About Gemsync
Gemini is easy to browse as a client but difficult to host as a server. To have a capsule of you own, you need to build an Internet-addressable machine, set up and configure server software, create a certificate, manage routing and uptime, and so on. The technical barrier is high, both in terms of knowledge and resources.
There are a few services that host Gemini capsules for users, but most of them also require some degree of technical know-how. Users need to understand SSH, command lines, key management, and other tools.
Gemsync is an experimental project to make Gemini hosting as simple as possible. It serves Gemini capsules using Syncthing, a file-sharing program that is fully decentralized and private.
Syncthing-based hosting offers several advantages:
- No knowledge about CLIs or technical tools is required. You manage your Gemini capsule like you would any other folder on your device. Simply install and run Syncthing and add your capsule folder.
- You keep a complete, up-to-date local copy of your Gemini capsule. Syncthing copies everything to every device you connect to it. If Gemsync ever goes offline, you don't lose any data.
- Your Gemini capsule updates quickly. Syncthing uses multiple relays to send data to Gemsync. Changes are usually visible within seconds.
- Syncthing is compatible with Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. You can manage and update your Gemini capsule using several devices. Gemsync will directly connect to up to 3 Syncthing devices, but you can share the folder among as many of your own devices as you wish.
When you request an account with Gemsync, you receive a Syncthing request to add a shared folder with 50 MiB of storage. Gemsync will share this folder with up to 3 Syncthing devices of your own. Simply add any files you like to the shared folder, and they will automatically be sent to Gemsync's Syncthing server, where they will become visible on Gemini.
Please be aware that Gemsync is an experimental service. There might be unexpected downtime, and things might break without warning. I will try to fix them as soon as I can.
