Nostalgia, or Lack Thereof

↺ Nostalgia, or Lack Thereof
I went out to see Alien: Romulus with the friends last night, and while I genuinely enjoy being with friends, the film itself left me a bit cold. It wasn't bad in a conventional sense--it was competently directed and acted, but seriously--I've seen this movie before! Literally, in some cases, as some scenes and dialogue were just lifted wholesale from previous films. The entire thing felt faintly poisoned by nostalgia.
Industries crave money, and apparently the movie money is now in squeezing Gen X's 'formative IP' (what a nightmare phrase!) until it is a dry husk. So I understand why a painfully tottering Harrison Ford (or his AI-generated double) gets dragged out for yet another Indiana Jones tale. What I don't understand is why these cynical, flavorless entertainment extrusions still have an audience.

Crème Fraîche

↺ Crème Fraîche
Crème fraîche is not sold in the US. There is sour cream, which can't really be cooked, and heavy cream which is less thick and doesn't taste the same. That's a real problem given than it's used in a fair amount of French dishes, and probably about 90% of Norman ones.

Gemlog Has Been Split

↺ Gemlog Has Been Split
Just popping in for a real quick note that I’ve split up my old Gemlog into three separate blogs: projects, personal, and “pagan”. The stuff related to my projects has been moved to my HTTPS site, which is where the old posts have ended up, and where new posts like that will go from now on:

Changelog

↺ Changelog
What to discuss? Some developers will be lazy, and will not maintain a changelog, or if there is one, it will simply mention to go look at CVS or Fossil or whatever as shown by the line above. I've certainly been guilty of this, usually in smaller repositories where there is not much to summarize. There can be advantages to not maintained a changelog, as one need not spend time summarizing the repository changes into a changelog or release notes file, and repository tools (if you know how to use them) offer selection by date ranges, branch, etc. Disadvantages are that folks may need to download a whole repository, or to learn some web interface, just to find out what changed in the latest release. This is perhaps similar to speaking where the audience may want more or different detail, while the speaker may not want to say all that, especially if documenting things is not really a skill they have developed.
