What is this page?

The Webcomic Independent Wiki List, or WCIWL, is an opt-in list of wikis about webcomics. All wikis on this list are either hosted independently, or use hosts that do not interfere with their editorial decisions. In particular, wikis hosted by fandom.com are excluded. For the detailed criteria for inclusion, scroll down.

What isn't this page?

WCIWL is NOT a webring. Listed wikis do not need to link to other listed wikis, nor do they need to link back here.

Unlike the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance, WCIWL is NOT a formal alliance of wikis. There is no organization backing this page. Wikis do not vote on membership: inclusion on the list is at my discretion. In particular, wikis on the list do NOT necessarily endorse other wikis on the list.

Formal inclusion criteria

The site must be a wiki.

The wiki must be about one or more webcomics.

The creature or organization managing the technical backend must be non-evil. In more detail, this means

Editorial decisions should rest with the editing community, not the host.

3b

The editing community should have the ability to request technical changes to the site and expect help from the host, within the legal, technical, and financial limits of the host.

The host must not insert LLM-generated nonsense into wiki articles.

3d

The host must not attempt to prevent the wiki community from migrating to a different host if the community so desires, either through technical or legal methods.

Technical methods of preventing migration include keeping an old copy of departing wikis on their site, using an undocumented proprietary format for storing data to prevent it from being imported, or refusing to allow data exports at all.
Legal methods of restricting migration include Terms of Service agreements granting the host ownership of all wiki text and prohibiting anyone from reposting it.

The host must not be a bigot.

The wiki's software should not be egregiously insecure, or egregiously outdated the point where it causes problems for the wiki. The definition of "egregiously" is intentionally not specified. I may apply a different standard for new wikis to be added to the list than for removing existing wikis from the list.

One or more admins of the wiki must explicitly give me permission to list them. This list is "opt-in."

I must think the wiki is of sufficiently high quality to recommend.

Non-requirements

The following criteria are NOT and have never been requirements for inclusion on the list, but one or more creature has mistakenly thought they were requirements.

Reciprocity: Listed wikis are NOT required to link back here, nor are they required to link to other wikis on the list.
Wiki software: Listed wikis are NOT required to use MediaWiki. As of February 2025, eight of the ten listed wikis use MediaWiki.

Mirrors

As mentioned above, listed wikis do not need to link here, or to other listed wikis. However, three wikis on the list have chosen to replicate the WCIWL on their sites. These are

As of 2024 November 27, all of these mirrors show the exact same list as this page. However, this is not guarenteed to remain the case. Each of these wikis is run by a different community. The wiki communities might have different ideas as to what other wikis they want to link to, in which case the version of the list on this page might differ from the versions on the wikis in the future.
