Notes After Recording
- My initial attempts kept producing a wicked hum
- Guitar into amp: ok, guitar into Pod/modeller: ok
- I independently checked amps, pedals, Pod, cables - all good
- After literal hours I realized the issue was running my USB audio interface on my laptop while plugged into a dock
- Plugged the laptop into the wall and all was good
- Made a basic and honestly not-great ambient recording
- (Making clunky things is fine, the key is to keep making things)
- Sustained tones with an EHX SuperEgo, using both a Strat and a J-Bass, warble via Shallow Water
- I think this is the first time my partner's bass amp has been used in 17 years
- Figured out how to (mostly) de-noise the track with Reaper
- Speaking of which, finally bought a Reaper license (buy the software you use!)
- There's still some weird noise on the track I can't get rid of
- My USB audio interface just bit the biscuit, so I can't continue
- It's an M-Audio Fast Track from like, 2008?, and is so old that it's not compatible with Windows 10
- I bought it when I was first writing songs and had the idea I was going to record them
- (Yeah, I never did)
- But, gear is gear, right? It worked for a while, and then it didn't
- I'm off to L&M tomorrow before rehearsal to pick up a suitable replacement
- (Ideally, one compatible with a decade-old OS)
- Reminds me of the first time I brewed: it was a disaster, spilled wort everywhere, and after I cleaned up, I made immediate plans to try again, to not let myself be defeated
- This feels a little like the same
- Back on the horse
