02:01 DaemonFC; It's funny because in the US, you buy gas in gallons and measure engine displacements in liters.

02:10 schestowitz; DaemonFC: what about time measures?

02:10 DaemonFC; You'd get from one end of a door frame and to the other end and there'd be a 5/8" difference.

02:11 schestowitz; DST it to me most irrational
02:11 DaemonFC; So I took a saw and cut it out about another 4".

02:12 schestowitz; from a server POV, you must deal with the same tiime happening twice

02:12 DaemonFC; I was banging my head on the thing because I needed another 2" clearance.
02:12 DaemonFC; So I made it four because that took it nearly to the ceiling and made sure almost nobody in the future would have this problem again.

02:34 DaemonFC; People on Amazon are great, aren't they?
02:34 schestowitz; i would not try
02:34 schestowitz; the backup filter is hard to replace
02:34 DaemonFC; One put head gasket sealer in her BMW and then drove around with it.
02:34 schestowitz; they tend to be proprietary
02:34 DaemonFC; Until the engine threw a piston rod directly into the hood.
02:34 DaemonFC; :D
02:34 schestowitz; and if subjected to too much 'browning' they would restrict the drip
02:34 DaemonFC; MinceR: ^
02:35 DaemonFC; Head gasket sealers have VERY specific directions.
02:35 DaemonFC; You're supposed to drain the coolant out, remove the thermostat and re-attach the housing, then pour the stuff in with a radiator full of water and IDLE the car for a couple hours.
02:36 DaemonFC; Then you turn off the car, drain the water and residual solution, and then re-install the thermostat and fill it with water/antifreeze and bleed the air.
02:37 DaemonFC; The intermediate step is because the stuff has to flow into the hole in the blown head gasket, get heated by engine heat, and form this sort of "cement" to fill the gap.
02:38 DaemonFC; But it doesn't mix with coolant and if you drive around like that it'll get into the piston where it shouldn't go while the engine is running at higher RPMs.
02:38 DaemonFC; ChrisFix did fix his dad's head gasket leak and his dad was able to drive his Jaguar around for about another 4 years before it was a problem again.
02:38 DaemonFC; And that's much less work than a new gasket, which comes out to thousands of dollars at a shop on an old car.
02:39 DaemonFC; Another 4 years is amazing for a $40 bottle of stuff off Amazon or at the car parts store.
02:39 DaemonFC; If the car is 20 years old, has little value, and you're going to have to junk it now.
02:41 DaemonFC; schestowitz: Yeah, my mom buries her coffee alive under sweetened creamers and flavorings.
02:42 DaemonFC; So if the coffee underneath it all is absolute dogshit, she wouldn't know.
02:42 schestowitz; sounds like it
02:42 DaemonFC; Keurig pods don't make good coffee.
02:42 schestowitz; btw, we use the used coffee stuff in the garden
02:42 schestowitz; they say it is good compost/fertiliser
02:42 DaemonFC; But if you're pouring in "Nestle Italian Sweet Cream" then that hides a lot of sin.
02:42 schestowitz; with capsules i suppose it's a lot of work
02:42 schestowitz; also a source of waste
02:43 schestowitz; all that aluminum stuff
02:43 DaemonFC; You can pull the aluminum lid off and dump the coffee out.
02:43 schestowitz; DaemonFC: lots of small ones
02:43 schestowitz; and then still waste
02:43 schestowitz; it's aa waste industry
02:43 schestowitz; like those plastic bottles thing

02:52 DaemonFC; Trying to make coffee with a 4, 6, and 9 ounce set of buttons but enough coffee for a 6 ounce cup in the pod is the same as putting enough coffee for 6 cups in an auto drip then filling it to 4 cups or 9 cups if you want to.
02:52 DaemonFC; Two of the choices lead to really nasty coffee.
02:52 DaemonFC; So why does the K-Cup brewer have more choices than the coffee grounds in the capsule allow for?
02:53 DaemonFC; No matter what you do, there's not enough coffee in there to be up to SCA standards.
02:53 DaemonFC; But that's fine because the default brew speed isn't up to SCA standards either.
02:54 DaemonFC; You can at least fix that part by hitting "Strong" every time.
02:55 DaemonFC; So it's meant for a 6 ounce cup at less than the SCA recommendation, so if you brew 4 ounces and at Strong, you can fill a mug with two K-Cups, and running the machine twice and it will be at the recommended strength of the SCA. Roughly.
02:55 DaemonFC; What's wrong with this picture?

03:00 DaemonFC; schestowitz: So they don't admit that in addition to being 75 cents a pod, you need two of them and go through this whole thing twice a cup pressing buttons.
03:00 DaemonFC; There's methods where you get strong coffee with less off it, but that always comes at the cost of overextraction.
03:01 DaemonFC; Like a percolator or french press.
03:01 DaemonFC; Some of the better percolators have better temperature control units.
03:02 DaemonFC; They can beat out a lot of the auto drip units, but the whole thing is more of a "fuck it mentality" on the part of the auto drip machine designs.
03:02 DaemonFC; So they'll get you used to horrible coffee with those cheap auto drip makers. Then you try a percolator, it's better than that drip machine you were using.
03:03 DaemonFC; So you're seeing percolators on the market again, and I'd say it's like the comeback of vinyl records.

04:00 DaemonFC; schestowitz: I didn't stop and think about Nespresso pods cost based on how much coffee is in them.

04:01 DaemonFC; They had one in Warehouse deals I liked.
04:01 schestowitz; i filled up my cabinets with tea and coffe for less than that

04:01 DaemonFC; Many of them busted.
04:02 DaemonFC; *Zojirushi
04:03 DaemonFC; The Contigo one I hate the least keeps my coffee warm enough that as long as I drink it within about 30-40 minutes I'm okay.
04:03 DaemonFC; Mandy likes to buy a lot of junk instead of one good thing.
04:03 DaemonFC; Then even if it breaks, if he knows I tossed it, it's World War III.
04:04 DaemonFC; Zojirushi says theirs has a locking lid, the lid comes apart so you can clean each piece properly, and the inside is easy to clean because they have some sort of stain-resistant coating, and that it keeps "tea" piping hot for up to 6 hours.
04:05 DaemonFC; Like most, that probably means "drinkable" for several more.
04:05 DaemonFC; You extend how long it can do that by preheating it with hot water.
04:06 DaemonFC; I don't use boiling. It's easier to just turn the tap on hot. The landlord keeps the hot at 145 F for some reason.
04:06 DaemonFC; Not boiling hot, but hot enough to scald.
04:06 DaemonFC; Much less of a temperature loss than going from hot 200 degree coffee to a room temperature (68 F right now) carafe.
04:07 DaemonFC; Going to a room temperature carafe starts your coffee out at about 180 F from the Moccamaster.
04:08 DaemonFC; Preheating the carafe to 145 with the tap and letting it soak for a minute and dumping the water and starting the machine has the coffee start out being held at 188 F.
04:08 DaemonFC; That's only a 12 degree loss.
04:08 DaemonFC; I doubt I'd do a lot better than that if I took the effort to boil some, and I'd have to pay for the electric to do that.
04:10 DaemonFC; It helps keep my coffee hotter if I sneak some into the movies or whatnot.
04:11 DaemonFC; Sometimes if we head out somewhere at breakfast I make my own coffee and slip it into a McDonalds or something.
04:11 DaemonFC; Why pay them over $2 for some nasty ass McDonald's coffee?

09:01 DaemonFC; Most European countries that had a claim on parts of what is now the United States had tenuous claims at best, laughable ones at worst.
09:01 DaemonFC; The British were of course the major problem and once they were dealt with, it was only a matter of time before the march west happened fairly rapidly.
09:04 DaemonFC; The Louisiana Purchase was more or less a small payoff to avert a war that nobody really wanted. Especially the French.
09:04 DaemonFC; To the United States, it was much cheaper than declaring a war on France and taking it.
