I’m glad I’m not a letsplayer because I am embarrassingly bad at some video games!

I just got back into Super Metroid Subversion after taking a few days off from it because I had zero progress after like seven or eight hours (after gettign stuck, not total. Total it’s like three or four times already I would guess). I regret looking at the map I found online because it only spoiled a bunch of discoveries (that would’ve been cool to make on my own) while still leaving me kind of stuck on the puzzles. Finally today I figured out the solution to one of the puzzles and have now finally unlocked a new area to explore (just taking a break to brush my teeth first, and write this). In the end I did figure this one puzzle out on my own (although it’s already not a clean run because I’ve looked at video walkthroughs for two previous puzzles).

I needed two more items, and after getting them, that’s when I was stuck because the new area was also behind a kind of basic bomb puzzle that I just should’ve thought a little more about.

I mean, the reason Grim Fandango is so easy is that it’s “bubbled up”. Each area (except for year two, which is also the difficultest part) is small and “localized” so it’s easy to figure out what to do compared to bigger areas like this mega-sprawling Metroidvania.

I’m doubling down on loving Super Metroid Subversion so far; it’s just a matter of PEBCAB (“problem exists between controller and bed”).

During the break from Super Metroid Subversion (which itself is a break from Omori) I played a little bit of Solstice (game over screen says I’m at a litle over 13%—I have the first key, the boots, two checkpoints, a hat, and a detonator. My house rule is that I can save state at checkpoints [and I use separate slots for them] and reload either of them as many times as I please. Since unlike Solomon’s Key where the main part was the thinky, here it’s more of a traditional metroidvania albeit a very Oquonie-looking one, so replaying long stretches feel like a bigger part of the game. I enjoy playing it, it’s a curious and beautiful little game, after practicing a bit to get used to the the very floaty and bad controls). Manual is required for Solstice since there are four potions and in game you can only tell them apart by color (color-blind people, don’t worry: the bottles each have a fixed location on your screen) along with some very unintuitive controls that make Plague of Shadows or Duck Tales 1 look like autorunners by comparison. (Start button doesn’t pause, it uses potion powers [the one that’s selected on the Select screen], and there’s a “jump, drop block, jump again” A+B+A maneuver you need to learn. Along with understanding how the blocks which you carry like Super Mario Bros 2 are invisible while you carry them and they only live on the current screen.) Solstice reminds me of Barbuta on the LX1. Barbuta has some of the exact same puzzles actually.

I got into Solstice after beating the Pico-8 demake of Stephen’s Sausage Roll (which only has the first world). Puzzle games are usually so hopeless because at first they’re way too easy and then they suddenly get too hard on like the penultimate level or something and I end up spend 95% of the game’s playtime on the last 5% of the game, but, here I had the opposite problem. I thought it was incredibly difficult until it clicked and my brain cooked up a bunch of techniques and patterns and heuristics and then I could breeze through it (although absolutely not a zero death run even after the “click”—I definitely was “thinking with my hands” and trial-and-erroring a bunch as opposed to thinking it through). Like how in chess you get better once you know how to fork and pin and X-ray and all that. Also to my regret I only accidentally discovered on the very last puzzle that if I reset by mistake (which I did many times—I hate Pico-8’s default button placement) it’s possible to undo that resetting with the same undo button that can also undo moves. (And also I’ve got to say that growing up on more sticklery and ornery sokoban variants, the generous undo and reset options in Baba is You and Stephen’s Sausage Roll [at least this demake version] are great. That’s not where the challenge of the game should be. I get that Adventures of Lolo might be different in that regard since it has an action element and levels are shorter.)

I played some more Loderunner (although only negative progress—struggling now with levels I could beat easily a few days ago) and some of my beloved Clu-Clu Land. I’m finally getting comfy using RetroArch and how to save settings and such. Since the only point of save states for Clu-Clu Land is to keep the high score, but that’s a mighty important reason to use it, I set it up to automatically save and load state for just Clu-Clu Land. I have “configuration save on exit” off so that I only make deliberate changes and then I can have a bunch of platform specific overrides and then even more overrides for separate games. (Although I haven’t figured out how to get the games to save the shader settings. There are plenty of games where I want CBOD [the two main ones are Mario Golf GBC and Prince of Persia SFC] and plenty of games where I absolutely do not want it. And for some games there are other shaders I want and most I don’t want any. Underscale vs overscale vs non-int scale is also something I do differently for each game but that part does get saved properly by the override file.)

And I lost sleep because I spent one whole night playing one of the latter days of Famicom’s pinnacle games: “新4人打ちマージャン 役満天国” (or as I just call it, Yakuman Heaven) and then the next day completely hooked on Tetris Plus. I’ve played both cames a bunch before and beware, they’re both super addictive. Both have that “one more game” loop where it’s so hard to quit. (A good life hack there is actually to save-state in the middle of a run instead. Obvs as much as I fret over how much or how little to use save states for save scumming, it’s fine to use them for just literally taking a break from the game.)

I also found a huge stack of Nintendo Power. I looked through just one of the issues (issue #14, after playing Solstice for a bit I wanted to see what they had to say about it), or rather, I only looked through the back half starting on page 43, but, just that one issue gave me so many ideas of interesting games I’d like to play, some I’ve never heard of and some I was like “oh yeah! I forgot about that one, I wanted to play that one as a kid but never got the chance”. Wow! Playing retro games is a never-ending cornucopia, an undrinkable firehose. The only winning move is to realize that it’s like a whole damn ocean and take it one at a time.

This list isn’t exhaustive because I also played some Smash Tennis, some of the Paper Plane subgame of the GBA version of Wario Ware, a tiny bit of Pokémon UltraViolet, and some other rando puzzle games on the Pico-8.

Yes, my screentime is through the roof and my WWW boycott is in name only because I have had zero willpower this week. It’s been videogame mania. Real life’s been pretty bad (although thursday was nice, I made a new friend I think) and I’m neglecting actually doing things around the house since I just wanna play video games all day every day. Fun fun fun. 💀

alright so, at least partly inspired by @sandra@idiomdrottning.org's www boycott efforts, my spouse and I are going to go screen-free together on Saturday afternoons, 12-6pm. No phones, laptops, video games, movies, shows, or podcasts, just board games, puzzles, talking, walking, musical instruments, books, art supplies, and records. Also no chores or errands either. Phones will go into a nice wooden box for the duration - not locked or anything, just as a kind of ritualistic gesture. I'm really looking forward to finding things to do, or even just not doing anything, honestly

My boardgame H-index is 18 which is just a fancy word for having played 18 different games at least 18 times each, only counting since I started logging which was December 2024. Getting to 19 is within reach (one problem is that I keep forgetting to log our many yahtzee games) but twenty might be hard given that one of the games I’ve played 19 times is Hive and I don’t think we’re gonna play it anymore. We got into a very draw-prone groupthink leading almost every single game to end with a draw.

I have been running `du` on a directory in a ZFS dataset and it was showing:

- 800GB

Then I copied the directory to another computer on an ext4 partition.

`du` gave me:

- 400GB

I thought there was a problem with the network transfer.

`du` shows 800GB in the ZFS dataset because it is configured to have 2 copies of the data.

I gave in and looked at maps for Super Metroid Subversion and that didn’t help (only spoiled some things that I didn’t want to have spoiled) so I looked at a video for just the one room. And at first I didn’t understand what the guy was doing.

I didn’t realize that the door wasn’t opening until I had killed all the enemies. There’s an environmental hazard in that room that kills me after a while and I’ve tried it many many times. And I’ve tried blasting the door (it’s kind of hard to reach) and I’ve tried killing all the enemies but… Not in that reverse order or at least if I have tried it I hadn’t managed so now I did.

So here is where my save was when I wasn’t playing this game since last summer. When I took it back up, I gave up on this area and accidentally did a huge sequence break, beating an entire boss and getting a new item before getting the item from this area. And that other new item allowed me to reach previously unreachable spaces—only to immediately be met by more locks! And the in-game log book wasn’t helpful either since it didn’t realize I didn’t have this original missing item. Oh well! Probably five to eight hours of gameplay wasted on zero progress just stubbornly bombing every nook and cranny (not literally every nook and cranny since looking at the map earlier showed me the way to a small ammo tank that I had previously missed) or bombjumping my way up to areas I’m not supposed to be at yet.

So okay I still think Super Metroid Subversion is a very good game (so far—I still have more than half of the game left). The problem is that I didn’t understand how to open the gray doors and I couldn’t see the grayness of the door properly since the room was shaking.

The whole “8–15 hours for a casual playthrough” well uh I’m waaaay past that! But, I’m enjoying the game so that’s fine.

I was praising Super Metroid Subversion to a friend yesterday… Immediately followed by me being stuck without any progress for four hours. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I am about fourtyy percent through the game. I’m like “I can tell I need this item but to get it I need that item and to get that I need an item I have to idea where it is”.

I took a break from Omori. I don’t enjoy the contrasting two worlds. If the game had been all either world, I’d be more into it. The “Adventure Style” world is the best part but feels super tedious and meaningless given what the other world is telling me. I am gonna give it more ofa chance, I just needed a breather. The edgelordy selfharm part makes Omori impossible to recommend to anyone. It’d just feel irresponsible. It’s about important topics, just not in a healthy way.

I did play through one of the world’s shortest RPGs: “Wandering”. It’s part of the Live A Live multicart from Squaresoft. I played the SNES version, not the remake. Fun and good if you can live with the game being 50% cutscenes. I had to play the scenario twice because I didn’t understand that you had to talk to the sheriff before you can start delegating work.

I also booted up two other SNES RPGs. Arcana and The Record of Lodoss War. Arcana seems fun but if I were to get into it, it’d mean putting The Dark Spire on an even fallower hold since it’s kinda similar. The Record of Lodoss War seems more promising. SNES is so clunky for action games but kind of a good home for adventure games and RPGs.

Get down with the sickness och ta varandra vackert i hand!

Snälla C, S, V och MP sansa er, get it together and get together.

going through cs50p; decided to remake my Gemini bookmarks page and improve the functionality (the old one is still at cgi-bookmarks.gmi while I beta test this one)

gemini://gemini.patatas.ca/bookmarks.gmi

now instead of a csv file for each link category, it's a list of dictionaries, one for each category; within each of those 'category dicts' is another list of dicts, one for each bookmark record.

the code's pretty messy, but no one ever got good at something without first doing it badly! So, even with my best efforts at exception handling etc, there's probably a couple nasty bugs still. I'll run it for a bit, and then pop it up on codeberg for anyone interested.

The dawn has vanquished the horrible game! I completed FFIV DS! (Thanks to the help of november and esoterik in one of the early rough parts of the game.)

All of the good will the game had built up with me these past two days evaporated when I found out there was no save spot before the final boss. And so did my ability to complete the game without save states. It’s at least three dungeon levels down from the closest save (yep, that same save spot I’ve been relying on for months, since even before moving the game over from the DSi to the Retroid) including the Masamune extra boss and mapping out all the chests. After dying on my previous trek down from that save spot I took a long break but this second attempt, after going back up and finding most of the stuff on the dungeon’s upper level, I got down to the final boss on the first try (I almost TPK’d three times but all three of those times I managed to hold on and pull through and after the fight raise everyone) but it took several hours. Replaying several hours of tedious autobattling and a not-so-tedious Masamune fight and watching through an excruciatingly long cutscene/feature-film every single try is not reasonable, Square!

I realized last second that “oh yeah, I’m on emu now, unlike earlier, and I can drop a save state” during the very last part of the cutscene, still holding out hope that there’d either still be a place to save for real before the fight actually started, or, failing that, a way to continue the game after failing against the boss. But nope, neither, and I ended up loading that save five more times for six tries total, including the two where I just reloaded right away because I accidentally threw the knifey-spooney before the shield/mask was down.

Not that I needed to use the knifey-spooney (it’s a knife in the DS version and a spoon on American SNES. It’s a cleaver in the Japanese version). It only does about the same amount of damage as a fuma shuriken. But because I really really really wanted to use it since I earlier, after finding out about that item, ended up reloading an earlier save just before the last chance to get it, and ended up having to replay a dungeon (the one where we went in the big robot) just because I wanted to get that item so badly. Not a save state, I wasn’t using save states before today. A real SRM save, one of the three built in save slots.

So those two reloads and then four real fights. Three failed ones and then the successful one where I had the right strategy/timing and everything just rolled downhill easily and everyone was alive with full health at the end. I’ll put the strategy I used in rot13 because I do want to post it because it’s unlike any of the advice I found online for this fight: Juvyr gur obff pna raq zntvpny rssrpgf yvxr fybj, furyy, be ersyrpg, gur gevpx vf gb fgneg gubfr nsgre ur raqf gurz. V’z abg fher ersyrpg qbrf nalguvat ohg furyy naq fybj pregnvayl obgu jrer irel rssrpgvir. Ebfn gur ZIC.♥︎

So in conclusion there’s a lot to love about this game. It looks ugly (and, Melon DS you know I love you and please please keep up the good work♥︎♥︎♥︎ but you made this particular game look way worse than it did on real hardware) but the mocap almost makes up for it. They have managed to convey so much emotion through those abominable marionettes.

I had no idea when I picked this version that it was gonna be that much harder than a normal FF game. This was the first FF I ever beat. I’ve played the first dungeon (died at the first boss) in FF six through nine, but that was in high school.

I’ve gotten way farther in a few SaGa games. Those, I love.

I took two long breaks from the game (where I played other games in between). One was in second town when you need to get the medicine. I realized I hated ATB. I went back to it after a month or so, after changing a few settings and just accepting that I was gonna hate that part of the game. The second long break was in the final dungeon after playing for three hours after the final save spot in the game and then dying. The break did wonders for my feelings for the game. Huh, whaddayaknow? Sometimes quitters do win because taking a break can be healthy.

My list of games I wanna play is like 200 games long and more FF games are pretty far down the list. In case I do get to them or get in the mood to push them up in the queue, it’s gonna be through romhacks most likely. I’ve found one for FFIX and one for FFIV that seems to make the games more enjoyable. But I dunno!

So far I haven’t been using the save states at all on SG-1000 Lode Runner and I haven’t beaten level five (the one that says SEGA) so I thought up a gamified and hopefully fun way to use them that adds another layer of decision into the game:

1. I can have one save state. If I want to place a new one, I have to start the game over at the beginning first.

2. I can only reload it after I die in the game. I.e. if I just lose one life right at the save state point, I can’t then reload just to get that one life back.

This way I can still practice the harder levels a little bit more while still having to replay the early levels every once in a while, with the end goal of being able to play through the entire game from start to finish without save states.

I also started playing Omori. Getting it installed and running took three and a half hours and was almost a game in and of itself. But by now I’m a few hours into the actual game. Really invested in it already with these interesting characters. It has one of the same drawbacks as FFIV DS does: knocked out characters don’t get XP.

Speaking of FFIV DS, I’ve also played a little bit more of it. Ironically really enjoying it at this point, this particular stretch of the game, I only hate how the music starts over. And I was ragging on Melon DS earlier but I feel really guilty about that since I know it’s FOSS and it’s a labor of love and I can’t then go looking that horse into the mouth too much. I think it’s a driver issue because I’ve found the source of the slowdown: it’s when there is light or glow effects like when the characters praying.

I also went back to Dragonsweeper for some of the achievements. After finding the main game too easy, I really did struggle a bit with the achievements, which I enjoyed doing, and it was only after getting them that I noticed some of the monster patterns (I mean gazers [also loving the gall of putting “Product Identity” non-OGL monsters into your game♥︎] and slime summoners) and that would’ve made it a li’l easier.

Big Bungo writes about a mkcd shell alias:

Why did I have to use two commands every single time?

Yeah, I have something similar as one of my oldest and most used shell functions. I called it md. I use mkdir -p so it just works even if the directory already is there and it autocreates any parent directories as needed.

With how jinxes and Murphy works, the drawback of “if I misspell one of the parent dir it can lead to mistakes” will happen juuust after writing this even though it hasn’t for 25 years of using it.

I’ve felt so guilty starting new books on Bookwyrm since I’ve got so many “currently reading” books on there already. But this vow hopefully fixes that and removes that guilt by stating explicitly that starting books is actually okay and good, it’s acquiring them that’s not.

A stitch in time saves nine.

Today I’ve been playing FFIV DS. Not quite done yet but I’ve made good progress. I’ve got a save deep in the dungeon and have been taking expeditions back to earlier levels to get treasure chests I’ve missed before. I’ve only died once today, vs a red dragon. Then after I beat it on the second try I didn’t head back to the save right away (it’s quite far—like eight or nine encounters away) but pushed on upwards and defeated a behemoth on the first try (I lucked out) and got some gear that woulda coulda shoulda been good against that red dragon I already defeated. Fun fun fun.♥︎

I’ve been having a good time with the game today. Dungeon crawling is where the game works the best as long as I have a party full of interesting and variying abilities. The magnet cave where alls I could do was spam X or escape was no fun, but the game shines when it tries to be Slay the Spire, where there are different strategies and approaches to the fights. Right now Rydia of all people is my main DPS with her paralyzing arrows. Edge is on “spamming Shadowbind” duty. The biggest challenge is keeping him and Kain alive so I can get XP for them with the “level lust” augment Rosa is carrying. He’s gonna be good when I’m in a fight where it’s worth using up all my throwable weapons (I’m definitely not an item hoarder and usually when I reach the end of games I’ve long been completely tapped, but here I have already used up so many of his shuriken and other throwable weapons just to get to this point in the game. I can’t waste them on this combined treasure cruise / grindfest).

I’m okay with the ridiculous difficulty like how it took me several tries (having to replay hours after each death) to even reach this save spot. By now I’m pretty overleveled but I still die every now and then.

But, I still think this game has so many pretty foundational design flaws. I don’t like the ATB, I don’t like how the music starts over each time you enter or exit a battle (those stabbing chords in this particular dungeon’s theme have definitively outstayed their welcome), and I really don’t like how characters don’t get XP if they’re knocked out. That means the weakest characters will stay the weakest unless I make raising them the main focus (which I do since I want them to start catching up).

I’m also having trouble getting Melon DS standalone to run smoothly. It’s weird because this handheld might be dinky but it runs Wii games uprezzed and at stable speed. Here, it slows down every now and then. I’ve tried software renderer (threaded and unthreaded) and opengl renderer. Audio I’ve tried all three latencies and even bumped it down to ten bits. I’m gonna delve into the system settings outside of the app and hopefully find a solution there. Yeah, yeah, Android actually does have a native port of FFIV DS but I couldn’t’ve brought my save over from the actual DS if I used that version.

Also yesterday I tried one of the more game specific “launchers” (one called Beacon) but today I went back to just normal Quickstep and opening RetroArch, Gamehub, Pico-8, Melon DS, Scumm VM etc manually. Those game-focused launchers are nice when they work perfectly but I don’t think it’s worth my time to try to set it up to work perfectly. Some folks think it’s fun to do that kind of setup but I don’t enjoy it at all.

Here on my tablet I run PieLauncher and am gonna keep using it, but I don’t think it’s a good fit for a handheld that has built in game controls.

I spent all day yesterday playing video games but it was procastinatinception since I wasn’t even playing the games I had set out to play (which I think is gonna be primarily FFIV DS).

I played some Mother 3 (game made by the same guy who makes Hobonichi calendars): I didn’t make any progress past the save point I had except in my head where maybe I came up with some new strategies. I was trying to test out the lower-latency settings which… I mean it’s never gonna get as good as playing it on the GBA-mode of my 2DS, and even then I had a hard time with the rhythm-based fighting system. I hit double hits maybe one out of five and triple-hits maybe one out of a thousand. I’ve never gotten more than six hits in. I’m okay at Voez and Deltarune but this is so frustrating. And supposedly you can get through the game without getting in even a single double-hit but it’s still frustrating in a “leaving value off the table” sort of way.

I played lots of Tetris Plus. I played through the game on Game Boy Pocket when it first came out and it was one of those strange games that instead of coming out on SNES and Game Boy, it came out on PSX and Game Boy (and arcades). I was always curious about the PSX version and now that I am on emu, I can try it! Except not really because it sucked! There’s lots of charming cut scenes and fun (annoying) audio cues, but the graphics are shrunken down because the entire TV screen is letter boxed and then the playfield only takes up the left half in order to leave the entire right half of the screen as a “player 2 press start” graphic. The controls are also different. The controls on the Game Boy version aren’t exactly Rosy Retrospection or Lockjaw level but they’re absolutely playable with zero issue for me (you can even do t-spins!), whereas on the PSX version there’s too much delay between input and action, and way too much delay before repeat. (I.e. if I hold left it only takes one step left at first and then after super long time it takes more steps left, it just feels weird and frustrating.) The biggest missing feature though is that on the Game Boy version you can set difficulty. As in, the game has already increasingly difficult stages (so far, I made it past the first two world-levels, so 40 sublevels in total) and that’s true for both versions but on GB there’s also a setting to make it more difficult by having the ceiling drop faster.

I’m playing on “Very Hard”, the hardest out of four, since I already beat the game in the 90s. I’m also using lots of continues, that’s fine, just getting through the game at all is fun enough. It’s weird, I played through the game once, I loved it, it’s one of the most memorable gaming experiences I had back then, and then… never booted it up again? It has a “Classic mode” (basically like Mode A in the original game) that I’ve to this day never ever even tried. I wasn’t that spoiled growing up but when it came to Tetris I absolutely was. I had the original Tetris and Tetris Attack before Plus, and later got Tetris DX. That’s four versions all on the same system. To me that felt incredibly wasteful and I was so grateful and thankful for them. I never had Tetris 2 a.k.a. Tetris Flash (but I played the NES version on the 2DS a few years back. Fun, but, too easy).

Also the PSX version has loading times. Even on emu it has them. Maybe there’s a setting to get rid of that but I didn’t explore too deeply. This is the first time I’ve ever emulated PlayStation or even “had” a PlayStation game (even though I pirated it). My first PSX game: Tetris Plus and it sucks and I’m back to playing the GB version instead because that one is awesome. I have played lots and lots of PSX at a friend’s house and I had the Windows version of Tomb Raider II so I know a little bit, but…

I also played through a Pico-8 game, another Celeste mod, it was water based and pretty fun, something something ultimate selfie. It was on the easier side which I appreciate since boosting straight up is so unreliable on my setup for I-don’t-know-why reason.

I thought of looking through the Games section on F-Droid and dive into some FOSS games but that backfired because I found an installer for Itch games and I have plenty from the various RPG bundles I’ve gotten over the years. There’s VVVVVV! One of my faves on the 3ds. I already played through the main campaign and most of the bonus campaigns on there but now I embarked on Maddy’s levels. Such a fun and good game and it plays tightly on here.

I also played Breaker (the color-switching rotation bullset-bouncing game) which I really loved but I beat it too quickly. I mean, there are high scores so I can play it endlessly I guess but I beat the pre-defined top-score almost right away. It was just up my alley as a bullet hell type game where I don’t need to shoort or hurt anyone. I’m bad at video games but I think a great part of the challenge here is the mindmess of the color switching and my mutant brain didn’t have a problem there. (It’s the same with that test where color words like “red” or “green” or “blue” are written in the “wrong” colors and you’re supposed to read them off or list the real colors and I, at least when a teacher did this test on me in high school, could just do either effortlessly and not get them confused with each other. Maybe I wouldn’t be able to now in my mid forties but at least I had no problems with this game!

One that I didn’t have in any bundles but it was gratis was Dragonsweeper—there are several games with that name but this one was on Game Grumps recently. I’ve played waaay too much Minesweeper in my life so I got through it easily too. It’s easier than Minesweeper beacuse it gives you more info. It did take three runs: first was really long but that one ended when I was at eleven hearts because I had misunderstood the heart scroll mechanics: I thought they gave you a heart but did not heal you but it’s the other way around. Second run I took a gamble early on and got max punished. Third run was the charm and that one took 17 minutes. I haven’t looked at the achievements page yet so maybe I can squeeze some more life out of it but then again maybe I’d be better off unistalling it. I’ve gotten a li’l too addicted to sgt-puzzles a couple of times. I like to go to one of the easier puzzles like tents, mapcoloring, or the one where you rotate network components around, and crank up the map size and difficulty to max so it takes a long time while still being just easy and cozy and straightforward. Just a big old timesink.

I mentioned Game Grumps earlier. Yes. My WWW boycott fell to complete shambles yesterday. I only watched a few minutes of that particular episode but I did watch them do the silent movie foley and I saw Saffron Olive’s changeling/ninja deck episode. When I embarked on the WWW boycott, I realized that I was probably still gonna watch Best Standard Deck Ever and Grumplocke but I was gonna try to cut down on other videos from those channels and elsewere. That’s not the worst part because the worst part is that whenever I search for a rom or a bios or a setting on the device, I get sucked in to these inane conversations with the Google search engine. I’m like “how do I select difficulty in Tetris Plus on PSX” and it’s like “Oh that’s not possible” and forty minutes later we’ve had this super shallow convo on who is the best character in Deltarune or whatever. I’m too dumb and lonely to not get reverse-turing-tested. This is why I need the WWW boycott! 😤

I have browsers locked on here (the tablet) but not on the emu “Game Boy”-style handheld, is the problem.

Oh yeah, and I asked it how to solve two of the early puzzles in Monkey Island 2. I really regretted it after because I’ve played the game like four times but it’s been twenty years since the most recent time. I did follow the rule I had for point-and-click adventure games back in the day: don’t look at a walkthrough unless I’ve spent an entire session with zero progress. I.e. get stuck, then spend the entire next session with zero progress, then start the next session still trying my best and if I’m still stuck, I can look at a walkthrough. But even when following that rule I often enough regret it. I don’t regret it too much when there’s like an item I’ve missed (and here I did miss one item but I hadn’t looked properly there) but I do really regret it when I have everything I need, I’m just not thinking things through properly. The problem here was that I had locked my mind into thinking that the bucket was gonna be the solution for the wrong puzzle. I need to remember that all items in adventure games are multi-purpose.

I was so proud of having beaten Marvelous without a walkthrough. I asked for bird hints three times, the first was really useful (how to catch the frog: great hint because I had tried with the right item but must’ve gotten a pixel off or something so I wasn’t gonna get that one or keep trying that method unless the bird had told me that that was the way and even so it took like seven more tries, not good for an adventure game), the other two were less than nothing since they misunderstood where I was stuck and told me things I was already past, and I did look at an online guide at one other point but that didn’t tell me anything either (how to get past the wall of plants in chapter three—I guess the solution was too obvious for the guide creator and in hindsight it was, once I figured it out, which in the end I did myself). I was actually stuck for longer for the honey drop puzzle in chapter four but I ended up figuring it out on my own. So, going for that to literally looking things up in a puzzle I’ve already played four times is a step back. 😅

I was arguing with a friend, and my point was that, if you believe eating pasture-raised eggs are a more ethical choice than industrial cage-farmed eggs, then it can be reasonable for someone else to use your same reasoning to instead explain their own veganism. I'm not vegan myself, but it seems obvious to me that, with zero insight into the inner lives of animals, any line drawn regarding animal suffering is completely arbitrary: whatever your standards are, they necessarily always can justify stricter standards, up to and including not farming animals in any way at all.

So no matter where you draw the line, if you say "these are my standards to ensure that I'm eating eggs that cause the least suffering possible", you have to admit you have no knowledge of the final amount of suffering created, and that from then on you're simply balancing your own access to eggs with hypothetical suffering you could be preventing by switching to a stricter standard. This is reasonable: if I'm not sure switching from pasture-raised eggs to something even stricter will significantly reduce suffering, but it will make it harder for me to access eggs, I have no real reason to do it.

But this means, for instance, that if at any point an egg alternative is released onto the market that covers all your usage of eggs and is as widely available to you, the sole fact you were willing to draw a line somewhere and had the goal to reduce suffering means the only logical course of action would be to switch to the alternative, since then you're reducing hypothetical suffering, but at no loss to yourself.

Does this make sense? Or does it feel like an unwarranted jump?

Like, in Deltarune the challenge was almost never “the save point is too far away”, it was just difficult anyway, and maybe SD Snatcher will be similar in that regard. Or I’ll have to “make my own fun” 🙁 i.e. take the responsibility to strike the balance between challenge and tedium myself. 🤦🏻‍♀️

2026-04-14 13:01 +0000

author: @Sandra

So I booted up SD Snatcher, the MSX version.

The core mechanics and gameplay loop seem fun and rewarding so far (after remapping Graph to B. It defalts to L2) but there are two problems:

There are no many tedious loading screens that I enabled fast forward. I can maaaybe rationalize that as “okay just imagine it’s a port from the slow MSX to a fast cart based system”, a port from the world of dreams.

The bigger issue is the save system. As far an I can tell, it lets me save basically anywhen. Not in dialogs or mid fight but any location even mid-dungeon. That really takes a lot of the edge and interest out of the game when failing is so unpunishing.

So far it’s been plenty punishing because the save system entails swapping disks (so RetroArch needs a special “user disk” to be in a writable folder unlike other roms) which is tedious and slow. A li’l too tedious and slow so I’m probably gonna switch to using save states. But then if I’m just fast-forwarding and save-scumming my way through a game like this, why am I even playing the game instead of just watching a video? 🤔

Some older games kind of “need” save states to become good. Like Solomon’s Key on the NES. By using save states to get an endless amount of attempts at each level (but not save-scumming within the levels), it becomes a very good and still challenging and engaging li’l action puzzler that tests both wits and reflexes where it originally was a tedious quarter-muncher. And other games lets you use save states to emulate what my friend’s dad used back in the day to beat Rygar: he just left the console on and the TV off and told us not to touch it. I.e. only save-stating on the continue screen. (When I beat Rygar myself a few years ago I ended up save-stating in one additional location: just outside the final boss’ door. The trek there was just a little too long, I had to admit, after attempting it a few times. Same with Ninja Gaiden 1 on the NES: I created two extra checkpoints on the very last level. i( my defense I was playing that one on a broken laptop keyboard.)

But some games just don’t have a clear save/restore policy. Maybe that’s fine: like AGI/SCI games where death is so cheap that you’re expected to save-scum your way through it.

I’m starting to feel weird about posting about video games. I’m all caught up on Deltarune now, I just beat chapter four. It was the best chapter. I know I read a lot of horror novels but this chapter played into a couple of specific phobias of mine so I really had to IWNAY myself in order to not quit it. Glad I did.👍🏻

Chapter four introduced an entire new game mechanic. Games doing that really risk it all and sometimes it can fall super flat. Like in Pandemic Legacy, I really really hated the “search” mechanic so much and it didn’t feel like what I signed up for, and Deltarune chapter three had some new kinda fun but also flawed new mechanics, but here, the new “climbing” mechanic was just up my alley.

Chapter three is also bookended by awesomeness but that awesomeness is technically the end of chapter two and the start of chapter four, respectively, so, uh, that just helps combine make chapter four the best. Although it’s pointless to review Deltarune. You have to play chapters in order and the first two chapters are gratis so everyone can see for themselves if they’re into it or not. Just: if they liked it at first but then petered off, they might wanna consider getting back to it because chapter four is then really good (I felt).

I played Earthbound before Undertale and Undertale before Deltarune and I feel pretty good about that order. 🤷🏻‍♀️

The end boss was frustrating for me for three reasons:

Next game is gonna be SD Snatcher. I also still have FFIV DS, Super Metroid Subversion, and Order of Ecclesia to complete. On the more distant horizon are Sweet Home and the SNES version of Prince of Persia.

The upcoming Swedish fossil-fuel subsidies are gonna cost tax payers 1600 million crowns (that’s not including all the pre-existing fossil fuel subsidy programs). That is high compared to many other things we would wanna do (like restoring peatlands).
