03:11 schestowitz[TR2]; It sure sounds like AK has taken the Kyndryl model to heart. 8% on shore for services. NOTE manufacturing wouldnt be included in that number as plants and equipment are sunk costs. Everything else near or off shore. If true, that says hes aiming for a USA headcount of 288 x .08 = 23k PLUS manufacturing (POK, RST, AUSTIN, Tucson, Albany, and perhaps the labs) so maybe 10-12k = 35k total

05:16 schestowitz[TR2]; Apptio is a symtom of what is wrong with the CIO and IBM
05:16 schestowitz[TR2]; IBM acquired Apptio, which they considered to be among the top five or six options they reviewed. Its likely that Apptios sales team painted a very rosy picture for our executives, promising unprecedented transparency into team operations, the ability to identify inefficient teams, and traceability from high-level executive OKRs down to individual Jira tickets. Naturally, Arvind was thrilled at the prospect of this newfound i
05:16 schestowitz[TR2]; nsight, perhaps even imagining it would make workforce reductions easier to manage.
05:16 schestowitz[TR2]; However, it seems no one involved in the decision-making process conducted a proper user experience study with objective feedback. Now, almost 13 months post-acquisition, Apptio still lacks user role management, leaving sensitive financial information accessible to everyone. This oversight has forced IBM to restrict access solely to management, a far cry from the comprehensive visibility and utility the leadership envisioned and so
05:16 schestowitz[TR2]; ld to lower-level managers like myself.
05:16 schestowitz[TR2]; IBM does this time and time again with so many companies we buy. I know rank and file employees are frustrated with the tools we take away and are forced to use. But I am helpless to do anything about it.

05:18 schestowitz[TR2]; You want an explanation that makes sense?
05:18 schestowitz[TR2]; IBM is out of money.
05:18 schestowitz[TR2]; There's your explanation. As IBM cut staff and sold off division after division, they ran themselves out of breathing room to manage their finances. In other words, they can't cook the books anymore.
05:18 schestowitz[TR2]; IBM now has to act like any startup, because they now have the finances of a startup. Every employee has to pull their weight (financially), and if they can't make it they're out the door.

10:08 schestowitz[TR2]; The people laying you off are 5 levels above you and see you as a line in an Excel sheet. They see you merely as cost, rather than what you achieve for the company. And when, in 12 months time, when we're making less money - they'll fire more vital 'costs' in response. IBM are experts at repeatedly cannibalising itself to give the perception of long profitability.
10:08 schestowitz[TR2]; It can't last forever, but the markets only see last quarter and next quarter. We're led by that, rather than anyone with any vision.

10:09 schestowitz[TR2]; Give it time, it will eventually happen. Managers with zero or few direct reports are sometimes (but not always) given a choice: Switch to a non-managerial position of equal or possibly even lower band, or take their chances. If they take their chances, they are usually RA'd at the next quarter.

10:09 schestowitz[TR2]; However, the managers will have fewer reports (or no reports) to do the job in less than 30 days. Panic setting in ??
10:09 schestowitz[TR2]; And... they should be ready for the axe when it comes down again, because Alvind is gonna make sure the blade is going to sweep lower and cut more heads in the next round. You can run but you cannot hide, so get out while you still can with your heads and limbs intact.

10:10 schestowitz[TR2]; Youre right, corporations dont have a soul. Most people in todays world have the same mentality as that comment that asked why youd stay at a company for 26 years. I just passed my 25th anniversary this year and the number of teams and projects Ive been on have varied so much it was almost like I worked at 10 different companies. I think what surprises me more is that there are people like me who chose to stay with I

10:10 schestowitz[TR2]; I really do not want to sound offensive. I understand getting laid off is a stressful thing. But, why did you stay at IBM for such a long time, i.e., 26 years? There have been so many good new companies that have risen during that time. Why did you never switch and try to gain some new different experience? Maybe you preferred to stay in your comfort zone too long?
10:10 schestowitz[TR2]; Again sorry about all those people getting laid off, but I really believe staying 26 years in one company is way too long, especially knowing that the company has not been doing very well over the past few decades.

10:10 schestowitz[TR2]; I am hearing IBM is targeting bands 8 and 9 for the layoffs. This might explain why they are only hiring at band 7 or less in the global markets. Guessing each of the market General Managers have known about this RA for quite some time and that is why the band 7 or lower hire mandate was in place.

17:24 schestowitz[TR2]; IBM isn't really going all in on AI. Look, we don't have a single product internally that's able to do the jobs of the people we laid off earlier this year. AskHR is a joke; AskIbm is a technology demo that does not do a single useful thing - and is completely hampered by stinginess and a lack of imagination. The latter su-ks beyond all belief.
17:24 schestowitz[TR2]; Arvind is all-in on moving as many jobs as he can, including more jobs than he should, to India. AI allows him to generate propaganda for technology we do not yet have, to bump the stock price up while he executes his real strategy. He has no imagination, no vision, no talent; he is looking simply to get the stock as high as be can before he dumps it. He will leave IBM far worse than he found it.

21:39 schestowitz[TR2]; After 24 years with IBM I nearly lost my job at IBM last year due to low sales in 2022 when my territory had a high sales rep turnover and as a tech sales specialist I rely on sales reps to find new opps so we can work together to close them. I have great empathy for those impacted by this layoff.
21:39 schestowitz[TR2]; I hearken back to what I was taught in business school that the sole purpose of corporations is to increase value to the shareholders, no shareholders, no company.
21:39 schestowitz[TR2]; That said, I think many cuts I've seen over the years have been done without consideration of skills of those they cut, which over the long haul reduces shareholder value because without an experienced and skilled workforce, productivity decreases.
21:39 schestowitz[TR2]; During the Palmisano and Rometty years there were massive layoffs primarily in the US to fund share buybacks. In the short term this increases stock prices, but its akin to burning the furniture to keep your house warm. They were also responding to changes in the global markets where IBM increased hiring in APAC where potential growth was increasing and reduced headcount in the US where growth was waning.
