I'm old and new at the same time. Old on the internet, I've witnessed a lot, from dial-up BBS'es to ubiquitous social media changing political landscapes. Now I'm just a green newbie on this newfangled Gemini thing. It's a strange feeling. I think I like it.

@defaultflavored Ah, I true. I remembe the vibrant colored ANSI art! And the games: Usurper, Legend of the Red Dragon... · 2 weeks ago

BBSs were varied. You had the small BBSs you and your friends setup with 15 people on it. You had the local big BBS with a few hundred, whose sysop you knew and sometimes hung out with. Then you had the huge BBSs you heard about in philes or via networked door games. BBSs were more interactive than Gemini, and had more resources: messaging, games, files, chat. Gemini is basically blogs, twitter (station) and reddit (bubble), with a few barely used games. BBSs were also more graphically interesting and colorful due to ANSI. Gemini is more limited. On the other hand, Gemini is also young. BBSs took years to develop and grow into what they ended up being. · 2 months ago

And it was a VERY different world, socio-technologically wise. It was so bright and full of wonder and promises. Nowadays, it's all so.... *vaguely gestures at everything* · 2 months ago

@half_elk_monk, I was VERY young back then, barely 10 - 12 years old, so to me it was less the discussion aspect and more the discovery, almost in a trailblazing fashion, uncovering a promising brave new world. I definitely would be working in a different sector and probably would be a different person in many aspects if not for it. · 2 months ago

It was a different world though. · 2 months ago

Does gemini feel like a BBS? I imagine many BBSes had a larger pool of people talking. As a more-newbie, I kinda wonder what dialup BBSes were like, socially speaking · 2 months ago
