Happy Sigrblot - Oath Updates 2
2025-04-11 - [54] 1:22
Quick update from my last post, I haven't gotten the <br> tag handling for blank gemtext lines when converting from gemtext to HTML figured out yet.
Continuing, tonight I begin celebrating Sigrblot! I also have an update on the oaths I made during Winter Nights, which is linked below.
Winter Nights 2024 - Oaths and Deleting My Mastodon Account
Sigrblot
Sigrblot is essentially "Victory Celebration", and for some, the start of the Summer half of the year, in opposition to Winter Nights, which is the start of the Winter half of the year. For the way I calculate Sigrblot, I start at Winter Nights of the previous Gregorian calendar year from the year I want to calculate Sigrblot for, then I count up 6 full moons and celebrate during the 3 nights the moon appears fullest during that full moon.
Another confusing way for me to put this is...
- Wait until the moment of the Spring Equniox
- After the Spring Equninox, wait until the next "Crescent New Moon" (when the Moon is first visible after the "New Moon" most people think of occurs. The very first moment the Waxing Gibbous Moon is visible for the Moon cycle, seen very shortly after Sunset)
- After the Crescent New Moon occurs but during that Moon cycle, Sigrblot occurs during the 3 nights the Moon looks fullest (essentially the night before, the night of, and the night after the Full Moon)
These rules are used for me to determine Winter Nights and Yule as well, but for Winter Nights, replace "Spring Equinox" with "Autumnal Equniox" and "Sigrblot" with "Winternights", and for Yule, replace "Spring Equniox" with "Winter Solstice" and "Sigrblot" with "Yule".
For me, it's a time to celebrate accomplishments of the first half of the Winter half of the year and to celebrate making it through Winter.
Oaths Update
So I made 5 oaths during Winter Nights. Those oaths were:
- Find and listen to at least 6 barely listened to albums from start to finish in the order intended by the artist without skipping through any songs (album song order)
- Actually read through all of "Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid" instead of constantly starting over and stopping at chapter 3 or 4
- Crochet a Winter hat by Yule
- Heavily clean my living quarters by Sigrblot, to the point where I'm not ashamed of people entering those living quarters
- Build a functioning sundial from scratch, no matter what material, and get an accurate time reading, accounting for the Equation of Time and Longitude
Here's an update on those 5 oaths.
6 Albums
I recently finished this one! The 6 albums I listened to were:
- "Junkman" by Don Rogers
- "Iced Over: Thawing Minnesota's Local Lore" by Tree Party
- "Shelterbelt" by Tree Party
- "Winetown" by Don Rogers
- "Breakthrough" by Der Anna
- "Restful Tales of the Shapeless Seasons" by Queen Willow
While I can't guarantee how many people listened to each of these albums before me, I highly suspect many of these were only a few dozen to maybe a few thousand people. Don Rogers' music is the one I'm less confident about how few people listened to the albums. With that said, these 6 albums seem to have fit my requirements well enough and I quite enjoyed listening to these 6 albums. Oath kept.
GEB
I finished reading "Godel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid" back in early February. It was quite a long read, but it seemed to get faster for me to read starting at about page 300. Excellent book, I'd recommend it. Oath kept.
Crochet a Winter Hat
I finished this one in December. I had to make a few hats until I got one that was crocheted correctly and properly fit head. Oath kept.
Cleaning Living Quarters
This one took me so much time and motivation, but I accomplished what I set out to do. There is still some more work and downsizing to do, but the point of the oath was the phrase "I'm not ashamed". Oath kept.
Build a Sundial
The only work I have done on this so far is some research here and there, mostly figuring out the angles of hours for different latitudes. No physical objects have been created or manipulated yet to build a sundial. Oath in progress.
Big Lebowski update
I finally watched it on Thursday. Before I watched it, I had very little information besides a nihilist exists, a bowling alley is a setting point at least once, and John Goodman was an actor in the movie. I had a few assumptions of what kind of movie it would be, but I can happily say my assumptions were completely wrong. Excellent movie! Would recommend!
Sometime last week, a friend of mine told me the story of "the sweater" as well. Apparently a friend of her dad owned the knitting mill that made that specific sweater and at some point after the movie was finished, the sweater got stolen. Eventually that specific sweater was found at a store or rental location of some sort across the country and the son of the owner made a sudden "rescue mission" trip to get the sweater back.
If any piece of clothing is going to have an artistic heist backstory like the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, I'm glad it's that particular sweater.
