@stack I'm mostly thinking of my e-ink monochrome display, but generally it would be nice to support clients which ignore the escape codes. I'd go for reasonably unobtrusive characters next to the letters to indicate correctness, say '.' and '|'. If you think that's too ugly, it could be an option (which could also disable ANSI codes entirely).

you could combine this idea with the "circled alphanumeric" that you are kind of using for 'eleven', and maybe come up with something that can be colored or not, depending on user preference (have a link for color and another for b/w, maybe?)

It seems to a pretty good job without color.
I don't think I need to rewrite it. Mine has colors.
@mbays, let me know how it looks in monochrome, and I could probably adjust the colors so it works for everyone.
@stack The client just strips ANSI. But don't worry, the spool5 implementation is indeed fine.
