25/02/27 - on yearly upgrades
it recently occurred to me that i really don't understand the mentality of yearly phone upgrades at all.
now i'm not even talking about the companies and their dubious claims of innovation here. i just can't wrap my head around the fact that there are people who not only change phones every year, but that actually want new phones annually.
i tend to put a fair amount of effort and time into configuring my devices until they function like an extension of my forearm. it can get to where it feels like my thoughts flow directly into the device, and so i can do whatever i like unobstructed by interfaces.
a direct consequence of this is, of course, that every time i change devices, it feels like i've been evicted from my warm, inviting house, and left homeless in a country that i don't know.
i have changed phones (quite unwillingly) 4 times now. every time it takes anywhere from a couple weeks to upwards of a month to bend the new phone to my will. maybe it's because my phone is one of the few constants in a very unstable and uncertain world, but i can't imagine willingly going through that every year.
