New Releases

• Dubbed by Canonical as the “Kinetic Kudu”, Ubuntu 22.10 was released on October 20th, 2022, and it’s an interim release supported with software and security updates for only nine (9) months.

• Usually Canonical gives users a bit more time to upgrade their installations, but they already slated the end-of-life for Ubuntu 22.10 on July 20th, 2023, a little over a month from the moment of writing this article.

• It looks we’re getting super close to a Linux Mint 21.2 beta release. Development on the follow-up to last year’s Linux Mint 21.1 release was recently wound down, and a new version of the Cinnamon desktop tagged for release on GitHub. These moves indicated a beta release is approaching — and that’s now been confirmed on the Linux Mint community hub.

• OpenStack, the open-source infrastructure-as-a-service project that helps enterprises manage their on-premise data centers, was never known to be easy to install and operate. That meant that very few enterprises set up their own OpenStack deployments, working with third-party vendors and consultants instead, and that small-scale deployments weren’t really viable. With Sunbeam, Canonical (the company behind the Ubuntu Linux distribution) now promises to make it significantly easier to install OpenStack in small-scale environments, thanks to its Kubernetes-native architecture.

On 26 February 2019, Optis filed an action against Apple in the English Patents Court for infringement of the GB designations of eight European Patents.

• Previously, the Higher Regional Court Karlsruhe had issued verdicts in two separate infringement actions filed by Ranpak over EP 07 76 760 B2, which expired in July 2015.

• On June 9, 2023, Unified Patents filed an ex parte reexamination proceeding against U.S. Patent 9,282,090, owned and asserted by Street Spirit IP LLC, an NPE and entity of Dynamic IP Deals. The ’090 patent generally relates to identity verification in a social network using ratings. The ’090 patent is currently being asserted against Meta Platforms, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

The ’474 patent is directed to access control systems for door locks via an application on a portable device.

• A Hong Kong national security judge has received a “serious reprimand” from the city’s chief justice of the Court of Final Appeal after a trademark dispute case he handled was ordered for retrial over plagiarism.

• The CRTC’s deadline for the first two Bill C-11 consultations passed yesterday after the Commission rejected extension requests from a wide range of groups. Given the limited time – there was just a single workday from when the CRTC issued its rejection until the deadline – I submitted brief comments (2023-139, 2023-140) focusing on two concerns. First, the very short timeline for submissions did not allow for completion of research into the questions posed by the CRTC, including the appropriate threshold for regulation of Internet streaming services. I argued that the approach may have excluded many interested stakeholders from fully participating in the consultation. Second, I took issue with the CRTC’s framing of the consultation, which it said was “industry focused”, a signal that the consumer related issues raised by regulatory thresholds (including consumer choice and service costs) were viewed as irrelevant by the Commission.
