Powered by the modern Wayland Linux graphics platform and ported to the latest Qt 6 open-source application framework, the KDE Plasma 6 desktop environment introduces initial HDR (High Dynamic Range) support, support for color blindness correction filters, and a new look and feel with floating panel by default.

KDE Plasma 6 also introduces a new Overview effect that combines the old Overview and Desktop Grid effects to offer improved support for touchpad gestures, reintroduces the famous Cube effect, and overhauls the Breeze theme for a more modern look with fewer frames and more consistent spacing.

After months of anticipation, what the KDE team is calling the Megarelease 6 has arrived, complete with new versions of the underlying KDE Frameworks 6.0 and the separately numbered KDE Gear 24.02 suite of applications.
The Plasma 6.0 desktop is Wayland-native, and in line with Red Hat's plans to drop X.org, Fedora plans to offer Plasma 6 only on Wayland. This won't be the case on all distros, though, as the announcement says...

KDE Release Party in Nürnberg

↺ KDE Release Party in Nürnberg
Last night SUSE invited to their new Nürnberg offices at the Franken Campus in the city’s south for a KDE MegaRelease 6 release party. There were around 25 people from KDE, SUSE, and owncloud, with a good portion of non-contributors meeting some of the people behind their favorite desktop environment and suite of applications in-person for the first time.

The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6

↺ The KDE desktop gets an overhaul with Plasma 6
It's been nearly 10 years since KDE Plasma 5, which is the last major release of the desktop. On February 28 the project announced its "mega release" of KDE Plasma 6, KDE Frameworks 6, and KDE Gear 24.02 — all based on the Qt 6 development framework. This release focuses heavily on migrating to Wayland, and aspires to be a seamless upgrade for the user while improving performance, security, and support for newer hardware. For developers, a lot of work has gone into removing deprecated frameworks and decreasing dependencies to make it easier to write applications targeting KDE.
