i'm a christian. grew up in a christian home, always have and probably always will be a staunch christian.

i also have generally (since i was old enough to evaluate these things consciously) been pretty strongly against most methods that i see people using to preach the word - almost always they come across as being patronising, manipulative, or at the very least just incredibly annoying.

anyways, a couple days ago i was at a muslim friend's home for the first time, and his mother hit me hard with the "you should convert, i really don't want you to go to hell" line.

it was a very new experience, being on the receiving end of that. the condescending laugh when i tried to explain that i was christian, the looks that said "oh this poor misguided youth" in every way except through words; the attitude of "i just want what's best for you"; throwing hell in my face in lieu of a greeting.

all of these things may or may not have been exacerbated by the fact that it is now ramadan, and i was invited to their home to break the fast together with them.

all in all, it was a very eye-opening time.

and now i can say from first-hand experience, these methods of preaching really are objectively quite bad, by any metric. i have no problem if they want to tell me about what they believe, just not like that.

in any case, i'm glad for the experience. this story, among other things that happened there, has given me much to think about.
