New Releases

• Debian 12 Bookworm was released today so I thought it a good idea to make available some up to date beta2 iso files. We have had great feedback from our alpha1 and beta2 64 bit runit release. Many thanks to all who participated in testing.

Debian Family

• Debian v12 with codename bookworm was released as new stable release on 10th of June 2023. Similar to what we had with #newinbullseye and previous releases, now it’s time for #newinbookworm!

• I was the driving force at several of my customers to be well prepared for bookworm. As usual with major upgrades, there are some things to be aware of, and hereby I’m starting my public notes on bookworm that might be worth also for other folks. My focus is primarily on server systems and looking at things from a sysadmin perspective.

• After Debian 12 aka bookworm was released yesterday, I’ve also created new FAI ISO images using Debian 12.

• With yesterdays release of Debian 12 Bookworm, I am happy to know the\ application firewall OpenSnitch is available for a wider audience. I have been running it for a few weeks now, and have been surprised about some of the programs connecting to the Internet. Some programs are obviously calling out from my machine, like the NTP network based clock adjusting system and Tor to reach other Tor clients, but others were more dubious. For example, the KDE Window manager try to look up the host name in DNS, for no apparent reason, but if this lookup is blocked the KDE desktop get periodically stuck when I use it. Another surprise was how much Firefox call home directly to mozilla.com, mozilla.net and googleapis.com, to mention a few, when I visit other web pages. This direct connection happen even if I told Firefox to always use a proxy, and the proxy setting is ignored for this traffic. Other surprising connections come from audacity and dirmngr (I do not use Gnome). It took some trial and error to get a good default set of permissions. Without it, I would get popups asking for permissions at any time, also the most inconvenient ones where I am in the middle of a time sensitive gaming session.

• Debian 12 landed over the weekend. It comes with lots of updated software packages and desktop environments plus support for many architectures. For the first time, it ships with non-free firmware.

Devices/Embedded

• Nathan Ferguson and Alexander Calvert have created a quadruped robot from scratch called the Dingo that uses the Raspberry Pi.

• The team at Soldered Electronics has been designing Inkplate ESP32-based e-paper displays ever since the first 6-inch model was launched in 2019. The latest Inkplate 5 comes with a recycled 5.2-inch E-Ink (e-paper) display with refresh times of only 0.19 seconds, and programmable with the Arduino IDE or MicroPython firmware. The WiFi-connected display offers a 960×540 resolution, or 213 DPI pixel density, integrates an RTC with battery for accurate timekeeping, two buttons for power and wake/user, and I/O expansion via headers and an easyC/Qwicc connector.

Free, Libre, and Open Source Software

Programming/Development

• The second release of the sanitizers package is now on CRAN. sanitizers provides ‘true positives’ for programming errors detected by Address Sanitizers and friends. This permits validation of the setup when chasing such bug reports: it allows us to ascertain that the compiler (and instrumented R version) are correctly set up and the errors we expect to be reported are in fact reported.

• This is my week 2 report for my SoC 2023 project “Modern C porting of Gentoo packages” at Gentoo Linux.

• – I’ve stuck to my proposal and mainly worked on the “Wincompatible-function-pointer-types” bugs. Honestly, nothing much interesting did happen. – I was not able to work for 2 days, due to some personal health issues, I plan on making up for them in the following weeks/days. – MUSL testing environment (chroot) is set up and bugs are being tested against it. There are some bugs that still need improvements/fixes on musl – Got more of my bugs reviewed by my mentor/s, while I do need to work on those updates.

Python

• The “+=” operator, “join()” method, “f-String” method, “string.format()” method, and “Concatenation Operator +” are used to append one string to another.

• When a new value is assigned to an index that does not exist in the list, Python raises the “list assignment index out of range” error.

• A “Raw String” provides a convenient way to work with strings containing special characters in Python. It is created by prefixing the string literals with “r”.

• In Python, to display the distribution of quantitative data across different levels of one or multiple categorical variables, “seaborn.violin()” method is used.

• Python “2.x” used the symbol “u” before the string notation in order to handle Unicode strings, but Python “3.x” uses Unicode by default.

Rust

• Before the GSoC coding period started, I started implementing the diagram used to display DBus activity with the help of the template repository made by my mentor, Maximiliano. One of the first challenges is figuring out how to load the PCAP files, which is the format Bustle uses to store the DBus messages. Without implementing that first, it would be difficult to test how the diagram will look like.

• The Rust pcap library was used to load the packets from the PCAP file, which contains the bytes of a DBus Message. It is nice to use, though it is missing an async API for loading files. That could be fixed in the future, but this week mainly focused on a basic diagram implementation. The bytes can then be parsed through GDBus into a GDbusMessage, which contains the information to implement the diagram.

• Through the parsed message, the diagram can be implemented. It uses ListView to display the rows as, aside from having a nice separation of view and model, it is more efficient because it recycles widgets, especially since PCAP files could possibly contain thousands of messages. Each row contains the elapsed time, path, destination, interface, and member of the message.

• I don’t usually post individual release notes here on the gemlog but this one should have some director’s commentary.

• Version 1.16.4 is a desktop-focused patch that addresses several issues with window and UI behavior. When you have a custom GUI toolkit that aims to target a wide range of desktop and mobile operating systems, it is sometimes a little difficult to keep everything straight especially when the underlying library (SDL) is not uniformly up-to-date everywhere.

• This was one of those releases where you keep finding little problems every time you make a candidate build. Did I catch them all? Perhaps!
