Moon through a telescope — It's pretty hard to shoot through the eyepiece without a mount, but I did my best.

I'm finishing up testing on a dice game closely related to farkle. Hoping to deploy this week-ish, so I'll be looking for some testers if anyone is interested.

Things I hate about living in the now part II — Getting an unknown tracker alert on my phone. Why are these legal again? I never found it and it didn't pop up again. Must have been someone in proximity to me while I was out and about. Yes, I had it play a sound and did a manual scan. Didn't hear anything and didn't pop up.

iMac 2007-2011 as retro-gaming and media centre with Batocera Linux — Where I live (Christchurch, NZ) there seems to be an incoming e-waste wave. I have managed to buy some old iMacs for next to nothing and turned them into Batocera systems. They can emulate console games up to PSX/PSP really well. The 2011 model seems to run PS2 games well as well. Batocera comes with Kodi, so I can also play DVDs for my kids as well as rip my CDs into it to manage my music collection. They still look great...

SpellBinding is moving to tilde.team — [gemini link] I was just notified by @satch that tilde.cafe may be shutting down. I had no idea, so had to scramble to move it to tilde.team. Please test it and let me know if there any issues. Today's games are identical as I cloned the system, but tomorrow, they should diverge.

Help! Spellbinding needs a new home! — Tilde.cafe had generously provided a home for Spellbinding, but they are shutting down(?) Can you spare a tiny bit of resources to host it? Spellbinding is a C-based CGI script that uses absolutely minimal resources to provide the game experience to a couple of dozen players daily. If you have a stable server and wanto to help, I and the players would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you know of a good, stable free provider with CGI, please let me know.

So I APPARENTLY needed to do things that were boring, like W O R K and that made me nearly forget about this place, but I am BACK now!!! So, look forward for more posts about nerdy things that most people don't care about! P.S. absolutely DO NOT apply capsaicin cream after taking a shower. Bleh.

More questions on gemtext parsing — I'm rewriting my gemtext parser and I've landed on questions that I decided to ignore the first time around, but now I really want to solve: 1. All lines beginning with the two characters "=>" are link lines, says the spec, but also <URL> is mandatory, so how do we handle a line that is simply "=>\r\n"? 2. What if <URL> is not a valid URL or it doesn't have reserved characters encoded? 3. Should single '\n' and '\r' characters be ignored, replaced by a...

Kenkyo: a layered keyboard layout for the rest of us. — I would like to share with the Geminispace a small project that has kept me excited over the last year: [https link] Thanks to software customisation software like keyd and kanata, we can have custom layers on any keyboard as well as other interesting tools to augment the capabilities of our keyboards.

Cloudflare Tunnels — I know very little about public-facing networking, but I came across Cloudflare tunnels as a way to expose services without compromising my home network. Is anyone using these for Gemini?

Thoughts on Kokoro, by Natsume Soseki — Since I've finished reading this book in September, I've found myself thinking back on various aspects of it time and time again, so maybe sharing these thoughts might be of some value. This is going to be more of a discussion, rather than a recommendation. I do recommend it though, especially if you like looking for subtle details and decyphering, bit by bit, a composition of someone's soul. The book is, for the most part, centered on a single person,...

Is there a way in Lagrange to export stuff like Bookmarks from desktop variant and import them into the mobile app?

🌒 s/ESP32

ESP32-CAM poor quality — I managed to compile some ESP-IDF examples for ESP32-CAM, and the image quality is atrocious. I was hoping to make a simple 'security camera', but the image is so low resolution and low quality that I doubt any faces would be recognizable. The example web server allows a lot of tweaks for the camera, but increasing the resolution and JPEG quality does not seem to improve the image - it seems to be 1990 quality image, you can actually count the pixels! I am using the...

Sleep hacking — I am going to try polyphasic sleep, after reading and watching a few videos. After the last 3-hour time-zone shift I never fully recovered a good sleep cycle. I find myself waking up at 4AM, forcing myself to go back to sleep, and waking again around 9 or 10, very tired and barely awake all day. So I think it will be a breeze to just get up and take a 20-min nap or two.

@skyjake I was browsing a couple of capsules, and this idea 💡 hit me. I’d love it if Lagrange could remember which fenced blocks I collapse, so the next time I load a site, it restores them to their previous collapsed/expanded state. I know there’s a setting to choose whether I want them collapsed or not, but that applies to all blocks on all capsules. For context, some capsules have huge ASCII art at the top. It looks nice the first few times, but after that, it just becomes annoying. That...

In my posts on Gemini so far, I've been trying to balance technical and non-technical topics. There is a heck of a lot of technical content on here, and it's nice to offset that a little. I've been posting a few things about the CGI games I've been making, but these have been interspersed with cats and doggos. Balanced, as all things should be.

Medals of Bull**** — Every president gives bull**** medals to people who don't deserve any medals, and this time is no different. So there is nothing surprising that Biden gave a medal to Hillary, a liar and a mass murderer, probably for being in charge the last four years (I am surprised Obama didn't get one too). George Soros certainly deserved a medal for all the support he provided. Of course Biden himself received one of these in 2017... It's nothing compared to Obama _receiving_ a bull****...

Strict parsing of link lines — The spec reads All lines beginning with the two characters "=>" are link lines. but also... Link lines have the following syntax =>[<whitespace>]<URL>[<whitespace><USER-FRIENDLY LINK NAME>] where <whitespace> is any non-zero number of consecutive spaces or tabs So... is a line starting with "=>" but no following whitespace a link line or not? If not, what type of line is it?

Clockless 1 — Last night I started an experiment on myself. I decided to live without a clock for a while (days?, weeks?, or even months?). So I deposed my wristwatch in a drawer and took down the clock from the kitchen wall. I deleted the clock from my desktop panel. Anyway I will also try to reduce the time I spend online. How might this change my life? Will it restrict my social life wherever punctuality counts, such as meeting friends or attending cultural events? I have no idea how long...

Today I replaced my HDDs with SSDs — A few days back, yet another HDD betrayed me and died in my VM storage pool RAID array. This pissed me off and I decided I was done with mechanical drives. So I used my credit card and bought 4 SSDs to fill up my storage bay. I spent the day: Cloning all my VMs' logical volumes at a slow rate, because one HDD was already dead and loosing another one at this point would have been catastrophic. Creating the RAID5 array and reconfiguring the iSCSI target....
