Challenge
After years of challenges with Ubiquity gateways (UDM, UDM Pro, UDM Pro Max) and their lovely AP6&7, I've grown tired of their software. The OS seems to do everything you would ever want but often buttons simply don't work. The background job fails when switches are changed. The log files leave a lot to be desired and online forums are filled with "switch the section back on and then unclick the box and then switch it back". Every update becomes a fear based decision. Apps don't restart. The APs don't reassign automatically and I'm left on a ladder holding reset buttons for 10 seconds. They aren't prosumer, they're antisumer devices.
Upgrade
I'd heard a lot of good things about Firewalla and specifically their customer support so I purchased the following equipment:
- Firewalla Gold Pro
- Gold Pro Rack Mount Kit
- Firewalla AP7 Desktop
In order to get setup properly I decided to rack mount everything in a larger wall rack:
- StarTech 2-Post 6U Adjustable is great for me since I expect to use half and quarter size equipment.
- StarTech 8 Outlet PDU - yes, yes, surge is pointless. I get it. It's a cheap strip and I'll probably add an APC down the line.
- TP-Link TL-SX1008 which is an 8 port 10G Unmanaged switch. I prefer unmanaged for the house when there's an upstream security device like the FGP.
My house has been seeing a little over 2054 Mb/s with the above setup. Not too shabby.
