It’s actually book two that begins with the paragraph about dealing with “assholes.” It’s not necessarily that they’re trying to be that way, but that they cannot help themselves. So don’t stoop to their level (“No one can implicate me in ugliness”).

He goes on to talk about not getting angry at relatives, he’s being metaphorical in that all humans are relatives.
