Hello again
It's been a little over three years since I posted on here. I believe my serer has been up for at least most of that time (I'm sure it went down a few times without my noticing), but I haven't put any of my thoughts here or engaged with the community in any way.
But I remembered how useful this place was to work out ideas I had, to put them out somewhere, and specifically in a place that had not been completely socially corrupted, like the ordinary internet. So I'm hoping to do the same again, to use this place as a way to work out ideas in a less encumbered way, to solicit the thoughts and advice of the folks who care to read it, and to be part of a technology that is much more aligned with my way of thinking.
I'll probably forget again. I only have so much time and brain power. But perhaps there will be things others find useful here, and regardless it will be useful for me.
At any rate, I never really put much personal information on here, other than a post about being an alcoholic. But might as well give a quick update on the last three years.
- I'm still sober. Definitely a couple relapses, but sobriety is pretty integral to my personality now, not in the sense that I think about it, but precisely because I don't have to think all that much about it now.
- I unionized my workplace.
- I was promptly fired for unionizing my workplace.
- I'm a full time union organizer now for a large union in the US. This means that basically everyone is pissed at me except for the members of my union. The right wing in my state wants to destroy us. The existing labor movement thinks I'm a crazy radical (even though I've organized more new unionists than they have in the last 30 years). The (bad) communists want me to be yelling at buildings. The (bad) anarchists want me to be taking more "direct action." But none of that stuff matters without an actual base of working-class support to fight with, so I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track.
- I helped lead a successful strike.
- I helped overturn a law.
- I started a non-profit.
- I got older.
- I resurrected an old band and get to play music all the time.
- I switched to Arch Linux.
- I still tinker and script and write little Rust programs.
- I'm still a communist fighting as hard as I can to create the possibilities for a better world.
