Whole Earth habitable land use (12x12 edition)
The 12x12 emoji grid below represents the 106 million km² of the Earth's surface which are habitable (i.e. what's left after excluding the oceans, deserts, glaciers, etc.). Each individual emoji represents approximatley 736,000 km² of the Earth's surface. That's a little more than twice the size of Germany, or a little less than twice the size of Japan, or a bit bigger than Texas. The different emojis show what that land is used for, either by humans or by nature. There's a key below. The emojis are ordered from most to least total land use. For the purpose of this ordering, all livestock are grouped together, though they are visualised separately.

This emoji grid isn't visualising the whole Earth, just the habitable land: oceans, deserts, rocky mountains, glaciers and things like that are excluded.
This 12x12 grid is designed to fit comfortably on a smartphone or other small-screened device.
