Stay Small, Small Internet

Lots of people are bailing on mainstream social media sites for various reasons.Recent exodi include those from big players Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.

The Intercept: Leaked Meta Hate Speech Rules

And people have to bail to somewhere. Bluesky is getting a lot of new customers, and those folks are arguably better off for having made the change.

Personally, I'm not on Bluesky. I have vestigial accounts on the other sites, but I don't use them. I'm on Mastodon and Lemmy (and Usenet!), though! I'm a big fan of decentralized social media supported by volunteers. It avoids a bunch of problems with MAKING MONEY that are so important elsewhere.

While there are millions of us here (and we create more content than I could ever hope to consume) the group that is here tends to be smaller and nicer than elsewhere. I follow a bunch of tags on Mastodon and I have to mute or block someone maybe once a week. Barely anyone spams there because it's not worth the time when you can make 100x or more on the big sites.

So I'm happy people are flooding over to Bluesky and not so much to Mastodon.

It's like an overflow area that helps keep the Small Internet under the radar

where it belongs.

As for me, I'll catch you later; I'm off to surf Neocities.
