One of the reasons I standardized on the same top matter[1] for my documents is because I like to keep track of things about each chapter:

1: ../top-matter/

Who is in each chapter
Who is talked about in each chapter
Where is each chapter
When is the chapter and how long it is
What is the purpose of the chapter
The outline of the chapter
The editing status of the chapter

One could also use the top matter to track the point of view of each chapter, though I write single POV stories, or the scene/sequel if you follow Dwight V Swain's[2]'s ideas.

I use this information from the source file[3] to populate the links at the bottom of the online page[4], the timeline for the individual characters (currently missing from my website), and a whole other slew of information.

While writing, I can also use the tools to query information about the chapters.
