Movies!
movies i've watched and potentially some short thoughts on them
Re-Animator
creepy and actually pretty funny too. the "dr hill's decapitated corpse sexually assaults megan while his severed head watches" scene might have been a bit too much (and megan in general was kinda boring as a character) tho. great movie
The Fog
amazing atmosphere and vibes. John Carpenter is just really good as a director. i also really liked the way the movie is structured, bouncing between small groups of characters until they all come together to survive in the end.
From Beyond
what if the lovecraftian horrors beyond our comprehension made you not only crazy, but also really horny and into bdsm. i complained about the sexual assault in Re-Animator and like half of this movie is just that scene on repeat. i still liked it somewhat, the body horror is really good and the first scene where Crawford sucks out that doctor's eyeball and eats her brain is nightmare fuel but still liked it way, way less than Re-Animator
The Collector
decently fun torture horror movie. its Saw origins are very obvious but since i like the Saw movies i liked that. if i was to rank it amongst those id say its better than Saw IV but not as good as Saw III.
Cube
really great movie. the tension is great and they really made "we only have money for 1.5 small sets" into a big strength.
Eraserhead
everything in this movie is compelling in a way different from almost anything else i've ever seen. from the bizarre pacing of the dialogue early on where it almost feels like aftereach line the movie could just stop on that shot for the next hour, the sound design with its ever present sounds of steam and machinery, the way any concept of literality on the screen is just gone, the way Henry's actor portrays this constant sense of nervousness and awkwardness, some of the bizarre set decoration (henry having a framed picture of a nuclear explosion particularly caught my eye for some reason i do not quite understand). a scene in the ending almost made me actually scream, and if it wasn't for the fact that it was 1:00 as i watched i probably would have. i definitely feel like im nowhere near close to being able to actually interpret it, the sexual imagery is definitely really noticeable but it really feels like thinking of it through that lens alone leaves a lot out. having also very recently watched the original two seasons of twin peaks, that show (in particular its final episode) and this movie definitely make me understand truly how unique David Lynch's work is and why "Lynchian" is a term at all.
Ainda Estou Aqui
its a really, really good movie. the acting and cinematography are just perfect. there's just this amazing build-up of tension during the start of the movie and such a powerful feeling throughout the rest of it that i find really hard to find the right words for. this is maybe a bit outside of the movie itself, but the knowledge that there are so many people here who still full heartedly defend the military dictatorship and actively wish to bring it back is just, deeply depressing in a way.
