Murray Bookchin, noted pencilneck nerd, loved to decry so-called "lifestylists", that is people who lived out their values rather than bloviating from the comfort of their easy chair. His rationale was that these lifesylists put their personal identities over class struggle (one might recognize the familiar ring of the modern internet CHUD bugbear, Identity politics in that explanation and that was not accidental on my part).
What this really boils down to is that murray bookchin was bitchmade and too afraid to fully detach himself from the comforts of the modern bourgeois capitalist state apparatus. No more twinkies and dingdongs for the fatty mcfatty Murray Bookdoublechin. And thus, the Bookchin effort was put towards intellectualizing and theoretical pontification (a favorite of the liberal establishment and limpwrist academics the world over. The fact that Bookchin was neither part of the establishment nor an academic doesn't seem to have stopped him in reaching towards that golden throne of shit however). and thus, the legacy of the modern internet leftist was born; we don't do anything to escape the tentacles of the neoliberal hegemony, we don't remove ourselves from the apparatus and we definitely do not help others to liberate themselves from the apparatus; we piss and moan on twitter and facebook and reddit and *insert dumb clone here*. We post memes. we make videos on youtube. we do not build actual alternatives, we talk about how we would build alternatives. or, even better, we talk about how we would talk about how we would build alternatives. The do-nothing politics of late cyber-capitalism; shitposts and dank maymays and "content".
