Adopting a pet in Ctrl-C Club
Today, the user ~gome made a post within iris announcing a new game for ^C in which one can adopt a virtual pet and feed it. It works pretty well! Apparently, there is social interaction in the form of pets visiting other players, but I have not seen that yet since the game's server has only been up for about a day.
...to be honest, I thought it was an April Fools' joke at first since it is April 1st in many time zones right now, and I am rather cautious around this time of year. Sorry about that!
Don't worry, though, because it is an honest effort. I did skim through the source code, and I was very surprised to see that it was written in Zig, which is a rather young programming language. How intriguing! I have heard of the language, although I have not used it. There are so many programming languages and not enough time to learn them all. Zig seems pretty cool, though.
To be honest, I do want to make a game that tilde servers can play as well, but I just do not have the time to do so. It would be a text-based MMORPG that is somewhat like a MUD, but instead of rooms, people can group together and go on journeys which consists of fighting waves of monsters. There would be no explicit room traversal; it would just be like "wave 1" then "wave 2" and then the boss. Creating such a game would be fun, and since I have never made a client-server game before, it would help improve my programming skills. There are other unfinished projects I have locally that I need to finish first, though.
Maybe one day...
Anyway, I have a blue fish named Estelle now. I like taking names from video games, so bonus points if you can guess the game I played that I took the name from. There's actually multiple correct answers!
...and please be careful not to get fooled by the myriad of fake nonsense that will appear within the next 24 hours or so, especially since AI is a thing.
Now if you excuse me, I need to play with my pet and also water my plant in botany...
