the roles of philosphy and religion

[Philosophy] was not merely a subject to write or argue about, but one that was expected to provide a “design for living” – a set of rules to live one’s life by. Hays, 2003. p. xiv

This passage is well into the introduction and precedes an explanation that ancient religion had more to do with rituals and less to do with doctrine.

The purpose of philosophy was to provide moral and ethical guidelines, not religion.
