Not as fun

B: its interesting but i still can not get myself to spend more money even with this huge pay bump
B: i go to the grocery store and im like, many i can buy all the smoked salmon and naked smoothies i want, but still feel guilty doing so
B: its almost like its not as fun or doesnt taste as good if i didnt get a good deal on a purchase

Greed

B: so looks like one of the HR ppl im working with had her last day yesterday and tells me lots of ppl coming and going! And then i'm seeing 3/5 rating on glassdoor when most companies are 4/5. i smell #toxicEnvironment. im ignoring the cues though cause still blinded by 🤑

Reputable sources (longer version)

B: so did u end up accepting the offer Anton?
A: I did
B: did they accept a higher negotiation?
A: I didn't ask, 20% bump is good enough for me
B: wow u really dont know the current market value, u easily could have earned 140-150
B: I don't think u get it at all, u may understand software, but u don't know jack about business
A: Sorry man, please tell me how much I could make when you get a single offer in this “current market” range
B: My rejections have absolutely nothing to do with my salary range, every experienced dev, every redditor, and every recruiter I've talked to, not one single one told me my market value was less than 120-180
A: Lol every redditor and recruiter. I'll ask some of my former coworkers and friends in dev and we'll see

How could they?

A: Just for lulz, I asked dev friends about their salaries
A: $105K, $105K, $115K, $130K (all have ~10 years experience)
B: here's the ranges that my opportunities were presented at
B: [spreadsheet of salaries ranging $80,000 - $250,000]
B: are u telling me all those companies are making things up?
A: Have you ever seen a commercial that says the product is mediocre and expensive?
A: Yes, they are lying, to lure you to apply.
B: i guess
B: i personally dont really think they're lying but however, i think the main issue is that I may not be truly qualified for those roles, because otherwise I wouldn't have even passed the interviews

Children

B: man some of these high tech companies have a squad of children as their engineers, i got interviewed by this asian girl that looked like she was 16

Grateful

B: I agree, i feel very grateful these days. I have everything I need. Good friends, good gf, good family, good shelter above my head, all the video games I could want, a great fitness center down the road with a hot tub, a ton of great restaurants around

OE

OE stands for OverEmployment, working multiple remote jobs at once

B: man as I'm reading more about OE and the number of interview offers that are exponentially flooding my inbox, they literally WANT you to double-dip, holy cow
...
B: [company] would be a 180k + 30k bonus opportunity
B: i wonder if i should OE after accepting my offer, it would mean 274 instead of 203
...
B: holy shit, another offer came on the table, this one is like 160k/170k
B: but i already accepted an offer
B: i might have to OE
...
B: i read about OE all the time, most of the time companies dont even care as long as u r delivering results
B: and im a fast and efficient coder so it could work out, 85% said they would OE if they were given this opportunity
B: success is for the bold
B: u play the game of OE, u either win or lose
...
B: so ppl are definitely doing it
B: u dont have to believe in what they're saying, but i can say that u dont choose OE, OE chooses u
B: when u got 3 offers on ur lap going for 150k, OE chooses u
...
[months later]
B: got fired from J4 today
B: that whole company was full of engineers from ivy league universities, they sold their soul to performance
A: I see you did a 180 on your opinions pretty fast there
B: 180 on opinions?
A: Right before that you were all about working as many jobs as possible and making every second of the day productive
B: that was earlier in the year when i didnt realize how ruthless these senior software dev positions are
B: i didnt want to get an offer, but if i did i was gonna take it
B: cause it forced me to OE which i had no intention to
A: What? You were talking about OE for months!
B: the fact that i had multiple 6 figure offers is what forced me to OE
B: originally i just wanted 1 offer
A: I'm fairly certain you were applying well intending to OE, at least from what I recall.
A: oh heelllllll no, back in May I absolutely never intended to OE
A: Don't do the Trump
B: i would like to quit OE eventually and return to my original state

WFH

B: ive been starting to wonder these days if im happier WFO or WFH
B: is WFH truly an upgrade?
B: i do not know
A: How does being in office make you happy?
B: Well, in one perspective u get a change of venue, removes cabin fever, can enjoy office coffee, ppl watching, walking in meeting rooms for hell of it, walking in cafeteria, walking in outside patio, smelling oxygen, seeing the real world, seeing a real life movie with things happening in real time, having discussions about the weekend, getting to drive a car, and parking, and turning the steering wheel and see it turn the whole car
A: Didn't you say you can go into office if you want/need?
B: I can but too lazy
A: I guess office coffee and peoplewatching isn't worth it
B: well, its not comfortable, but it's healhty. its kind of like exercise. it takes effort, but its good for you. so WFO could be a way to force me into somethign healthy.
A: I don't see what's “healthy” about it, just socializing with coworkers?
B: think of it like exercise
A: Doesn't answer my question of why it's healthy or good for you.
A: I had to drive 50 minutes each way to [previous job] to sit in a cube and talk to no one for 8 hours. I could have done the same work from home without wasting time and gas.

Open to critique

B: [link to a new project]
B: u can try creating ur own account as well, with the register button
B: im open for critique
A: Register a domain instead of a bitly link.
A: Username probably should not be case sensitive
A: Not mobile friendly but not sure of intended use. Normally a good idea to be mobile friendly.
A: Content link goes to google drive - host it on the site, or at least make links page consistent with the site
B: (1)a domain has no added value besides costing money
B: (2)usernames should always be case sensitive
B: (3)app is not intended to be used by mobile
B: (4)heroku only lets me store so much data, plus google drive is much easier to upload data
[further arguments]
B: so far zero value added feedback
B: next

Tests are slowing Ben down

B: the lead is enforcing delusional requirements that integration tests are required which is pretty much just slowing down everyone by 10x and its missing a lot of normal tests that u can only check manually
A: Why only manually? Do you work with external files a lot? I think automated tests should be able to cover almost all scenarios.
B: cause its faster to test manually than code all schenarios
B: it over-engineers the app
A: With automated tests, you write a test once and have computer test ever deploy.
A: Manual test you need to spend your own time every deploy.
A: Question is: do you value your time more one way or another
B: i dont think its a one time change, any time u modify a component, u have to update the tests, its over-engineering and wastes dev time
B: i believe in the soup principle
B: dont care what u do with the app, but if it passes the final filter, its good

I have no idea what the soup principle is

Hobby

B: im sort of having regrets quitting [old job]
B: it was kind of a fun hobby job in a way
A: You could get a hobby, work on what you want
B: i could but like i always say, its more fun when u hobby something that ppl actually need
B: and get paid for it
