I'm Tired of Living in Interesting Times
There's a lot not to like about Trudeau - his political instincts aren't always great; domestically, he's a mess (see: housing, electoral reform); and there are no small number of scandals to pick from, either before he became Prime Minister (blackface Aladdin) or after (SNC Lavalin, WE Charity scandal, etc).
But in terms of foreign policy, in terms of crisis, he feels like a top-tier Prime Minister, maybe the best I can think of in my lifetime. During COVID, he was the leader the country needed, and now, staring down a truculent United States bent on annexing the country, he's back in his element.
I just finished watching his speech on my phone, then took the dogs for a long walk in the bitter cold. Trudeau's right: this is about weakening Canada to try to take it over, and it's coming from a country that used to be our closest ally. No sugarcoating it, it's a betrayal, and one that can't simply be walked back, even if it is.
It's hard to put into words my anger right now, the idea that millions of lives could be at stake because of one deeply stupid and unqualified man. The coming years are going to be difficult. And this weekend I'm going to go get a bottle of absolutely top-shelf (Canadian) whisky for when he finally dies.
