Looking at the network in general I have an open question, do you think that hate messages have irreversibly polluted the network?

Btw Psyko I appreciate you having all these little questions to give something for the peeps to talk about ^_^ · 6 months ago
@dsilverz, I have a theory that the big tech companies are interested in generating hate, why? I launch a hate message, you respond, another responds and so on, generating a continuous flow of “message-response” that makes the user stay more in one place. If we do a quick sum we see that "sites with many users = advertising = economic benefits”.Even on Youtube (to give a generic example) you find attack-hate messages. Regarding AI, tools are already appearing to “hinder” its use, even with an ad blocker you can block the results in some searches (or logically change the search engine) 😃 · 6 months ago
The big social media sites: yeah probably - they thrive on hate and outrage and use it to drive user interaction because it IS a very powerful motivator, so it pays for them to show everyone content that's sure to create that outrage. Elsewhere: no, not really. I agree with Ruby that the majority of the net is fine, either because of moderation and/or actual community building, or because the goal straight up isn't the exchange of opinions. · 6 months ago
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Social media is not the network. I haven't visited any social media sites outside of Gemini and a bi-monthly checking of Mastodon in several years. There's plenty of content out there on the internet without being exposed to random people's (or even your friend's) stupid bullshit. On the regular 'network', if you're not looking for hate, you won't find hate.
Answer as unrelated as the previous two posters: Who asked about AI? Sorry, it's just that I find complaining about AI to be every bit as much the 'flavor of the month' as AI itself is. · 6 months ago
Also dsilverz makes a good statement about the trend corporations such as Facebook and Google doing with AI. Google is prioritizing AI summarization on the first page which seems to be driving away traffic from other sites. Facebook encourages AI slop images to proliferate across its platforms getting grandparents of the world to spread even more nonsense. Even conversations across the net are being automated by chatbots. Theoretically the text you are currently seeing could of been a simple copy and paste that was spewed out by an AI. · 6 months ago
Assuming that you referring to the main web. I think it is dependent on a variety of variables. Such as how much moderation is enforced? What level of anonymity is provided? Are users seeking to create outrage? How easy is it to create a disposable account? What type of topics are encouraged and etc.? I can't speak for all imageboards , but you tend to find some nasty stuff fester within those forums. While it is more unlikely that you will find such wretched discourse going on in a subreddit forum dedicated to gardening. · 6 months ago
At least in hegemonic networks, yes. I see people entering there always in a defensive state. · 6 months ago
