Open question: Let's make it a little difficult, so what do you think are the 3 biggest problems/errors on the Internet today?

1. Mass surveillance and general misuse

2. Compatibility (why does most of the web need to be written in JS‽)

3. To quote someone on Twitter, the modern web is four websites full of screenshots from the other three. · 6 months ago

Surveilance and big corporations have already been mentioned, so I'll throw in that the people regulating it have no idea what it is or how it works. Meaning things like our lawmakers. At least here in the US, the average congresspserson is typically in their late 60's or older, and doesn't really understand the internet or how it works. This often leads to them making very poor decisions about things regarding the internet, data privacy, etc. And that hurts everyone. It's part of why we're in the pickle we're in today. Especially here where the dollar is king and people wand businesses with fat wallets have so much control over our lawmakers. · 6 months ago

surveillance, the fact most people wouldn't casually walk through an active warzone on the daily (given the choice) yet that's effectively what you're doing everyday just by been connected to the internet, current over reliance on web/cloud services and the push by governments to increase that reliance even though despite it's conception as a resilient network it's become highly centralized and become pretty vulnerable to intteruption if we're honest. · 6 months ago

I can offer one. If you're asking for subjective responses: heaviness and bloat, for lack of better terms. Websites have so much needless shit that just makes the experience painful. I'm new to "alternate protocols", but I'm enjoying my time on Gemini and Gopher. Much faster and more responsive. Takes some time getting used to the format, but I like it.

I switched form Windows to Linux several years ago and have been consistently taking steps to debloat my systems. And I will say, imo, it is a better experience. · 6 months ago
