• This has been a terrific week with lots of goodies, especially for fans of the KDE Plasma desktop environment. Apart from all the KDE goodies that landed this week, we also got a new Firefox release, a new major Mesa graphics stack release for gaming, and several new distro and software releases.

• On top of that, I tell you about some of the upcoming features of Firefox 114 and QEMU 8.1, and invite you to try out Ubuntu on a new RISC-V board. • How can Pod start-up be accelerated on nodes in large clusters? This is a common issue that cluster administrators may face.

• This blog post focuses on methods to speed up pod start-up from the kubelet side. It does not involve the creation time of pods by controller-manager through kube-apiserver, nor does it include scheduling time for pods or webhooks executed on it.

• We have mentioned some important factors here to consider from the kubelet’s perspective, but this is not an exhaustive list. As Kubernetes v1.27 is released, this blog highlights significant changes in v1.27 that aid in speeding up pod start-up.

• Pulling images always takes some time and what’s worse is that image pulls are done serially by default. In other words, kubelet will send only one image pull request to the image service at a time. Other image pull requests have to wait until the one being processed is complete.

• Our Machine Learning in Linux series focuses on apps that make it easy to experiment with machine learning.

• Imaginer is GTK4 software which lets you generate pictures using AI. You supply a text prompt, consisting of a collection of words to describe an image, and an AI model creates an image based on the words. Imaginer uses Stable Diffusion and other deep learning, text-to-image models to generate the images.

• An extremely interesting area of research relates to these deep learning text-to-image models. We’ve published reviews of software that uses Stable Diffusion. Our reviews of Easy Diffusion, Stable Diffusion web UI, and InvokeAI noted each software program requires downloading large models. The software performs best when using a machine with a good dedicated graphics card. That’s not the case with Imaginer.

• Firewalls are made to protect the network from any threat by filtering both the in and outbound traffic and ensuring network security as well.

• New features in KeePassXC 2.7.5 include a new “Allow Screen Capture” option in the View menu to enable the ability to capture screenshots for a temporary period of time, as well as support for the latest Botan 3 C++ cryptography library.
