anyone know some good software for drawing ANSI art? I've been meaning to get into it, it seems so very interesting. — on another note, I recently came across this very nice, lightweight (1.5MB with all fonts installed) ASCII art program written in Java called "JavE" that redefines the traditional text-editor interface in favor of something more mouse-focused, acting more like any other "regular" art program. I haven't made anything with it yet, but it's been super fun to play around with. It...
I now have a different concern. How do you display ANSI art on gemini? I tried looking at various examples, including astrobotany's colorized ASCII art and I am completely dumbfounded as to why when I paste ANSI text into pre-formatted lines it just, doesn't work. I even tried copy-pasting astrobotany's source into my own gemini capsule, and the colored art simply doesn't display. It shows the escape codes but really, nothing else. I can't find anything about this. Any help would be heavily...
Maze of MURDERS — I just finished programming an ASCII art Gemini multiplayer game. It's called "Maze of MURDERS." Give it a try and send any feedback you have. Thanks! The URL is [gemini link]
New Unicode chars for “Legacy computing!” — The Unicode Consortium just published a new set of Unicode characters and I am so incredibly excited — they are basically all for Terminals and ASCII art and game sprite and stuff! They are specifically designed for retrocomputing. Amazing new little sprites (love the little racecars); large circle drawing characters; LOADS of new block characters for ASCII art; outlined letters, chess characters… This is excellent.
making ascii art for beginners? — what's the best way to learn to make ascii art? is there a good walkthrough tutorial out therw? i've been using stuff i find online for my gemlog but want to start making originals but don't know where to start. thanks for any tips ;)
Mermaid graphs rendered to ascii — Pretty cool really. A little go script to convert Mermaid markup to ASCII art. It can be even called via curl: [preformatted]
[amiga] blue dress — Here's another amiga piece that I made. I'm kind of bummed I can't post these here as plaintext because of the font/color requirements. But on the other hand, it's more comfortable knowing I having full control over how the picture will be seen.
[amiga] dancer — This is my first pic using the amiga ascii art font & character set. Amiga is a popular category in the underground BBS art scene. It's interesting (to me) for a couple of reasons. The amiga charset is essentially latin-1, so you get access to "extended-ascii" characters like (¯), (°), and (²). These high characters are sorely lacking in 7-bit ascii and are helpful for drawing interesting curves and such. There are no block-drawing characters (like (░), (█), so amiga art is...
Request. I am making a dice game but can't find any ASCII dice that I like. has anyone come across just the 6 square faces of a die that looks okay? I want to stack them 3 wide on the screen, so nothing huge. I made my own but they are...not good.

New ASCII banner for my capsule — [preformatted] Can someone point me toward the right direction so that I can mix ANSI colours with ASCII art? 🙏
A script to generate Chafa galleries for gmi — Hey! I can only take credit for the idea, but I am sharing a little script cobbled together with artificial help that generates a little .gmi ANSI gallery out of images in a directory. An example: $ ls something.jpeg something_else.jpeg testing.jpeg another.jpeg somefile.jpeg $ ./chafa-gmi-gallery-gen.sh Enter gallery name or leave blank to use...

Magic Gopher — This one was fun to make! I spent a lot of time playing with different variations of the glitter trail behind the wand, and landed on something very minimal. I generated the reference image using DALL-E with the following prompt: Illustration of a charming gopher dressed in a pink tutu, gracefully twirling on her toes. She holds a sparkling magic wand in her paw and waves it in the air. Admittedly it came out looking more like a chipmunk than a gopher, but that's alright since...
Dark Silk - Taiwan BBS ANSI art — I've recently been sucked into the world of Taiwan BBS ANSI art. This is a largely independent scene from its western counterpart, and grew out of BBS servers that are still used today in Taiwan (search "PTT Bulletin Board"). There are very few english resources on the subject so I've been leaning heavily on translation tools. The language barrier is rough though. The Taiwan/Chinese style is very unique because it mixes block-drawing characters (aka ANSI art)...
Is Unicode art a thing? Is it hard to know that a viewer will have all Unicode fonts installed?

Shadow Wolf Cyberzine — If you're on gemini, there's a 100% probability you will think this is cool.
I created Patate, it is an ascii art editor for the terminal (linux). [gemini link]
Fungi - Simple Organisms — This page is a fun art collab from a handful of modern ASCII & PETSCII artists. I copy-pasted some of the pictures below as a preview. The originals are in full color with a custom font, so check out the geocities link to get the full experience! [preformatted] [preformatted] [preformatted]

Surf the Internet — It's a thing of beauty. [preformatted] (bonus, the original drawing is a 3d stereogram where you're supposed to cross your eyes to see it properly) [preformatted]
What tools do you use? — I've been looking for a simple ASCII art editor for linux, open source, preferrably written in C (and definitely not Python or anything that pulls in random libraries and will stop working one day for no explainable reason) . Minimum requirements are: position the cursor anywhere, enter weird characters easily. Draw boxes and lines in various directions. Also, cut and paste as lines or boxes. I haven't found such a thing. There is a proliferation of online crap, but I...
Maybe not strictly art, but nevertheless an interesting approach to text-only graphics for people using a Mac (like me): the new app called monodraw lets you create graphics made of text. I’ll certainly try it out, and maybe this is of interest for someone here. If so, please leave a comment. [https link] Monodraw
