What should leasehold campaign priorities be in 2025?
I attended the FreeLeaseholders meetup at London Bridge this week.
A lot of the energy in the room was around individual block-by-block disputes. But I was asked "what should be next?" at the national level. The context was more about research than campaigning. What is it that we need to *work out* now?
Roughly, I think the answer is:
- relief for residential long leaseholders in blocks that cannot feasibly be enfranchised or RTMed
- fix the market failure for equity loans to finance enfranchisement of blocks of flats
- what safeguards are needed in any regime of regulating property managing agents
This is based on the assumption that the government will publish a draft bill on leasehold and commonhold reform this calendar year, but will not introduce it in Parliament until 2028.
