beginning of new day, December 18
00:00 DaemonFC; I said, "Just pour a bottle of Techron in a near empty gas tank and fill up and drive it back down to near E and gas up if you want to clean anything in the fuel system. The dealer pours a bottle of "Toyota fuel system cleaner" in the tank and it's just a $10 bottle of Techron. They buy it from Chevron. You can look at the MSDS. It's got PEA in it, same as Techron."
00:00 DaemonFC; MinceR, GM doesn't fuck you that bad.
00:00 DaemonFC; Delco Fuel System Cleaner Plus - Gasoline is about $18 a bottle on Amazon.
00:00 DaemonFC; But Chevron makes it and it's got the same amount of PEA as a $10 bottle of Techron you can get at Walmart.
00:01 DaemonFC; The dealership wants $30 over the counter at the parts dept.
00:01 DaemonFC; It's a good rub if you can get it I guess.
00:01 DaemonFC; GM says not to use any fuel system cleaners, but then their subsidiary, Delco, has a fuel cleaner.
00:01 DaemonFC; And all it is, it Techron.
00:02 DaemonFC; Techron is okay for like, the infamous GM gas gauge that stops working because of sulfur deposits, or maybe some slightly dirty injectors that aren't spraying quite right.
00:02 DaemonFC; But it's not going to do a serious amount of cleanup to anything else.
00:03 DaemonFC; I had to give up and have them carbon clean the Buick. Little old lady poking around 20 miles on the car a week since 2008. :P
00:03 DaemonFC; I got the throttle body cleaned out pretty good myself before I sent it to the shop.

00:04 TR Bot; SCP-0110-J - SCP Foundation
00:04 DaemonFC; Part of it is hooking up some cleaner directly to the fuel rail and running the car on that, but then they do the spray in stuff in the throttle body and I didn't want it to break anything off I could get myself and send it flying into the air intake.
00:05 DaemonFC; You should always clean out the throttle body manually as well as you can before you start doing anything involving like, clipping some intake cleaner into the duct and running it with someone pressing the gas pedal.
00:06 DaemonFC; Your goal isn't to send a mess of varnish that's not already deep inside the intake further down.

02:43 DaemonFC; The "guts" of the Moccamaster seem to hold up better, and it is much more consistent than the machines they sell at Walmart that you have to toss every couple years (the entire machine).
02:44 DaemonFC; With Mr. Coffee having gone downhill so much (they made much better coffee machines in the 70s, 80s, and 90s!) I gave up. Ever since "Jarden Consumer Products" took over and started making them in China, they're garbaaaaaaage.
02:45 DaemonFC; No two units, even of identical model, seem to be calibrated the same.
02:45 DaemonFC; The element usually burns out or starts slowly failing around the 1-2 year mark.
02:45 DaemonFC; And don't even get me going on the brew basket design.
02:46 DaemonFC; They use lousy springs and gaskets in it, and instead of getting nice piping hot coffee in the carafe (which is the only job the machine even has!) you get a lukewarm tepid mess all over your countertop, which drips all over the floor.

02:49 DaemonFC; If you just baby the coffee maker you won't need to replace parts like crazy then by the time you do need a part (most of them are easily replaceable with an allen wrench or a screwdriver) you just pay the $20 or $80 (depending on if it's a wand, a lid, a brew basket, an entire carafe, etc.) and the machine will probably give you many more years before something else goes.

02:50 DaemonFC; And when you're replacing a $70-75 coffee maker every two years, then after just 4-5 years of this you may as well have bought one Moccamaster that stays working.
02:50 DaemonFC; Between the money, the time to go and buy the thing all over again, enduring tepid coffee for months until you bother to actually replace it.
02:51 DaemonFC; They don't even bother to sell replacement parts for Mr. Coffee anymore. It's junk. They know it's junk. By the time you shatter the carafe or the brew basket breaks, statistically the entire unit is dead already anyway.
02:52 DaemonFC; So you can't get parts or if you can they make them so expensive that you're not going to bother asking them to ship you one.
02:52 DaemonFC; So another entire coffee maker goes into the trash.

07:02 schestowitz; about the same as we
07:02 schestowitz; which type?
07:03 DaemonFC; Gevalia Colombian medium roast. 31.6 ounce cans.
07:03 DaemonFC; This will make ten cans.
07:03 schestowitz; instant or blend?
07:03 DaemonFC; Medium grind for auto drip.
07:03 schestowitz; beans are awfdul because you need epxensive machiens to crush them
07:03 DaemonFC; Would also work fine in the percolator although not ideally.
07:04 DaemonFC; Percolator is ideally a coarse grind when you can't normally find pre-ground.
07:04 DaemonFC; If you use medium grind in the percolator, you want to "adapt" a 8-12 cup basket filter by pushing it down over the stem and filling that with the coffee.
07:04 DaemonFC; Or you end up with a gritty sludge at the bottom of the pot.
07:05 DaemonFC; I don't know if anyone makes percolator filters, but I imagine they'd be more expensive than just punching a hole through a basket filter with the stem.
07:05 DaemonFC; How do you get cheaper than $1.50 for 200 of them? :)
07:06 DaemonFC; I use eyeglass spray with basket style coffee filters as eyeglass wipes.
07:06 DaemonFC; schestowitz, I like to stock up on car filters and oil. You go through them all the time but there's not always a good sale.
07:07 DaemonFC; So when there is, get enough for your next couple changes and they never get you for the full cost.
07:08 schestowitz; DaemonFC: we have extensive inventory of food and condiments
07:08 schestowitz; enougggh for many 6+ months in bunker mode
07:08 DaemonFC; Brand loyalty to engine oil is kind of dumb. Go by whichever one meets the specs and is on the best sale price. Filters are less "regulated". The aftermarket is filled with everything from excellent (better than OEM) to outright crap.
07:08 schestowitz; *maybe
07:08 schestowitz; it's hard to calculate thosee things
07:08 DaemonFC; The coffee thing is a constant aggravation.
07:09 DaemonFC; Usually all that gets a rebate is like $1 on 12 ounce bags, limit 5 bags.
07:10 DaemonFC; So I'm taking this opportunity to buy $165 worth at once and then hit it with the rebates and the grocery discount I only get for a few more weeks and the credit card points for online order.
07:10 DaemonFC; That ends up taking it from $16.50 a can to $10.50
07:10 DaemonFC; So like $60 off ten cans.
07:10 DaemonFC; Then I don't need coffee for over a year.
07:11 DaemonFC; Some people pay $6 a CUP of coffee.
07:11 DaemonFC; We call those people retards.
07:11 DaemonFC; I'm pissed when I get to the store and it's $16 per 2 pound can.
07:12 DaemonFC; I remember when they made 3 pound cans and you bought them for less than $5.
07:12 DaemonFC; Remember that?
07:12 DaemonFC; And that wasn't "on sale" or "with a coupon".
07:12 DaemonFC; If you got a coupon in the paper it was like 25-50 cents off.
07:12 DaemonFC; "Hey, cool!" Slip it in the wallet. That's the coffee for the next couple of months.
07:13 DaemonFC; Look, you get $3.50 coupons now because that's a 50 cent coupon in 1994.

07:14 DaemonFC; You have to go back to the Depression and World War II to find something worse than this.
07:15 DaemonFC; You know. Literally EVERYONE out of work at once. Even if you had money there were ration coupons for gas, car tires, a pair of jeans, a bag of sugar.

07:22 DaemonFC; You can switch to 10w30 in this car during the warmer months.
07:22 DaemonFC; But it makes stockpiling oil difficult because you'd have to plan for summer and winter oil changes.
07:22 DaemonFC; There's some benefit if it's warmer out in using 10w30.
07:23 DaemonFC; Cold flow is less of a concern at this point. It sheers down less.

07:44 DaemonFC; It's not up to the rockers and it's not foaming.
07:45 DaemonFC; My guess is some engineer at GM decided that people were idiots and were going to pour five quarts in so just make the dipstick "full" at 4.55 quarts so that when they go ahead and use an entire jug the car is fine.

08:00 DaemonFC; It's hard to find any oil that doesn't have a good detergent anymore except maybe next to the black market Viagra in some shady gas station in the middle of the night.
08:01 DaemonFC; Dollar General was selling Non-Detergent oil and got sued because it really fucked up some people's cars.
08:01 DaemonFC; Who buys motor oil at Dollar General, that cheaply, and figures it will work out?
08:02 DaemonFC; There's a good deal, like Quaker State Full Synthetic for $16 a jug at Walmart, and it's got dexos on the label so it can't be bad.....
08:02 DaemonFC; And some cheap dollar store thing that they got from god knows where, doesn't even have a brand on it.
08:02 DaemonFC; What kind of retard pours shit from dollar stores in their car?

08:07 DaemonFC; I've seen the motor oil they were talking about. It looked super sketchy.

08:07 DaemonFC; There's no dexos logo.
08:08 DaemonFC; There's no Ford WSS specification, no Chrysler spec, no manufacturer specs at all.
08:08 DaemonFC; No API donut, no SAE logo anywhere. No Service Category...
08:09 DaemonFC; Just like, "Dollar General Motor Oil 5-30" in a black and yellow bottle.
08:09 DaemonFC; You can't even stop by Dollar General and get everything you need for the oil change, because they don't sell oil filters.
08:10 DaemonFC; So you know why this is here. Someone is tossing quarts in the trunk because they've got an oil leaker or something and they want to level it off with the cheapest thing they could find.
08:10 DaemonFC; So how this ever ended up in an engine where anyone would notice some damage is.....anyone's guess.
08:12 DaemonFC; The PQIA has a "warning list" where they send things like this off to the lab and they warn you it has no detergents or a bunch of silicon contamination, or both, or that it doesn't actually meet the viscosity rating on the bottle (usually not even close). 08:20 DaemonFC; There's a number of ways oil can "wear out". It can have the additive package depleted to where it can no longer neutralize acids, it can be heavily contaminated with dirt and wear metals from the engine, it can be exposed to higher temperatures than it's made to operate, or high temperatures for too long in total, and it can shear down and lose its viscosity rating.
08:20 TR News; "Can't load the video on this Invidious instance. YouTube is currently trying to block Invidious instances. Click here for more info about the issue."
08:20 DaemonFC; In reality there's always all of these things gradually occurring which is why you have to change it out every 12 months at a minimum no matter how or how much you drive.
08:21 DaemonFC; It's getting really hard to find a conventional motor oil so I've given up.
08:21 DaemonFC; The only place that even still carries conventional oil are the auto parts stores and by the time you drive down there and pay their outrageous markup, you might as well get jugs of synthetic oil at Walmart.
08:22 DaemonFC; Some shops still get bulk conventional so they can run cheap oil change specials on people's older cars.
08:22 DaemonFC; But realize that they're buying this stuff hundreds of gallons at a time from a supplier, every week, so there's still refineries that make it.
08:23 DaemonFC; Europe and the US have had completely different attitudes about oil changes. Europeans are used to expensive as fuck oil changes and then running the car 25,000 miles.
08:24 DaemonFC; Americans just want cheap oil changes and don't mind doing them more often as a result.
08:24 DaemonFC; Probably the American approach is actually better for the car.
08:24 DaemonFC; I don't care how well they refine oil for the Europe market or how much detergent and anti-wear additive they use or what kind of filter they have.
08:26 DaemonFC; You can't make an engine that doesn't have some blowby and produces no wear metals that eventually clog the filter and saturate the oil, and you can't filter out all the dirt from the environment that's getting sucked in, or the moisture intrusion or the seepage of other fluids and gasoline that end up in the oil.
08:26 DaemonFC; So longevity isn't their goal. Some politician just figures you put this in and you don't change it often and who cares about the car because you use less motor oil in theory.
08:26 DaemonFC; MinceR, ^
08:27 DaemonFC; So maybe making oil that's not quite up to those standards but is still pretty good and just purging it all much more often wins, because how do German "engineers" account for all of the incidental factors, including fuel dilution?
08:28 DaemonFC; It's better to just treat the oil as "Once I put this in the car, the clock ticks."
08:28 DaemonFC; But in some other ways, European products do impress me.
08:29 DaemonFC; They make a fine coffee maker.
08:29 DaemonFC; Engineering via Politician never works.
08:29 DaemonFC; That's why EVs are doomed.
08:30 DaemonFC; schestowitz, And you can call me crazy for having them tear down my engine and do a partial rebuild on it, but....
08:30 DaemonFC; At least it's not one of these new shitshows.
08:30 DaemonFC; You buy one of these things and make all those payments and the Buick will probably at least run long after that new one is towed off.
08:31 DaemonFC; It's just junk.
08:31 DaemonFC; Part of the dexos oil standard is timing chain wear. Nobody worried much about that until dexos. Why?
08:31 DaemonFC; GM made timing chains that typically didn't break. Now they have millions of "High Feature" and "High Value" V6s out there that have bad timing chains, so they specified "timing chain wear test" on dexos oil.
08:32 DaemonFC; :)
08:32 DaemonFC; When your engineers fucked up so bad you need to recall the cars, but.....you could also make a new oil standard.
08:32 DaemonFC; :)
08:33 DaemonFC; Part of dexos is "turbocharger-induced low speed pre-ignition avoidance".
08:33 DaemonFC; Can cause engine damage.
08:33 DaemonFC; I don't have a turbo.
08:34 DaemonFC; To avoid LSPI, they're reformulating to put less calcium and more molybdenum and magnesium in.
08:34 DaemonFC; That makes the mixture more expensive (by pennies, but it does).
08:35 DaemonFC; Quaker State Full Synthetic High Mileage is dexos, but it's still on the heavier side of the allowable amount of calcium, obviously to keep their costs down.
08:35 DaemonFC; Fine with me.
08:36 DaemonFC; You could put 50% more calcium than it has in there and I'd be laughing. You put something like that in a turbo engine it'll eventually destroy the pistons.
08:36 DaemonFC; Parts of the standard address additive compatibility with emissions control devices I don't have.
08:37 DaemonFC; Like catalytic converters that have to deal with hybrid cars.
08:37 DaemonFC; BTW, having a hybrid signals to a catalytic converter thief they'll get 15 times more money if they saw yours off.

09:07 DaemonFC; If they get you used to high quality and then they can't get that particular bean anymore, their business suffers.
09:08 DaemonFC; If they just make all coffee taste the same, they can get it from anywhere and shove it on you.
09:08 DaemonFC; Then they decorate the store with "Communist-revival" architecture with some coffee equipment in it.

11:06 schestowitz; "
11:06 schestowitz; YouTube has started to periodically block the public Invidious instances since the start of June 2023 (iv-org/invidious/issues/3872) and they have become more aggressive about it since the start of August 2023 (iv-org/invidious/issues/4045).
11:06 schestowitz; Due to this block, "local proxy" and DASH do not work anymore. But Invidious still works for most videos without using the proxy, because the video playback traffic is sent directly to YouTube servers without going through the instance.
11:06 schestowitz; Thanks to IPv6 you can easily escape this block because there are many IP addresses in a single /64 IPv6 range. (18,446,744,073,709,551,616 IP addresses to be precise)
11:06 schestowitz; This tutorial will explain how to automatically and periodically rotate your IPv6 address. Also some notes about how to have IPv6 in case your provider does not offer it."

22:52 DaemonFC; Then I'm paying a dealership to flush it with Blue Devil, which is a citric acid solution for radiators.
22:52 DaemonFC; It unclogged the system enough that my heater worked again and I had bright bright orange coolant. So clean that it looked like orange soda in a bottle and I figured, all is good, finally.
22:53 DaemonFC; A year later, my engine developed a hot spot and started pinging.
22:53 DaemonFC; So I had them take off the intakes figuring it was carbon and varnish I couldn't get to. There was some in there and they cleaned it, but it revealed a bigger problem.
22:54 DaemonFC; The original dex-cool found a gap, or maybe it made a gap in the RTV sealant GM used on the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets.
22:54 DaemonFC; It mixed with outside air and turned into a "cement-like" substance where the RTV sealant used to go.
22:55 DaemonFC; Then it started sticking to itself and clumping together and hardening into a "mass".
22:55 DaemonFC; A mass of dirt, RTV sealant, rust, and dex-cool sludge.
22:55 DaemonFC; Until there was no way for any coolant to get through the engine on the passenger side and it more or less stopped flowing.
22:55 DaemonFC; So they drilled through that and soaked the passage in CLR.

22:58 DaemonFC; Nothing nasty has come back up out of the radiator hose.
22:58 DaemonFC; One problem I found and fixed (easy) was the original radiator cap's valve had rusted open and been spackled with some of the dex-shit.

23:12 DaemonFC; The 4t65-E is pretty reliable if you change the fluid out sometimes. Whenever it does start slipping, people tend to have good luck replacing a quart of the ATF with Lucas Transmission Fix.
23:12 DaemonFC; It doesn't really fix it. But it's a $12 bottle of stuff that's really viscous, and it thickens the transmission fluid and it can get the car shifting okay again and clear the code for a few years.

23:22 DaemonFC; The first DoD system was in the early 80s and it didn't switch on or off properly so you'd go to accelerate and it took the car forever to turn the engine back into a V8.
23:22 DaemonFC; So they recalled it and the dealer installed a defeat device that ran all 8 cylinders all the time and your car guzzled gas again, but at least it worked right.
