1 is from Jan 3, 2021. So it's the newest release but also over 4 years old, but the maintainers of the Github repo warn about using the master branch. The last commit was 8 month ago. Dunno when they tag a new release (if ever).

Would be cool, if a FreeBSD maintainer decides to take care of gophernicus again.

But this is another warning sign. I cleared the raidz and lets see how the next scrub goes. But I guess it's time to order another spare drive just in case. Maybe I need to replace *all* drives one after the other now :(

I use 4x Seagate IronWolf 4TB NAS drives, but unfortunately they seem not to be as reliable as I thought.

The myth that “email is becoming a duopoly and banning all the indie ESPs” is wrong. The trend is going in the opposite direction thanks to SPF, DKIM, and DMARC as a new way of building trust. Email has become pretty wonderful actually.♥︎

Yes, thanks saying this. I try to promote having your own email server where I can, too! With my move to the "mox" email suite I don't have any problems sending email to Gmail anymore, except if I'm signing or encrypting the email with GnuPG. Gmail doesn't want to support GnuPG/OpenPGP, so they can read your email. So also if you can send email to Gmail, eff google anyway.

I had my doubts that the GrapheneOS devs could build a comletely functioning Android 16 of GrapheneOS because of the changes Google made with their AOSP source code distribution. But here I am: My Pixel 8a runs GrapheneOS Android 16 :). And it seems that everything works, especially the "Hotspot" functionality, which I need most.

Big thanks to the GrapheneOS developers!

RE: @fab@redterminal.org 2025-07-03 14:53 +0200

ZFS resilvering went through without any errors. A scrub after the resilvering was without errors too, so I think everything is fine now. Hopefully the raidz1 continues to function for a while now. I've never thought that the pool could have a HDD failure so soon, because it's not *that* old and had brand new HDDs in it.

2025-07-03 14:53 +0200

Had a harddisk failure in my raidz1. One disk crashed, so it was in degraded mode. Luckily I have a spare IronWolf 4TB (like the others). Unfortunately the HDDs get very hot, I'm not sure why.

Now I'm in the process of resilvering the spare HDD. It has to run for further 5 hours now, and I hope none of the other HDDs breaks during the process. I have an external offline backup still, but then I have to replace the whole raidz I bet. So wish me luck.

I bought a new PixelPhone 8a and put Graphene OS on it the same day it arrived. That was in April.

In May Google announced to completely change the releases of ASOP which make it nearly impossible to build Graphene OS which chose the Pixel because it was published with the full device tree for them in ASOP as reference.

I especially bought a newer Version of the Pixel (and therefore more expensive), because it should be supported until May 2030. I'm not sure if this is possible now. In any case it will be a lot more work to build a ROM like Graphene OS if possible at all.

Eff google 🖕.

Experts say that Putin will test the borders of the European Union between 2028 and 2030. I believe the EU should build a massive nuclear arsenal. And if a Russian soldier sets even one foot on the European border, it should result in the immediate nuclear annihilation of Russia.

We should carry out a few nuclear bomb tests beforehand to demonstrate our resolve to Russia. I would rather die than live under Russian conditions! We know how it is, we’ve been through it before, even though I live and grew up in West Germany. The EU just needs to finally grow a pair of balls.

Why did it take so long to declare the german AfD as "gesichert rechtsextreme Vereinigung" (sure right-extreme association) by the Verfassungsschutz (german institution to protect the constitution)?

On the other hand, I don't know if it's such a good idea to ban the AfD as (still) the third strongest force. I don't want them to win the next elections (which could happen), but a ban could backfire. It's far too late. Not that we would end up in a civil war with these Nazis. I would bet most of the core of the AfD is (illegaly) armed. And I bet that most of the police forces votes for the AfD because they'll get more rights over the population by them. :(

@fab@redterminal.org, @bacardi55
what are your thoughts on adding Station and BBS logs to the overall subs list? I added a few, but if we're encompassing all tinylogs, every user and subspace have their own tinylogs, and this can be added. This is effectively recreating those spaces...so I'm not sure.

I think if somebody wants to add BBS or Station tinylogs he can do so. But to generally put them in the "official" list is not that good, because you can't directly answer to them through your own tinylog. If you do it anyway, it mostly won't be read by the original authors. You have to answer through the link provided by the Station or BBS entry, and the answer won't show up in the aggregation of logs (GTL or @bacardi55's aggregator).

RE: @gritty@gemini.smallweb.space 2025-04-22 22:37 +0000

I never got into that smartphone hype. I only use my smartphone for banking (which is mandatory and I hate them for that), as a hotspot and for calling. And sometimes I take a photo, that's it. Maybe I'm too old for doomscolling ;), but I know most of the younger people use their smartphones extensively.

And I personally like GTL although I'm patching it myself for a number of weeks to keep it working. I send in all the patches but they're still only proposals. @bacardi55 wants to completely rewrite the TUI, which I don't think is necessary, but if it works as good as (the patched) GTL then I don't have a problem with that.

But I won't count on getting a tinylog client for Android or iOS, so better check all the tinylogs with GTL from time to time :)

I had a strange intense dream last night, where I was on a party in an old bilding ripe for demolition, but in reality it was a personality test from an obscure corporation who wanted to hire some of us party guests, and they checked us for being ruthless enough to exploit the population. There were a lot of drinks (I'm shaking when I think about it) and everything was allowed. We were treated like superintelligent and brilliant people, when they outed it as a test and did some further testing while we knew that's a test. I was pretty bad at math (of course only because I drank so much) and before I knew if I was taken as an apprentice I woke up in sweat.

Not sure what this all means aside from being 50 years old and being much too old to go on parties with only young people. Very strange...

Of course, my first tinylog entry for this tinylog "rebirth" is about… Tinylogs!
I've finaly updated the RFC, more detailed on the dedicated gemlog:

I also asked this on the Codeberg Issue Tracker but I want to put it here as well:

I don't understand why blank lines are forbidden in a tinylog entry now, except at the end. They're needed to to better structure the entry and they're used by nearly everybody. I think `^## ` is enough to separate an entry from another.

2025-04-16 14:23 +0200

I updated the tinylogs subscription list and added a "@" to each author name, as it's now mandatory by the gemini-tinylog-rfc.

I've redone two of my fingers on my finger server, which were completely broken. "gemlog", which returns my latest gemlog entry, was rewritten in Go (of course) and I had to reimplement the "feed" finger, which returns my latest Mastodon/ActivityPub posts. It is written in Python (I hate it) and had some credential issues, which I had to fix. Maybe I'll rewrite it with Go some time in the future, too.

Sorry for the late reply; it was already my bedtime at that time. I think that the fact that I live in a place using daylight savings offset isn’t really easy on my end…

Now you finally got it right. Maybe you should use a program like GTL, but you should wait until the open patches are merged. It should make the things easier. Just use the following date format string in your gtl.toml configuration file:

date_format = "2006-01-02 15:04 -0700"

Then your computer should create the right dates also for replies. It also adds the link to the tinylog you are replying to. But I don't know when @bacardi55 will merge the patches, it could take a while.

idk how to mitigate the active non-English Tinylog users… A separate subscription list?

You can sort them out by putting a "#" infront of the URLs of tinylogs you don't want to see.

BTW: Something seems to be wrong with your timezone offset. Some of your posts are in the future.

There seems to be a lot of movement going on in the Gemini space. Tinylogs and GTL getting some special attention. Feels like I'm coming in at a good time. Just reading through fab's and bacardi55's threads is helping me understand the pieces a little better.

Finnally you made it. Sorry for the trouble with the timezones. I've never had such thing seen in the tinylogs. I had to investigate all this myself for the first time.

So it seems, some timezones which have daylight saving times (not all though), don't work with tinylogs, so you have to set the offset (eg. "+1200" in your case).

I hope you aren't angry for the trouble.

Tinylog todo list - brain dump

I posted a reply with some propsals for the tinylog RFC:

Re: Tinylog todo list - brain dump

2025-04-08 04:43 +0200

You may have noticed a lot of hits on your tinylogs by one IP the last night. That was because I was testing a patch for GTL which should display only the description of a link when available, otherwise it shows the URL. Sorry for that. With this patch it's also possible to view threads with links in the RE: line, like described in the tinylog spec. There are several new patches for GTL. I hope @bacardi55 will merge them soon.

2025-04-07 09:02 +0200

Because of the stubbornness of some people not to add an "author:" metadata tag to their tinylog, I manually added a name to every URL in the tinylog list, which is used in case no "author:" field was found. I did what I could to get the name extracted from what I'm seeing in the URLs. If you don't like the name I've chosen for you, add an "author:" field to your tinylog. I hate seeing these annoying "Anonymous_XX" names in GTL.

Hi fab! Okay three things:

1. Please use YYYY-MM-DD format as per the spec.
2. Metadata like “Author” is optional!
3. You linked to tinylog-subscriptions.text but it’s tinylog-subscriptions.txt

Hello Sandra!

1. Fixed!

2. But it's nice to have! Look who wrote the post I'm replying to. Should really be mandatory. "avatar:" and "license:" can be optional.

3. Fixed!

Thanks for making me aware of these things.

I just added my old laptop as another Proxmox node, so now I have a Proxmox cluster! It has 8 cores, 16 threads and 32GB RAM. And it doesn't use much power as a laptop. It makes a great addition to my homelab. Before that I only had my ThinkCentre M900 Tiny with 4C/8T and 32 GB.

I can migrate my containers and VMs between the nodes seamlessly. I also set up a shared folder on my 4 disk raidz for backups on both of them so all the backups go to the same folder on my ZFS NAS and I can send snapshots (with all the other stuff on my NAS) to my offline backup disk.

2025-03-31 12:31 +0200

I've just implemented Gemini Mentions on my Capsule with a Go program compiled for my FreeBSD machine. Works great as far as I've tested it.

I'm not sure if I should publish it, because you have to alter the source code to make it compatible with your capsule. Maybe I'll add some config file code to make it accessible for other users. But I'm not sure where to place the config file, maybe in the ~/.config/ dir of the user running the script. That has to be hardcoded because you can't give commandline arguments to a gemini script.

Another thing is, that my gmid capsule runs in a chroot, so I don't know if I've even access to the home directory :(

Any suggestions or advises?

2025-03-30 05:39 +0200

My list of Tinylogs now contains 72 URL entries. Some are outdated and some are non-english. And some don't follow the Tinylog spec correctly and don't have an "author:" metadata line below the Title and description; that makes them show up as Anonymous_XX in GTL, which makes it difficult to follow and reply. You can download the list here:

I'll try to keep this list as up-to-date as possible. Unreachable Tinylogs are sorted out by GTL. So keep an eye on the list.

I switched from PFSense CE (2.7.2) to OPNSense (25.1.3) on my main router, because it seems that Netgate has let it go if you look at the roadmap (47 Tickets open for a very long time). The last update was around January 2024.

But to my luck, *now* they'll start working on these tickets and bring out a new release soon.

But I don't regret the switch anyway, also if pfSense brings out it's new version soon. OPNSense brings out updates *regularly*, in contrast to pfSense CE.

Recent #showerthought. I find it interesting that most of us express ourselves on the internet in hopes that a person we don't know, will likely never meet, and doesn't live anywhere near us, will find it useful or entertaining. You can say you don't care if anyone reads it, but then, why write on the internet at all - just write in a paper journal.

Yes, you're right! I still hope that at least *somebody* reads my post and finds it interesting. And *sometimes* I get an email with an answer to my post, which makes me happy. So, I *do* care that at least a few people read what I'm writing and hopefully find it interesting. But I don't have high expectations, but I like the quietness and slowness of the smallweb, even if it's a niche protocol and if I wanted to write for a wider audience I would use a full blown weblog.

BTW: I'm testing the "reply" function of my gtl tinylog reader :)

Visited the doctor today due to high blood pressure concerns. Underwent a comprehensive examination program consisting of an electrocardiogram and a blood draw, but no medications were prescribed yet. Awaiting lab results for my sample analysis, I should keep measuring my blood pressure, and in three days I will return to discuss potential treatment options. It is likely that she will recommend a well-tolerated medication to lower my blood pressure at this time. The ECG findings were within normal limits, indicating no cardiac issues. My lungs are now clear (a positive result from quitting smoking and transitioning to vaping approximately a year ago), so no respiratory problems exist. However, the problem is *drumroll* I'm too fat and have no excercise.

I got a little nervous, because at the first greeting after the ECG she said "This time I need to take a little more time on you.", with a very soft and calming voice not to upset me. Maybe she has some very bad news for me I thought.

But I'm calm now because this can be handled good with some medication. Lucky me!

2025-01-17 18:09 +0100

Bought a bloodpressure measurement tool today, because my mom (72 years) thought, she might have problems.

While trying out the tool we discovered that my mother has a nearly perfect bloodpressure of 122 / 67. A little low but nothing to concern about.

Of course I wanted to test too, and was a little shocked! I had 167 / 89 (I get 50 years old this year)! Much too high even before the WHO lowered the limit for high blood pressure to sell more pills. I'm very bad on my feet, overweight and don't get much exercise.

So I decided to go to the doctor tomorrow to see what I can do. I know I can get a heart attack or a stroke and my life expectancy is lowered a lot by a high blood pressure.

Wish me luck!

After spending the past 1.5 months intensively working with Emacs, I am now switching back full-time to NeoVim. Emacs is simply too slow and cumbersome for me, even though it has many great features like OrgMode, Elpher, mu4e, etc. But my long-term experience with Vim is just simpler for me. For example, I haven't figured out how to use Emacs in an AwesomeWM Scratchpad. Additionally, I can use NeoVim with NeoMutt and tut (TUI Mastodon Client) as an editor. In my workflow, a TUI/CLI editor simply has more advantages for me.

They showed up as normal on my proxy web page but were turned by -90° in all the gemini browsers which also show the images by themselves. I always looked at them in the browser and don't use Lagrange so I didn't notice. I just noticed by starting to use #Elpher from #Emacs.

Ellama is a cool toy, if you don't mind to use AI (locally). You can chat with it, translate text, improve wording and grammar and some other things. It's fun.

Right now I'm learning to use Org-Roam, and check if it can replace my VimWiki.

Older or not internet savvy people will have a lot of difficulties to object or won't be able to at all. And in my opinion such sensitive data should not be digitally collected and has only drawbacks for the patient. I strongly advise to object!

They are already planning a digital "anonymous" (pseudonymous?) data pool of all patient data nationwide for research purposes here in Germany. Of course it is "absolutely secure" and there will be "no way to abuse" the data, as they're marketing it. I'm no data expert but I've the strong opinion, that the data can be easily reassembled to a real person. F*** them! #privacy

Someone is trying to bruteforce my mail account for <fab@redterminal.org>. The guesses are always from different IPv4 addresses, so he's not banned by fail2ban. He tries every 5 - 10 minutes and then a pause of one hour. Good luck! :)

Yesterday I ripped the complete TV show of "Columbo" (DVD) and put it on my NAS server, so I can watch all the episodes without changing disks. Of course this is just a backup and I bought the DVD set online. Another TV show for my old TV shows collection :)

I just read an article on Robert Birming's blog:

Overcoming Self-Doubt

And he's perfectly right. I'm a mediocre writer myself. But I try to get better by more writing, although sometimes I take breaks from my computer activities which I mostly write about. Also my english language isn't that great (I'm german).

Another thing is, you don't have to be a professional writer to write a blog/gemlog/phlog. I think the more people start to write in the smolnet/indieweb the better. It's more the meaning than the words.

I just made an account on indieweb.org and added my page to the sites which support webmentions through webmention.io, which is really easy.

At the moment I'm not sure how to expand my site further and what to add next. But surely there will be some ideas for the future.

Updated my FreeBSD Server for the web, gopher, gemini and finger to FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE. Upgrade went smooth as always.

Not doing much of anything. Taking a break from my computer activities. Just reading a blog/phlog/gemlog here and there and enjoying my retirement. Let's see how long this period takes this time. 1 Week? 2 Weeks? A month? Of course it doesn't matter. It's the slow web of course for a reason!

After 33 years of excessive smoking I today celebrate the 4th month without even one cigarette! 🎉 🎉 🎉

My site now supports webmentions. I won't publish them anywhere at least for now but it's another step towards IndyWeb.

I posted a new gopher phlog post in my brand new gopher hole:

My new SmolNet TUI client of choice: "telescope" by Omar Polo.

It supports Gemini, Finger and Gopher and is very lean/fast.

I added a phlog to my gopherhole. There is only one post for now but I have to start somewhere. Here are the links:

Link to the RSS feed for the posts

I also set up a gopherhole on my server. There's not much to see on it for now and I'm still not sure what to put on it. But as a smolnet enthusiast it's a good supplement to my online home.

If you have any comments or suggestions drop me a line.

I modified the gemlog.sh script to generate an atom feed with web links to the gemlog entries besides the one with gemini links. My gemlog can now be read with a normal rss reader without gemini support.

Figuring out Matrix Chat. To make my life harder, I'm of course using the TUI client "gomuks". The whole encryption thing seems a little bit complicated and the version packaged with FreeBSD (0.3.0_6) is a little bit buggy.

I already found my way to the #geminiprotocol:matrix.org room. A lot of people hanging out there. On the same time it seems a low frequency room - I like that!

For the people who still thought that "Web Environment Integrity" is just a proposal and still not officially approved, WEI has already found its way into Chromium:

It seems Red Hat (IBM) goes after Alma Linux and Rocky Linux with a new decision to restrict access to the RHEL sources - which makes it difficult for Alma and Rocky to keep up with their binary compatible distros. Like they killed CentOS which was the most used OS on internet servers. Alma and Rocky told users not to "panic" because they are certain to resolve the issues, but we'll see what impact this has on RHEL clones this time.

Haven't made an update to my gemini site in a while. It's hard to think about some topic to write about. I recently have digged a little into Nix and NixOS but I think this is a huge topic to cover if I want to write about it. I also finally found my way to bbs.geminispace.org. I am sceptical if I'll use bubble in the long turn. On the other hand it's a lot of fun :)

After decades of using Linux I finally check out Emacs for the first time - what a rabbit hole. But it's fun to learn some new concepts and OrgMode is really amazing. There is sooo much stuff. At the moment I'm learning to build up my configs from scratch with vanilla emacs (but I installed evil mode) from this tutorial:

Emacs From Scratch (Youtube playlist)

I always thought Emacs is kinda overkill (some people saying it's an OS on top of Linux) without knowing anything! I'll try to develop a complete working environment before I decide if I stay in Emacs or go back to neovim. I'm really fascinated.

It's a cold, rainy and dark saturday. A good day to stay in my warm and cosy bed with some X-Files episodes - and leave the heating off to save some money.

I'm working on a terminal client to query ChatGPT in python. It's in pre-alpha and I just uploaded it. I'm not sure if python is the right language, but I wanted to get a Mock-up quickly. I plan to add editable configurations, a session system and predefined prompts later. It's nothing spectacular but you can already tinker with it, if you like.

NeoVim is the greatest editor I've ever used. Today I switched from Coc to LSP as IDE tool and added the telescope plugin, which is excellent for fuzzy finding in files. A fantastic piece of software. I like it!

YAY! After the Verdi strike is over, finally my new gaming PC rig arrived. Just need to get rid of Windows 11 and install Arch Linux and steam and then have a lot of fun! 😃

Look! I now have a tinylog! I just implemented it out of curiosity. Not sure, if I post regularly - but now that I've discovered bacardi55's gtl I have an easy way to follow other people's tinylogs.
