I watched an interesting video today.

“Let me help you escape the endless scroll” by Linkard

In it, the creator suggests a solution to the algorithm-provided endless feed as a means to discover new content. He suggested replacing it with human-curated lists of content. He also suggested that a great way to make your own lists, as well as find them, is by browsing the Indie Web.

Indie Web

Isn’t Gemspace also the Indie Web? It’s your own site. Human made, human controlled. No frills, no ads or trackers.

Sounds great. Linkard also suggested Neocities as a good place to explore indie websites. Now there’s a name that rings a bell. I started a whole bunch of shitty GeoCities websites back in the day, played with the themes, wrote some crap, and then forgot the password. But what I made was mine! It was fun, too, learning how it all worked.

Magnificent. So retro. It really does remind me of the early internet.

Well, I think that it’d be fun to make a list of content over here too, so that’s today’s topic.

Garrett’s Adventure

Alone in a Desert Paradise

I found this channel only last month, and I’ve watched plenty already. It’s a young dude, maybe he’s 20 now, and he’s sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti and onto Fiji, alone. That takes some serious balls.

Watching his vids, you get a feel for what sailing’s like. Some days you’re making plenty of progress. Others, you’re floating around going nowhere. Some nights, you’re making progress too, instead of sleep. Well, that doesn’t sound great for me, but it is quite fun to watch.

Garrett’s videos are quite minimalist. He doesn’t make a script, nor does he try to sensationalise anything. It’s very raw, and it really works. A pure vlog, about sailing.

Philosophy Tube

Are You Rational? Pt. 1

I discovered this channel not long ago too. I was looking for videos to prime me on Nietzsche before starting to read his works, and I was also interested in learning about Marxism and Communism to see how much I agree with those ideas. The videos on Philosophy Tube are well thought out. You can tell that they’re well researched.

There was also a really great video on logic and how to deconstruct someone’s argument to understand what points they’re asking, which is a very valuable skill.

Philosophy Tube also has a video on transsexuality (the creator came out as trans in a video) and whilst I personally have very little to do with transsexuality, being neither trans nor knowing anyone trans, it was quite insightful to learn about how it all works, so to speak, and what experiences Abigail has had.

I Switched to a Dumb Phone, 2 Year Check In

Another channel I found recently. It stood out to me because of the channel name, that to me seems like a key element of Nietzsche’s philosophy. But despite how it might sound, the host is quite cheerful. I’m quite interested in dumb phones these days: I feel increasingly frustrated that I catch myself zombie-ing out to my phone. Plus I really miss that phones themselves had personality. Slide out fuckin’ keyboards, where are they now?

Through this guy, I learned the history of cookies. Plus, did you know Firefox was made by Mozilla, a company started by the guys who made Netscape Navigator, the first browser? Mozilla has some of the most comprehensive docs for JavaScript for front end. No wonder - they were there when it began!

Parting Words

I’ll leave it at three for now, so it gives me more of a reason to come back and add more.

I think each of these channels might stand out to the users of Gemspace. Next time I’ll try to put in some of my favourite maker channels! I hope I can also stumble upon some other human-created content lists on Gemspace. I’ll look forward to it.
