00:14 DaemonFC; Someone got on Walmart, hacked into some lady's account, and ordered a bunch of shit.
00:15 DaemonFC; I called Walmart and asked if there was anything shipping to my address, this was on Tuesday (after some woman from a private number called me and complained that someone was ordering things to my house).
00:15 DaemonFC; Walmart told me nothing was coming.
00:15 DaemonFC; Yesterday, I got a package, and it was an inflatable pool toy. Today I got a package, and it was a 100 pound TV stand.
00:16 DaemonFC; I keep calling to complain. The police won't take a report from me about what's going on. FedEx won't take the item back unless I pay the return shipping. Walmart the store says "Not our problem. Call Walmart.com". Walmart.com says to just keep it or donate it and that the woman who was defrauded will have to work this out with her bank, but they won't pay to have the items returned.
00:17 DaemonFC; It's pretty clear that I was never supposed to know this was going on. They figured they'd wait and snatch them off my doorstep and if the police showed up, they'd be here questioning me.
00:18 DaemonFC; <immibis> DaemonFC claims democrat-run cities have failed. I say, if they have failed then why the fuck are people willing to pay $2,500 per month to move there?
00:19 DaemonFC; Once they get the green light to work from home, they move to a red state and then their boss goes "Hey, wait a minute! We're paying you a higher salary so you can deal with the bullshit cost of living in Chicago!".
00:19 matey; if they have failed then why the fuck are people willing to pay $2,500 per month to move there? <- because aquaman defaulted on the home loan
00:20 DaemonFC; "Come back here! How will we support the decision to have an army of middle managers, a $4,000 coffee machine, and office space in the Sears Tower if you're in West Virginia enjoying wide open spaces, no crime, clean air, and low rent?".
00:20 matey; loved the video
00:23 matey; presumably some parts are undergoing gentrification while others are simply becoming a shithole
00:23 matey; daemonfc: if you could live anywhere, where would you go?
00:24 matey; lets assume that an armed base on the moon is an option
00:25 matey; if you're in West Virginia enjoying <- already that does not sound like west virginia

01:08 DaemonFC; Sorry, I went to the police station.
01:08 DaemonFC; Had them write out a report on this.
01:09 Snap[$]; your full of shit
01:09 DaemonFC; I live down the street from them.
01:10 DaemonFC; I just wanted to be on the record saying what exactly happened.
01:10 DaemonFC; In case anyone files a complaint later, so it doesn't look like all of these packages from Walmart got dumped in here and I never said anything about it.
01:11 DaemonFC; I told them that Walmart says they can't take it, Walmart.com told me to keep them or donate them or throw them away and it's between their customer and her bank, about the lady that called me from the private number, and so on.
01:11 Snap[$]; how much did you pay?
01:11 DaemonFC; Nothing.
01:11 DaemonFC; They ordered an inflatable pool toy and a TV stand.
01:12 DaemonFC; It's like maybe $160 worth of stuff.
01:12 DaemonFC; $150 TV stand and a $10 pool toy.
01:12 Snap[$]; so what prevents people just flodding the police with reports?
01:12 DaemonFC; Well, if you go down there and talk to them and ask them to give you a report number, they'll take a report.
01:12 DaemonFC; But normally they don't take reports over the phone.
01:13 Snap[$]; so its just like linux tick system
01:13 Snap[$]; ticket
01:13 DaemonFC; If they have to, they'll give you a report number.
01:14 DaemonFC; It's just that usually people don't want one unless they've suffered an insurable loss.
01:14 DaemonFC; Most likely what will happen is she'll file a chargeback with her bank, who will give her the money.
01:14 DaemonFC; So she won't care.
01:14 DaemonFC; Then the bank will take the money from Walmart.
01:14 DaemonFC; So her bank won't care.
01:15 DaemonFC; Then Walmart already told me that they locked her account and forced her to secure it.
01:15 DaemonFC; I told them they should force everyone onto 2FA in the first place because then you couldn't make your password "password123".
01:15 DaemonFC; Shitty e-commerce site. They must not really care about fraud.
01:15 Snap[$]; was that your password?
01:16 DaemonFC; I don't have a password on my Walmart account.
01:16 DaemonFC; They send me a one time code to my phone instead.
01:16 DaemonFC; It's like 8 digits and it only works for 1 minute and then it expires.
01:16 Snap[$]; so how did you get robed?
01:16 DaemonFC; And you have to generate a new one.
01:17 DaemonFC; I didn't.
01:17 DaemonFC; Someone shipped the package to me with the intent to run off with it.
01:17 Snap[$]; but you got the package?
01:17 DaemonFC; Yeah.
01:17 DaemonFC; What was I supposed to do? Leave it out there so they'd succeed and do it again?
01:18 Snap[$]; so how the the rober got your 8 digit code?
01:18 DaemonFC; They didn't.
01:18 DaemonFC; They got my name and address and put it on her account.
01:18 DaemonFC; Then they placed an order with her account and shipped it to me.
01:19 DaemonFC; I think Walmart did manage to stop one of the items.
01:19 Snap[$]; so she validate the purchase with her 8 digit code?
01:19 DaemonFC; Because she told me there were three items.
01:19 DaemonFC; I just don't remember what the next one is supposed to be.
01:19 DaemonFC; Snap[$], Probably she uses an iPhone and couldn't spell 2FA.
01:20 DaemonFC; That is how The Fappening happened.
01:20 Snap[$]; so iphones are less secure?
01:20 DaemonFC; They have a really shitty security mechanism.
01:20 DaemonFC; The only software allowed to run is from the App Store.
01:21 DaemonFC; Yet, Apple doesn't have a human read the source code.
01:21 DaemonFC; So malware has made it into the App Store, and there is no defense-in-depth.
01:21 DaemonFC; So once it gets on the phone somehow (security hole or App Store) it can do whatever it wants on the phone.
01:21 Snap[$]; they have access to the source code?
01:22 DaemonFC; Usually. They run a binary through an automated system that sees if it does anything suspicious and flags it for further review.
01:23 Snap[$]; so they dont
01:23 DaemonFC; If it gets stuck in further review, often the developer doesn't hear anything from Apple for months.
01:23 DaemonFC; Then it either gets accepted or rejected.
01:23 DaemonFC; They do, but they don't want to allocate manpower to inspecting source code.
01:23 DaemonFC; So unless their smoke testing uncovers something suspicious, they usually look no further into it.
01:24 DaemonFC; Which makes it easy to slip in dormant code that does nothing while it's being tested, and then activates later, after it's in the store.
01:26 Snap[$]; friday 13?
01:26 DaemonFC; Epic really embarrassed Apple with that.
01:27 DaemonFC; They not only sneaked in dormant code that Apple missed, it was an entire competing payment system.
01:28 DaemonFC; The Play Store on Android is the official store, has had a lot of malware incidents, including banking trojans.
01:28 DaemonFC; F-Droid is operated by volunteers, open source software only. I'm not aware of any malware making it in. It also has reproducible builds.

15:39 schestowitz; hence we create an index as gemtext with all the code in it, as raw
15:39 bnchs__; well

22:01 SomeH4x0r; my parents think I'm going to become a "successful" programmer. Just two brainwashed individuals.
22:02 SomeH4x0r; I don't actually have motivation for anything, they thought about programming just because I was using my computer all the time, for typical (or a bit not) user activities

23:08 matey; i can think of a few

23:10 matey; youd rather move on from the thing about kuhn?

23:11 schestowitz-TR; I mean, the similarity
23:11 matey; but when they started attacking him
23:11 schestowitz-TR; never mind the acronym
23:11 matey; kuhn basically ripped off sflc, which he used to work for
23:11 matey; he had similar issues with the fsf
23:11 matey; and when taken to task for it, he joined a lynch mob against rms
23:11 schestowitz-TR; today I published an RMS talk from 5 years ago
23:11 matey; yeah i saw it
23:12 schestowitz-TR; in min 1-2 IIRC he mentioned moglen
23:12 schestowitz-TR; gives him tons of credit for the movement
23:12 matey; moglen is the coauthor of the gpl
23:12 matey; at least gpl3 but i think with the original gpl rms was the author and moglen just finessed it a bit

23:13 matey; problematic is kuhns favourite word

23:52 matey; its still github
23:52 schestowitz; yes, but not a new issue
23:52 schestowitz; "Efraim has demonstrated traits we value for a co-maintainer, such as good communication and collaboration abilities, values that align well with those of the GNU project and overall a person you'd like to hang out with at FOSDEM :-)."
23:52 schestowitz; I know nothing about him
23:52 matey; Efraim has demonstrated traits <- good to know, ill look into him
23:53 schestowitz; https://ci.guix.gnu.org/jobset/guix-master
23:53 TR Bot; guix-master
23:53 matey; of course gnome did the same thing
23:53 schestowitz; in-house CI
23:53 matey; and gnome always comes back for another backstab later
23:53 matey; no matter how many people step down
23:53 schestowitz; btw, mcgovern out
23:53 schestowitz; bully db out
23:53 matey; yeah i know
23:53 schestowitz; and their OSI sidekick
23:53 matey; and ballmer is gone from microsoft
23:53 schestowitz; carlo et al are chained by microsoft
23:53 matey; the angle i look at it from was this
23:54 schestowitz; and his friend stefanpo
23:54 matey; when neil and molly used gnome to attack free software
23:54 schestowitz; they are orgs in disarray
23:54 matey; the organisations did nothing
23:54 schestowitz; miles worse than fsf after the... aftermath
23:54 matey; when the worst leaders and traitors stepped down
23:54 matey; they quietly went back to business as usual
23:54 schestowitz; they are like russian tanks
23:54 matey; thats not good enough
23:54 schestowitz; fsf is kiev
23:54 schestowitz; and microsoft is pution
23:54 schestowitz; sending in armored vehicles and tanks
23:54 schestowitz; only to go up in flames
23:55 schestowitz; the metaphor involved dealth violence
23:55 schestowitz; so I would not 'meme' it
23:55 matey; gnome will never stop attacking us-- they even attack other free software projects
23:55 schestowitz; "the putin" (microsoft) thought it would be a quick triumph over fsf
23:55 matey; completely unrelated to neil and molly, theyre just really bad
23:55 schestowitz; and underestimated the pushback
23:55 schestowitz; ibm is in it too
23:56 schestowitz; and gulag of course
23:56 schestowitz; people are NOT dumb enough
23:56 matey; roy you write about reputation washing, greenwashing, openwashing
23:56 schestowitz; their lies-filled letter backfired
23:56 matey; this is resignationwashing
23:56 schestowitz; and said NOTHING about the real issues
23:56 schestowitz; matey: yes, that too
23:56 schestowitz; resignationwashing\
23:56 schestowitz; I like that
23:56 matey; what if kuhn steps down from sfc?
23:56 schestowitz; miguel de icazas is a recent one
23:56 schestowitz; 49 year old
23:56 schestowitz; to "spend time with family"
23:57 schestowitz; piff off
23:57 schestowitz; his kid is like 12 and goes to school
23:57 schestowitz; what's miguel going to do all day? eat cheetos?
23:57 matey; with his family
23:57 matey; little britain had a running sketch with a disgraced politician who kept giving speeches about spending more time with family
23:57 schestowitz; kuhn is one of two
23:57 matey; its such a cliche
23:58 matey; yeah and sandler
23:58 schestowitz; his brooklyn area sidekick has not much face-saving
23:58 schestowitz; except the "not being male" thing
23:58 matey; might as well throw in deb too
23:58 DaemonFC; If you resign you get a bigger severance package.
23:58 schestowitz; though I like her talks
23:58 DaemonFC; If we fire you, well....
23:58 schestowitz; DaemonFC: usually the opposite
23:58 schestowitz; so you try hard to compel them to fire you
23:58 matey; hitler turned nasty before his rise to power
23:58 schestowitz; and then pay compensation
23:58 schestowitz; depends wherew
23:59 matey; stalin turned nasty WITH his rise to power
23:59 matey; gradually
23:59 matey; as a result of it
23:59 matey; he wasnt a great guy to start with
23:59 schestowitz; linus is camera-shy
23:59 matey; but he wasnt a monster
23:59 *RaZeR (~2d99a002@54n9xgft8g6u2.irc) has joined #techrights
23:59 schestowitz; I will give you a chalolenge
23:59 schestowitz; find me the last time mtorvalds did a full interview with the press
23:59 schestowitz; I can barely think of us
23:59 schestowitz; not just answering one question over emil
23:59 matey; but the government became more important than its own purpose
23:59 schestowitz; but a full, proper interview
