step 2b. connect to an IRC server

another client that expects to have a handful of servers setup, but can still be asked to connect without configuration.

/server -ssl irc.thebackupbox.net 6697

step 3. join a channel

/join #default

that's literally it.

step 4. off-the-record (optional if you trust the server operator)

if you are on debian, you're in luck, there's a debian package for the hexchat OTR (off the record) plugin.

should be able to:

apt-get install hexchat-otr

To get it going

/otr start
/otr start
/otr start
/otr auth something

then the other side needs to "auth" the same something

and you should get some messages about OTR
