The UK Online Safety Act is a great reason to get Scottish Independence but nobody is talking about it.
For those somehow not in the know, digital platforms such as Steam and Itch.io have begun delisting their NSFW games because of pressure by Payment Processor companies, and the UK Online Safety Act.
The latter is of course the focus here, as it's a clear violation of privacy and online safety, which is ironic given the stated goal of the act.
This overreacing by the UK government is, in my opinion, a very good reason to work towards becoming our own independent country and get away from their rule.
For starters, the Scottish government, despite their faults, are still much more progressive and much less authoritarian than the UK government, and even if in a scenario where an independent Scotland tries to do something similar, they won't have nearly as much influence by companies to comply, being much smaller. People would just use a VPN and call it a day. Imagine if Ireland tried something like this. Wouldn't really work, would it?
Yet... nobody is beinging this up, not even the political parties that are pushing for independence, and it frustrates me.
The UK government and even the core system it runs on has shown us time and time and time again that it doesn't listen to its people, and that smaller "countries" in the UK don't make a difference as to who becomes in power in the first place. At best we can force them to form a coalition with a slightly less shit party, but that's about it.
I spoke about this on a Discord server I frequent, and they were trying to bring up the argument of "Well we need to work together and nobody in the UK wants this!".
"Working together" has been a Unionist argument for decades, but it never flies because one country is far bigger than the others and if there are more people in said country who are for the bad thing than there are people as a whole in Scotland or Wales, then too fucking bad, we're getting the bad thing.
People claim nobody wants the Tories or Labour or Reform, yet here we are.
I think this is a very good talking point for those pushing for independence, and it annoys the fuck out of me that nobody in that camp has spoken up about it yet. I think we have a very good oppurtunity to present the idea of leaving these tyrants, but they're letting it slip!
