It's like they learned nothing about #facebook.

#deltachat - @capitalthree #ArcaneChat / #DeltaChat don't have delivery receipts, only read receipts, the only automatic responses the app does in your behalf is to handle invite links, for that you first have to share invite link with the malicious contact, you can get in contact with random/public entity via their invite link and be safe, as long as it is not you the one sharing your invite link! in #Signal as soon as you contact someone or they guess your number you are vulnerable

Delta Chat (39c3) - On this day, two years ago, we published the first chatmail relay,
along with templates to replicate the setup, without needing any permission. Two weeks ago we thought there are 60 relays when a hacker handed in a 100+ list 😂 A bunch of knowledgeable folks are now maintaining track of health of the evolving global network, and supporting new operators. 💜💥🖤
thx also for all the support here on the fediverse! its been a wild year and #39c3 is in 13 days to top it off 😅

Delta Chat (39c3) - #chatmail relays are recently getting more artful in their web presence 🤩 Nice examples:
in Ontario, or
in Warszawa.
We estimate there are ~4 times more relays than in the published list at
Many relays are smaller ones, but that's fine. A 5 EUR per month VPS can go a long way (thousands or tens of thousands of monthly users). Thanks for the service to all the operators of which around 40 are in a loose group chat 💗

Your social web app: a zip file.
and
are spearheading ever new and more fun ways to deny power to servers and platform billionaires.
Unlike classic email servers, #chatmail relays do not store user identities which solely live on end-user devices. There also is no encrypted value on the server like with Proton Mail or Signal. There are only relays, endless federating networks of relays to onboard safely :)

#pinephone - Pleast boost for reach:
On the subject of Linux phone accessibility, the developer of AT-SPI wrote:
There's a long-standing issue that Joanie filed against at-spi2-core for
touch screen support:
Ande I haven't taken the time to figure out how best to handle this. I'm
not sure if evdev would do what we need, or we might want to work with the
maintainers of mutter, KWin, etc. to create a protocol for
intercepting/manipulating gestures. We would also need code that can
detect gestures from touch screen presses. NVDA has code that we might be
able to use as a model.
All of this is theoretically on my list of things to do. Of course, help
would be welcome if anyone else was able to take it on.
end quote
For blind people to switch to Linux on phones, we need to use the touch screen. If anyone can help with this, it would allow the blind to take one step closer to being capable of creating our own accessibility, our own environments, in the way that helps us most. See NVDA as a great example of how that goes.

Kim van Wyk - I spent a large chunk of today on part 2 of day 7 of #adventofcode. My final solution was 10 lines of Python and ran almost instantly, but to get there I had to iterate over several solutions that would need hours. As with every year, I find the exercises very helpful in reminding myself to explore several options when writing programs.
In this case, also a useful reminder that depth first and breadth first algorithms meet very different needs and that a dict's keys often trump a list.

Adrianna Pińska - Me every day for the past... several months: "I really need to tidy up my desk and sewing area; I can't work in this mess, and I can't find anything!"
My brain: "No! We're going to start three new projects, immediately lose them in this garbage pile, and then spend hours watching stupid videos."
Me this morning: "This is a really convenient time to go to the shops."
My brain: "No! We're going to tidy up the desk and sewing area *right now!*"
Me: "But-"
My brain: "And we're going to take a long detour to inventory and reorganise our electronic junk collection."
And that's how I ended up disassembling and (mostly) repairing a paper shredder in my pyjamas, and also why I now need to drive to the 24h vet for wet cat food so that my cat doesn't murder me.

Adrianna Pińska - There's no option in YouTube's settings to disable their uncanny valley AI audio translations across the board -- but apparently you can stop them from being selected automatically for videos in a language that you have added to your preferred languages. So guess who just clicked on *all* the language checkboxes, to "prefer" every human language in the list? I guess I'll have to wait and see if this stops the slop jumpscares.
(Yes, I could probably have automated it in JS, but figuring it out would have taken longer than just scrolling and clicking, and rage and spite are powerful motivators.)

Enron Hubbard - Woke up to water on my kitchen floor and the sound of running water coming from... somewhere. I eventually figured out the water line going to my refrigerator sprung a leak, cut the supply, and it stopped.
But I had this impulse to start searching the internet for answers as to where the water was coming from. As if there would magically be some forum post somewhere in which another person had the same issue in my kitchen and had the solution.
Lots of people do this - search elsewhere for a fix for something without really looking at it or thinking it through. I often do this when working on tech stuff, because those issues aren't readily apparent. Or I'll do it when developing a new skill to save time by avoiding trial-and-error. It's common and understandable in certain contexts because the Internet can be an amazing resource for learning things.
But this time it felt embarrassing. I had to face the reflexive impulse for cognitive offloading. Why bother expelling any energy on thinking when I could just ask The Machine? It tells me things that I want to know all the time. It must be omniscient.
It's been said that the internet is not a force for good or evil, but a force multiplier. That's definitely true, and by extension, "AI" is a force exponentiator. In my little plumbing escapade, instead of scrolling through pages of text, I could just have the Machine assemble a plausible-sounding response culled from the typing of billions of semi-clever monkeys.
Fortunately, I have no love whatsoever for LLMs and didn't even consider touching one. But I can see how other folks would immediately do exactly that without hesitation.
In this instance, it was laid bare to me just how much we are giving away to the Machine. Here, it was intelligence and cognition. In other realms, it's intimacy and belonging. Meaning and self-actualization. It feels like every year, the Machine (and Capitalism writ large) colonizes some basic human need and fundamental aspect of what it is to be a person.
And I just crossed over into being angry about it.

Something that stood out to me was how much easier it was to experiment with setting up a CI config. Rather than starting a branch with a million 'does this work?' commit messages, there is a web form that I could copy paste in my config and it would immediately run it. And then, when it failed, it popped up a little message saying "copy paste this into your terminal in the next 10 minutes to SSH into the build VM and poke around".

Have an idea for you: add the top 50/75/100 trending tv shows and movies to Spotlight using the search API, so when you search for “Survivor” it shows a result that deep links directly to the show page on Callsheet. I used to often search tv shows and movies this way, and then hit the IMDB link at the bottom to open that app. Would be cool to open Callsheet directly from a Spotlight search result.
