With the whole "we want to look into your encrypted chat" coming our way, I keep thinking about an IOS/Android app that runs on the same phone as WhatsApp/Signal and pre-encrypts your chats, then uses the WhatsApp/Signal app to send your message to your friend with whom you are talking. Then on the other side the same app decrypts etc. You only have to have a shared secret with one of your friends and then the government can decrypt the WhatsApp/Signal thing all they want. They will never see the real messages. Only Metadata will be known: who talks to whom, when and at what frequency. What do y'all think of this? You could use QR/Camera for secret transfer.

@fripster - thank you. Is there a particular law or ordinance coming up that spells out how they plan to do this? · 2 months ago

@half_elf_monk: The EU and probably many other governments are gearing up to get access to our encrypted chats under the pretense of that being good for security safety.. we all know that is not about security at all but about control. So I would like to have tools to mitigate that… hope this helps! · 2 months ago

Help catch me up... how is it that they're going to look at encrypted chats? · 2 months ago

personally i think that things like encrypted bitchat can be the answer cause i think that short-distance networks (specially like bluetooth and/or local wifi networks working over real LAN without centralization, exactly like bluetooth but with a bit bigger range) are hard to catch cause of physical decentralization and thus such apps could exist with encryption (eventually that as an addon but who will catch someone in a bus using bluetooth? it could be even headphones…). idk but that just my personal thought… and yep, pairing devices via qr code is good and used even now, for example by signal or snapchat (tfu!). you can send whole files via qr codes rn · 2 months ago
